So Who Is Responsible?

I’ve seen tax bills increase from 1 percent to more than 200 percent as tax bills have started hitting the doorsteps. But some of you have wanted to know about local governments and their spending. Overall, Marion County spending is up 10 percent or $131 million more of your money. But that’s an average. Here’s a list of the worst offenders when it comes to spending.

Clermont - 162 percent increase.
Decatur Township - 49 percent increase.
Wayne Township - 40 percent increase.
Indianapolis Fire District - 36 percent increase
Franklin Township - 32 percent increase
Indianapolis Public Schools - 21 percent
Marion County - 25 percent

Now here are the governments who are spending the least of your money

Washington Township - 95 percent decrease.
Speedway Public Transit - 30 percent decrease.

Out of the nearly 50 units of local government, 18 are spending less. Only one school district is spending less, Warren Township.

Let me know if you want more info. Sometimes it pays to be a carpetbagger.

    Abdul,

What about in Hamilton County? Can you give us a Carmel breakdown?

This is good info. My reaction since this storm started brewing earlier this year was to use the voting booth to try to displace those chiefly responsible for this mess - both the income and property tax increases.

I realize that’s probably complicated and it probably wouldn’t be easy to generate a list of people to vote against. But that would be great if such a list was compiled here. In other words, I want to use my votes, but am not certain how to use them.

So of this needs more information (rather than the list provided here).

The Washington Twp. decrease is likely due to the fire merger (the cost is reflected in the 36 percent increase for IFD). If dollar values were available, I think that would bear out.

“Marion County” is a rather amorphous entity, and I’m not sure where the increases are .

    Speedway has public transit?

I think we need a complete list of the 50 so we can start the THROW THE BUMS OUT Campaign for 2007. I’m certainly starting to take note of who’s in office in Wayne Township right now.

Russ: Educated guess - Speedway Public Transit is likely a taxing body so the excluded city can contract for service with IPTC - known better as IndyGo. At one time an IndyGo bus that picked up a passenger in Lawrence or Beech Grove paid an extra 50c, and in Johnson County an extra $1.00

I don’t know if that is still the case.

Center Township Trustee Carl Drummer seems to fascinate endlessly so many folks all over central Indiana - whats the increase or decrease percentage on Center Township government?

  7. Max

No one is fascinated with the Center Township Trustee’s wasteful spending.
The taxpayers are paying for 4 buildings instead of one to administer poor relief. The trustee is not suppose to be a real estate developer.

How can I find this information on my own? Where is there a spending report that would show me the numbers?
