School Daze

There may be a lot more to the story being reported by my colleagues over at RTV 6 than meets the eye, regarding an IPS teacher accused of “inappropriately touching a student”

6 News is reporting the John Marshall Community High School Math Teacher has been suspended and is being investigated for reportedly molesting a 7th grade student.  The teacher’s name has not been released yet, because he has not been charged, however IPD and Child Protective Services are both looking into the matter.

Indiana Barrister has the name of the teacher, but will not publish it until he is formally charged.  However, IB has also found out that this apparently is not the first time an incident like this has been reported involving this teacher. Sources within Indianapolis Public Schools tell IB that in August 2007 the same teacher was accused of molesting a student, however those allegations were said to be unfonded.  And the teacher reportedly engaged in similar behavior when he worked at an alternative school for IPS.

There is also reported documentation by administrators to IPS officials warning that the teacher was not to left alone with young men.

If  it turns out this teacher was a sexual predator and IPS officials knew, or at least had some inkling of his reported behavior, then someone needs to be called on the carpet big time, or at the very least, fired.

    >then someone needs to be called on the carpet big time, or at the very least, fired..
    .
    And sued, don’t forget that.

I read about this early in the morning and was skeptical of the allegation. But if what you wrote is even halfway true, then IPS is in far, far worse shape than I thought. I didn’t think that was possible but…damn!!!

  • varangianguard

The lowest “head” possible might roll.
    .
If substantiated, and IPS knew of prior behavior, then the highest HR head should roll.
    .
But, I won’t hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

  • Shorebreak

“There is also reported documentation by administrators to IPS officials warning that the teacher was not to left alone with young men.”
    .
In other words, the IPS Administration conspired to protect a suspected pedophile rather than conspiring to protect the children within their care. Since the Administration can no longer be trusted with children, the next question is
    .
“How many others are being protected?” None? Prove it.

  • Greg P

Where is the school board???? Eugene
White is letting this school system go to hell. Now if he is failing to protect our children from pedophiles, he needs to go. He is already driving us to bankruptcy, nepotism is running wild in the system, money is being spent in areas that it was never intended to be spent……administrative positions are being added daily while teachers are losing their jobs……and the coverups continue and the board continue to be White’s puppets…Kelly Bentley, isn’t it time that you took charge and corrected this situation.

  • Jacob

While I understand the gravitas of the situation (if true), really, who cares?

  • Think Again

The pedophile charge i a little premature, given no formal charges have been filed yet. Still, there are a few oddities here:

    1. Dr. White’s daughter is a teacher there. The staff always felt like their every move is reported back to Eugene–ask the fired principal. Whose light sometimes shined as bright as Eugene’s (a real no-no)

    2. Indiana law requires that any suspected child abuse of any kind, from physical to sexual, must be reported, even if the potential is slight for abuse. Those who suspect child abuse have no choice–in fact, it is a felony to fail to report suspected child abuse. Indiana law also protects the reporting persons, absent malice or purely false reports.

    3. Kelly Bentley can’t take charge of a two-car parade.

They all need to go. All the board members…most particularly those there longer than five years. Dr. Busch has made a second career there, and the system has crumbled all around her.

Jacob, surely you didn’t mean your post the way it sounds. Because it sounds pretty callous.

  • Greg P

Jacob…you might think it a little more serious if your son was being molested by a teacher and the school administration not only didn’t do anything but ignored previous incidents.

  • Jacob

Who cares if a an allegation has been made. Either something happened or it didn’t. I could make allegations all day long, but until the prosecutor determines to file charges, really, who cares?
    .
And if this is true, does it change any of our opinions about White or IPS?

  • Jacob

Why don’t we talk about something useful, like how the budget will impact both public and charter schools? Or, how Indiana could follow other cities’ models and begin to attract and support future teachers, especially those new to the profession (maybe the unemployed) who have something to offer our schools (infrastructure or teaching)?
    .
So IB has some gossip (maybe a dangled name). How is that relevant to the greater conversation? [Certainly, Greg, I understand the seriousness for the boy, teacher, and family if true.)
    .
I recently started looking for bigger picture education jobs (TFA, KIPP, the like), and none, none, are in Indianapolis on a wholescale level. That is a shame. We spend so much time talking about the Colts, CIB, et al, that we neglect any public/private partnerships (Mind Trust withstanding). Where is the leadership? White/IPS are small, very small, pieces in this puzzle – so, again, who cares about this one case?

  • The Real Deal

Anybody who’s kid may have been molested by this teacher. I hope you don’t have kids Jacob, but if you do someone should call CPS.

  • The Real Deal

    Make that “whose”

  • Jacob

Haha, Real Deal, I see you represent the growing faction of the population fascinated with other people’s problems as opposed to collective solutions. You would rather fascinate about a not even alleged molestation than focus on real and tangible problems. … Again, when the authorities make an arrest and a prosecutor presses charges and those charges are found true — via our criminal justice system and process — then we have a story. Now, we have a whole not of nothing except, my guess, grown men’s fascination with child molestation. It is not my children who you should worry about.

  • Think Again

Jacob, your posts are often thought-provoking. The “who cares” was thoughtless. Own it and move on.

“Who cares” in the same post as a potential child molester, is insensitive, at best.

  • pascal

Dr. White has been busy tearing that school down. It was a tough gig to begin with and, by all accounts including this one, the parents and kids there have been cheated by Dr. White whose ego could not leave an improving situatio alone but had to charge in and ruin it. If we leave personalities out of IPS speculations all should agree that its performance has stunk for decades in spite of the turd gilding done by such as Kelly Bentley whose defense of government schools, while well done, is done at the expense of ignoring the track record. In the real world of business and reality a slipshod operation like this would have been declared bankrupt and its functions taken over by competent sorts.

  • Taxpayer 834512

The collective input from an array of parties, demographics, and vocations makes an incredibly compelling case that the only bureaucratic entity rivaling IPS for immunity from reform is our glorious federal government.

  • John Marshall Teacher

I am a fan of Mrs. Bentley. She was the only board member who voted not to hire Dr. White. For the record, if the school district proposed a “buy out” of Dr. White’s contract, it would cost about $800,000.

Outside of a dress code, what has Dr. White done? When Principal White was forced out, our school went on life support. Abdul needs to stop by unannounced at lunch time with a camera. The city would be shocked. We are begging for someone to expose what is going on within IPS.

  • Greg P

If anyone ever gets brave enough to reveal what Eugene White has done to IPS, he will be gone in days. Jacob seems to be missing the picture on this allegation of child molesting at Marshall. If true, the molesting is bad enough but the efforts of Dr. White’s administrators to cover it up or ignore it borders on being criminal…..Jacob, I dont care if the walls are falling in, an allegation of molestation is serious and needs to be thoroughly investigated especially when it is the third student in two different buildings.

  • Think Again

As much as I’m no fan of Gene White’s storm-trooper tactics, I don’t think he’d allow cover-ups of suspected child molesters.

  • Jacob

Greg, I agree with you in #17. Child molestation should be thoroughly investigated irregardless of circumstances. When the allegation is corroborated, direct and immediate actions should be taken to remove the alleged and protect the children and inform the parents. … To be clear, at Think Again’s prodding, my “who care’s” comment certainly could be seen as unacceptable. I agree. I meant in regards to the conversations normally occurring on this blog and not as applied to the child and his/her/their family(ies). I hope the necessary IPS and City investigations take place, and, where necessary, charges are filed.

I actually think you might like telling us, Abdul.
