The Young Crowd Is Getting A Little Old

When the Marion County Republicans were trying figure out who would be there new chairman, State Senator Mike Young said current Marion County GOP Chairman Tom John would get the job over his dead body. Tom got the job and Mike didn’t keep his promise. Young is symbolic of what is wrong with a portion of the local Republican establishment. Young and his ilk are fighting consolidation like third world dictators who are past their prime, still fighting revolutionaries.

Indiana lawmakers will have a conference committee meeting over Indy Works tomorrow afternoon. And Young will lead the charge to try to stop it. Young is symptomatic of the outdated and anachronistic thinking that still plagues part of the GOP in Indianapolis. By opposing consolidation, instead of embracing and co-opting the issue, the old guard members come across as protectors of the status quo and more concerned about the jobs of township officials than saving the taxpayers money.

Even one of their own experts who testified at the summer study committee on consolidation in 2005 told the panel that fire consolidation saves money and creates efficiencies. Were they not listening, or did they only hear what they wanted to hear?

The members of the GOP who are fighting consolidation need to move on. They are on the losing side of history. This county faces serious problems concerning crime, taxes, finances, foreclosures, schools and economic development. Maybe Young and his group should spend time focusing on those issues. But then again, they do take time, energy and thoughtfulness. And I would never accuse the Young crowd of being thoughtful.

Several years ago I heard that under Mutual Aid Pacts, I.F.D. makes three times as many runs out of its district as it gets back in return. Essentially it seems that the townships were running cheap, small, underfunded dinky fire departments but depended upon the Big City to do the needed fire-fighting for free. Center taxpayers had to pay for a real expensive big fire department to cover for the stinginess out in the townships. That simply is unfair!

    from Tully Political Junkie:

    Daniels endorses consolidation

Gov. Mitch Daniels today urged negotiators on the Marion County consolidation bill, “to produce a conference report that allows Marion County to move forward expeditiously with its consolidation plan.”

Daniels made his comments in a letter sent to members of the House-Senate conference committee. Mayor Bart Peterson has spent the past two years trying to consolidate operations — including police and fire service — in the county.

“Local government in Indiana has too many layers and too many elected officials,” Daniels wrote. “The result is inefficiency and a steadily increasing property tax burden on our fellow citizens.”

A handful of particularly obstinate Indianapolis Republicans have been the main opponents to the mayor’s efforts. It will be interesting to see how members of both parties respond to the decision by Daniels, a Republican, to put policy ahead of politics on this issue.

Abdul, Young’s one of those senators in a badly gerrymandering district (Morgan, Johnson, and Marion counties). They don’t have to do anything but breathe to stay in office.

  • Joe’s Right

Young is a riddle wrapped in stupid.

He denied Peterson a victory for two years in the legislature, principally because he was chair of the county Republican party, and the mayor could not do anything right.

  • joemayberight but you are wrong

Young was not the chair, simply an antiquated throwback politician similar to Pat Bauer.
Consolidation should go thru, but you will always have to work around young
