COULD YA CALL FIRST, NEXT TIME?

As you’ve probably heard the city of Indianapolis is in preparations to possibly bid on bringing the Super Bowl here in 2012.  Bob Bedell of the Indianapolis Convention and Visitor’s bureau made the announcement yesterday.

Bedell says the NFL has given the city its specifics and it will go over them with the Ballard administration.

What you may not know is that when Bedell made the announcement he did not clear it with the Mayor-elect’s office first. And jumped the gun before calling Ballard.

The Ballard camp says they want what is best for the city and a Super Bowl would be good for it. However, if anybody else wants to make a major announcement in the future, would it really kill you to call the Mayor first before going to the press?

A lot of people would appreciate it.

  • Gimme a Break

It was poor form, to be sure.

But, why are you schilling for the Mayor-eelct? He’s a big boy.

I imagine if he dropped a dime on Bedell, with the following message, it would be well-received:

“Hi, Bob. Saw your announcement. You assumed I’d suport this bid, and you’re right, but this is the last time I want to see that kind of announcement before we talk. Capiche?”

Thanks, Abdul. I wondered why Ballard wasn’t part of this announcement. What a jerk Bedell proves himself to be.

  • Cynical

Or is some outgoing big shot on the CIB using Bedell to try to box in Ballard?

  • amused biatch

In this morning’s Star, Robert Vane says that Ballard completely supports the bid. So the story is true. Should we expect more of these kinds of “sweeping changes” from our shiny new mayor?

abdul: the IBJ reported yesterday that “The ICVA and Mayor-elect Greg Ballard’s transition team talked about bidding for the 2012 Super Bowl for weeks and have decided to move ahead on the plans.”

then the star reported yesterday that “Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association President Bob Bedell said Mayor-elect Greg Ballard’s transition team has given the ICVA the green light to begin the process of bidding for the 2012 game.”

so what exactly are you saying? that bedell lied? that ballard was on-board but wasn’t ready for bedell to announce yet?

It will be business as usual in Indy until the new mayor hammers on someone.

    Peace

The corporate money and effort would be better spent attracting a organization that will commit to have multi year events in our city and perhaps move its headquarters like the NCAA or Bands of America.

How about a soccer governing body that would hold regional, national and international games in the Lucas Oil Stadium in the Colts off season?

  • Shorebreak

    I like your thinking, Greg.

With Indy’s proud history in motorsports, I recommend that the city build on that theme and pursue another popular motorsport event. I’ve been to the 500 and other racing events. Based upon a large percentage of the audience, I think that a annual Monster Truck National Championships might do well at Lucas Oil Stadium.

We could call it “The Toilet Bowl”.

    Any thoughts?

People don’t realize what kind of person Bedell really is. All this stuff he’s pushed ofr here – new convention center, more hotels, etc – that’s exactly what he did in St Louis.

It tanked there. Absolutely tanked. So Bedell moved here…and five years from now we’ll be wondering why the big conventions don’t come to Indy any more.

A Super Bowl brings in, primarily, hotel revenue. That money doesn’t create jobs, other than pillow-mint placers. It does enrich Bedell’s pals in the hotel/convention racket.

Would Indy be any different today if 25 years ago the Mafia had taken over ? Would we have to have built two football stadiums, a mall, a huge convention center, and a new basketball arena ? That’s two billion bucks and I still don’t see any big companies relocating to Indy.

    Jay,
St.Louis is a fine example of a city with misplaced priorities. The result? St.Louis is ranked next to Detroit as the most dangerous city in America.
I’m sorry, but this hospitality industry kick the business leaders in this town are on will never pan. It’s an economic base built on a foundation of sand that will, in the end, fall on it’s face.
The future of Indianapolis cannot be built on one night stands like a Super Bowl. Indianapolis will no better or worse for it.
If all this city has to offer as an economic growth model are hotel rooms and convention space the we are doomed.

Interesting, Indycover is done. Just posted the last post. Very strange, with all the shaking up that is going to happen over there at IMPD. Anyone know anything?

  • anonymouse

Carefull, I saw that too. You know, things just run its course and need to end sometime. It served its purpose and realizes it is time to move on. I have no doubt that if the need arose, Indyundercover would be back in a heart beat.
