An Early Birthday Present

Although I don’t turn another year older until Saturday,  I got a really cool present early.  It wasn’t cigars, really good scotch or even a ridiculous amount of iTunes cards.   I got a healthy Dad.

A few days ago my father was at his bank in Chicago and felt dizzy and blacked out.  The tellers got him to the hospital where we found out he blacked because sometime earlier he had suffered a mini-stroke and wasn’t even aware of it.   After doing some tests we found out he had an artery in his neck that was 99% blocked.  The doctor, whose last name was Khan which appealed to the Trekkie in me, told me the surgery was pretty standard, but with my Dad at 73, there is always some risk involved.

He had surgery yesterday, came through like a trooper and is recovering quite nicely.   For all the success we achieve in this world, there’s nothing like good news about your parents.   I also have to give some serious props to the future Mrs.  Shabazz she was a rock during all this and kept her future husband pretty well grounded.  Now I definitely know I am marrying the right person.

So no matter what cool presents I’ll get and awesome party I’ll have, I already got the the best present, my Dad.

Your priorities are correct. Best wishes.

    Good news, indeed.

    Yup…been there and done that!
    .
On another note I hav a friend in Saskatchawan, Canada whose husband had a very similar situation. He had to get in the queue to see a physician thanks to their universal health care system. Unfortunately a mini stroke didn’t rate as a priority and he passed. She developed cysts on her ovaries and again she had to wait some six months before she could be seen. Thankfully your dad was treated quickly and competently by the best medical system in the world…for now.

I’m sure it will be a special Father’s Day this year. : )

Great news, Abdul – prayers and best wishes to your family.

Good news Abdul! I wanted to thank you for hosting last night’s cocktail event at Euphoria! The appetizers were great, the service was too, and I am definitely going back soon!

Daw-g, this is not the place for preaching about national health care. Altho you are completely wrong.

    Two things:

    1. Thank God for the good news about your dad.

    2. Happy birthday.

TA – wrong about the reason the friend died? Or wrong about best health care?
    .
As for the place to preach, what better than in a forum that celebrates the successful treatment of a serious medical issue? I have a friend in Canada who waited six months for an MRI because his city only had one machine – and that was the nations capital. That machine was used by veterinarians when the MRI techs went home. He was told “get a wheelchair” when he asked what he should do in the meantime.
    .
I also had a relative in Canada’s wealthiest province, Alberta, who was treated in a hospital for pancreatic cancer. His first three days were spent in a corridor lined with other patient beds because there was no budget for new hospitals. He was finally provided a shared room after he began yelling loud enough to be heard in the lobby that he paid nearly %50 of his salary for social benefits and the only thing he gets back is an opportunity to show his ass to the world when he needs to have a shit.
    .
And it’s not just Canada’s health system. I was the only patient in a waiting room in the UK, with lacerations, contusions, a possible concussion, multiple rib fractures and a possible cheekbone fracture. I watched the doctors leave for their evening “tea” 10 minutes after I registered at triage. When I askeds the nurse when I’d be looked at she responded “Sorry luv, bad timing. The doctors should be back within an hour”.
    .
Just last month I was in NY and ran into an old friend who married an Italian and moved to Italy. She’s 40. She was using two canes because she’d injured her achilles tendon in a bicycle fall and was on a waiting list for surgery. She’s already been waiting 4 months.
    .
So when I hear folks knocking the medical system in the US – especially those who use cost and foreign programs as a basis for argument, I’m tempted to respond with a few words from one of our most famous Butler-Tarkington residents: “I had to laugh like hell”.

Hope your old man stays on the mend, Abdul. Happy Birthday.

I’m glad it was not Dr. Khan’s wrath you experienced. What a blessing for your family, and a great B-day gift. Have a good one!

Shorebreak:>wrong about the reason the friend died? Or wrong about best health care?
    .
You know he doesn’t know. I’m against nationalized health care therefore I’m “wrong.”
    .
England will not say it directly but their dabbling with nationalized health care is a failure. The life expectancy of her citizens is actually on the decline.

Best wishes to you and your family Abdul. My father had a stroke last year so I know how disturbing this can be. (He still fights chickens so I figure he’s not that bad off yet.)
