What Have They Done for Her Lately

I realize that most of the blog space I have dedicated to the Baptist Ministers Alliance of Indianapolis (BMA) has not been flattering.  I freely admit to being skeptical of an organization that says it’s been around for more than 140 years when it filed as a not-for-profit with the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office in March of this year.  I also take some issue with a group that calls itself the official voice of the black community, when none of the black people I know in this town ever remember taking a vote.  And I while I understand using a tragedy to play politics, it would be nice if you’re going to posture, put your money where your mouth is.

I say this because I recently sat down and spoke with Shantay Chandler, the mother of Brandon Johnson, the 15-year old who accused IMPD of excessive force earlier this year.  The officer accused of the beating, Jerry Piland has been recommended for dismissal.  Since the incident which occurred this past spring the BMA has led marches, called for Public Safety Director Frank Straub to be fired and spent $20,000 to bring Al Sharpton to town.  They have made a lot of noise.  And frankly, that is all they have done for Ms. Chandler.

She’s been unemployed for months while trying to take care of her son and the family has had financial struggles.  She even lost her car.   I asked her if she’s gotten any help from the BMA and her answer was a stark “no.”  The BMA hasn’t assisted the family with any money or other types of support.  So while the preachers were raising 20-grand for Al Sharpton’s visit, Chandler was and is struggling to find $1700 to pay for her son’s dental work.  And here’s an interesting sidebar, when Sharpton came to town, no one called the Chandler family, she found out when a reporter called her.

I asked Ms. Chandler if she had any contact with Stephen Clay, the wannabe black Pope of Indianapolis.  She recalled meeting him once since this entire ordeal, but has had no real contact since then.   You would think that if the BMA was the official voice of the black community, its members could pick up the phone and make sure the family had its basic needs met, like a job and medical care.  So that means either the BMA doesn’t have the juice it purports to have or Brandon Johnson is low hanging fruit.

And to make matters worse, when the images of Brandon Johnson were printed on t-shirts, some of the ministers sold them for $5-$10 each, and the family never saw a dime.   To her credit, Ms. Chandler says she wasn’t expecting help, but it would be nice if the people who allege they are fighting for Brandon to do more than just talk.   If you claim to represent 50,000 church members isn’t there someone in your collective congregations that could help someone land a part-time job.  And it would it really be that hard to raise an average of 4 cents from each of your members to help with some dental work.

Now we can debate excessive force, police policies and procedures, and even parental responsibility. But I don’t think there’s much to debate that if you’re going to take up a cause it probably wouldn’t hurt to go all in.  That is unless you have something else going on and Brandon Johnson is just a cause to further your agenda.  But we all know that wouldn’t be going on, now would it?

You can hear Ms. Chandler in her own words below.  Each segment is about 5 minutes long.  I also spoke with City-County Councilor Jose Evans who has stayed in close contact with the family since the incident in May.

Why make a comment when it has already been written so well by another. Matthew 6:5-8 NIV
5″And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Wow. That’s all I can say. Wow. Of all the pieces you’ve done since you got here, where you’ve scooped the local media like they were marking-time, this interview (or two interviews—?) takes the cake. Absolutely brilliant. And as far as I can tell, no other media person in this town has taken the time. What a shame.

Her answers were illuminating, too. A complete culture war, contained inside a five-minute interview. Fascinating. Her resume is either fabricated or tragic–I can’t tell. Her story, and the Sharpton visit/fiasco fallout, are the stuff of strong news stories.

Now, a little friendly advice–humility. Stand back and let this roll around our minds for awhile. Your voice will only sound shrill if you go over and over this. Others’ voices are more powerful. You ignited the fuse–now stand back and watch it explode.

Another hint: I listened to your show this morning enroute to my downtown office. Your signal cuts in and out, and I may have missed part of it, but: don’t ever turn the show over to Ajabu. He can filibuster the best of them, and he speaks in circles over half the time. He mistakenly thinks that the more words he puts out there, the smarter he sounds. And, on a sore point, he’s the last person in this town who is entitled to righteous indignation–until and unless the surviving father of his son’s murder victims, Mr. Alamenos, says: “well done, Mmoja.” I know we can’t always be responsible for our family members’ antics, but his voice on anything sounding remotely “righteous” is like fingernails on a blackboard to me and many others. He can perhaps speak with Biblical indignation about our fellow man’s plight…Maybe, someday…but not yet.

You’ve had a great day. Enjoy a cigar.

    TA,

Thanks for the compliment. This is one of those blurbs that speaks for itself, so I plan to let it.

  • BM

Great story. Absolutely brilliant way of making your point.

  • Thomas Foolery

This whole story sounds a little like the scene in “A Time To Kill.”

I am wondering if a church or non profit was selling t-shirts and not giving at least some of the proceeds over to the family then are they reporting the income? I believe that the income raised from the tshirt sales have to be taxed as it is unrelated business income for the church or non profit organization that sells it unless the church suddenly got into the tshirt selling business. Another reason to be wary of tax exempt organizations who do business outside of their scope of existence.

ms chandler sounds like the poster child for ’self-abused’ black women of her generation…

her completely dysfunctional notation of the ’strong black woman’…

constrast sharply with the reality of ’smart & strong black women’…

    such as…

    condi rice
    michelle obama
susan rice to name only a few examples…

ms chandler has been tricked-out & wh0red since the age of 14 in the great state of mississippi…

    she & her son(s) are now being tricked-out & wh0red by a group of black pimp-preachers in indianapolis-in

    …priceless!!!

Maybe Lacy Johnson should hire her as his personal assistant or as a law enforcement expert based upon her job experience.

Remember she only wants to work part time.

  • She is Being Used

This gets even more interesting…..and tragic.

Indianapolis Recorder June 18th article on family:

Chandler is a single mother of four children ranging in age from 13-18. They live in a modest home in Warren Township and until last month she had a good-paying job.

A former correctional officer at the Marion County Jail, Chandler, Brandon’s mother, drove around to broadcast stations trying to get somebody to do a story about her son’s run-in with police. Finally, she said, reporter Rick Dawson at WISH-TV (Channel 8) did a story about the altercation. And from there, other media picked it up.

The incident caused Chandler to lose her job as a processor at Stericycle, a medical waste disposal company, because she needed to take time off work to handle events after the beating of her son. She had been on the job for a little over a month but had not completed the 90-day probationary period, so she was let go. Chandler, however, seems to see a silver lining in her circumstances. “It was the ideal job,” she said. “They said I could reapply for the position after 90 days.”

On June 15, the family’s 2006 Chrysler Sebring was repossessed because Chandler could no longer keep up the payments. “They were real nice about it,” she said. “The guy asked me if I needed to get anything out of it before they towed it.

Maybe Frank Anderson could hire her back?

  • Melyssa Donaghy

I think we should try to find her a job. I wrote to our HR director and sent her this story. Thanks for letting us know about this Abdul.

  • LEOSupporter

She still cant admit that everything happening in the city right now is her sons fault eh? Her familys lies are burning this city to the ground.

  • Susan817

Ms. Chandler is a mother of six ranging in age from 13-21. She has been receiving public assistance (food stamps, utility assistance, medicaid, free lunch assistance, and textbook rental) since the age of 13 paid for by whom? Us, the citizens. She has been leaving in her modest home paid for by whom? Us, the citizens thru the Section 8 housing program. She even held her “good paying” prior job (while receiving assistance) and had a convicted felon living in her home within two weeks of this incident. Poor poor Ms. Chandler, while you were busy finding all the holes in our public assistance that you could squeeze yourself thru your poor babies were running a muck breaking laws, running with the pop it off boys gang, and terrorizing your neighborhood. I pity this poor soul because she can only blame herself and the men that fathered these kids for her problems. Why shouldn’t everyone be pitching in to take care of her and her dysfunctional children when we have all these years!

It was also not mentioned however just a few weeks after Brandon assaulted the police, there was a car chase were a carload of fine yound men had shot up a house and the car was chased to Ms. Chandlers neighborhood and the fine fellas found inside were all friends of poor poor Brandon.

Im sure all the other employees at your place of business would be ecstatic to hear you say that…

Honestly…does anyone take Jose (Lets kick Arizona out of the Union) Evans seriously? I can’t.

  • dirtyblues

    questions for ms chandler…

what are the full name(s) of the sperm donor(s) of your six b@$t@rds…?

what are the name(s) of the school(s) that ‘broken-teeth’ brandon & his ‘criminally-minded’ brother attend & what grade have they achieved…?

    …priceless!!!

  • John Howard

I do wonder what Brandon’s father/stepfathers/live-in uncles have done for her.

  • Think Again

Dirtyblues: peddle that crap elsewhere. If we’re going to cast doubt on “sperm donors,” yours can’t be proud.

Some of your posters are amazing, Abdul. Why, some even time-travel, and count children via fiction. In the short span of a little over two hours, from post 9 to post 11, Ms. Chandler’s family increased by two kids.

Abdul’s post was great. It didn’t require bigoted throw-away comments. I have no idea how serious Mr. Chandler is or isn’t. I know this: no kid, delinquent or not, should have to do without proper dental work. Not in this country.

The Chandler case will wind its way through the legal system. In the interim, an injured kid needs dental work. Period. If he were already convicted of a crime, under the DOC’s care, even if the injury were his fault, he’d already have his dental work done. Ponder that awhile, dirtyblues.

  • Think Again

No. Absolutely not. Although someone should jerk a knot in that wacko governor’s tail. But to answer your question, no, Jose is not taken seriously. He’s a nice guy. He’ll be a council one-termer unless he gets a little “slating religion,” and files for another council term.

  • Rico

You’re neither funny nor clever. What would be ‘priceless’ is for you to throw yourself off a building. And if there is a pricetag for that, someone pass the hat!

Someone spent money to bring Al Sharpton INTO town?

  • Melyssa

Perhaps, but because I am not a hiring authority, it is not my decision.

  • Think Again

I don’t understand the Sharpton thing–did he really get MONEY to come here? I mean, beyond airfare, he was paid a fee? Does anyone know the true answer to this? I’m not talking about blog rumor. Did the sponsors ever own up to a fee?

I disagree with his politics and ideology but have always found Jose to be approachable, considerate and friendly. That’s more than I can say for some of the councilors.

As for kicking Arizona out of the union. Can Indiana get kicked out? And if so, does that mean we wouldn’t be at war with people who don’t own tanks or planes and the 15.3% FICA withholding would go away along with 35% top federal income tax rate? Booming economy here we come!! ;-)

LoL funny. It probably was just a reason for local self-importants to raise money so they could hobnob with somebody rich and famous. Bringing in Sharpton or Jesse Jackson for that matter just brings chuckles and eye rolls anymore.

I’d like to see somebody raise money to bring Walter Williams or Thomas Sowell to town.
