Plantation Politics

Up until about a week ago, the most hated Black man at Marion County Democratic headquarters was probably yours truly.  That was up until a week ago.  I think that privilege now goes to Indianapolis City-County Council members Vop Osili and Joe Simpson.

As you know both Osili and Simpson decided to show an independent streak and committed the unforgiveable sin of listening to their constituents and voting in favor of expanding the downtown TIF District to Mass Ave and 16 Tech.  It is something a number of business people, church groups and neighborhood organizations wanted.  So they expanded the TIF and at the same time found money for business loans and workforce development.  And instead of getting praise, they are getting grief.

Apparently when the Council Democrats got together at the start of the year, they made a pledge to vote together as a group, regardless of whether a measure was good or bad for their respective districts.  They made a pact to stick together and no one would break from the caucus ranks.  Now that several of them have, life reportedly is not going to be good for Osili or Simpson.  I am told there is a meeting this week between Council President Maggie Lewis, Osili, Simpson, Vern Brown and new chairman of the Metropolitan Economic Development Committee, Leroy Robinson.  Steve Talley stepped down from the post.

I don’t have the full scoop on that meeting yet, but what I do know, there is supposed to be a move to get Osili and Simpson back on the plantation.  I find it fascinating that these guys ran on representing their districts and listening to their constituents, however when they actually do it, they get called on the carpet.

I think what some people are failing to grasp is that a lot of these church groups, business groups and neighborhood organizations are watching the Marion County Democrats and are getting fed up with the game playing and are seriously looking at taking it out on them in the next few election cycles.  And if you don’t think these groups can make a difference in a county where Democrats have a 14,000-vote straight ticket advantage over Republicans, pick up the phone and call Melina Kennedy and ask her how the view from the 25th floor looks.

That’s the nice thing about walking off the political plantation; there are a lot of free people waiting for you on the other side.

“When the Council Democrats got together at the start of the year, they made a pledge to vote together as a group, regardless of whether a measure was good or BAD FOR THEIR RESPECTIVE DISTRICTS. They made a pact to stick together and no one would break from the caucus ranks.”
-Ahhhh, yes, Machine Politics! Everyone for The Machine, never mind what’s good for those who elected them…..
    Sounds familiar.
    “Corruption is as corruption does.”

Yep, regardless of strata, life on the dole ain’t about pineapple.

There are reasonable concerns about the p-dime doping of crony capitalists; an unholy transference of resources from & risk imposed upon, the people, as unsuspecting / uniformed guarantors (disclosure?), vs. SEC grade purchasing by investors. Sure, it wasn’t built in a day, but the fall of Rome exceeded the comprehension of its citizens. Translation: Government doing too much, overwhelms resources & attention of its people- more peril than progress.

That said, downtown is vibrant as ever (entertainment, cuisine, living options, etc.), during a historic period of decline in the national economy.

An unemployment number between 15-21%, is believable if you count, able bodied people of working age. The swamp fever (D.C.) that’s infected many of our cities doesn’t appear to have a grip on Indianapolis- yet. But, is the Carmel canary a healthy bird?

I just wonder what made Osili vote for something he pledged to vote against. Why did he do it in such an underhanded manner. If he truly believed it was a good deal why didnt he state such in his caucus?? Does he have so little respect for President Lewis and Chairman Talley that he has to lie to their faces? I dont hate Vop but I now know that I can never trust him again.

Abdul: Where were you when I needed you- Ah-hem-voting against MY caucus and being punished for it. Reminder-I was right on Straub from the get-go and was the only councillor courageous enough to publicly say so.

No offense, but I don’t recall you reaching out to me. Also, we would have disagreed on Frank. I thought he was good for the city. I have also offered you opportunities on my blog space to make your case on a couple of issues. The offer still stands.

  • Indy4U2C

Disagreed on Frank Straub? Abdul, Straub was by appearance following in the footsteps of the man who was NY Police Commissioner when Frank Straub was Deputy Commissioner! Federal prosecutors had denounced NY Commissioner Bernie Kerik, who rose to the upper echelons of power, as a CORRUPT official who sought to trade his authority for LAVISH BENEFITS.
Do you know if Bernie Kerik had a deluxe shower built into his suite of offices that cost more than most homes in our city like Frank Straub did? -I call that lavish. Oh, on the benefits side, I’d say Frank’s mistress got some BENEFITS, didn’t she? Name as a Department HEAD by Frank Straub…now their love affair has been disclosed. Do you know if she ever tried the LAVISH shower in Frank Straub’s personal office?
-And just why is the Public Safety Budget in the red now that Frank Straub has gone? -Where is the forensic audit?
You know, there is a lot of similarities to compare between Frank Straub and Bernie Kerik.
I say bring in a forensic accountant to audit what happened with OUR TAX money under Frank Straub’s control!

Ramon, how’s that “Hopey-changey thing workin out for ya?”
You can never trust Vop again? -I wouldn’t trust ANY Democrat!

Maggie needs to distance herself from Vernon Brown, he is the Black Plague of the CCC. Vernon won’t be any help to anyone after this term. Vernon can’t run again unless he resigns IFD. Vern has NEVER lifted a finger to help a constituent in his district R or D. Vern is out for Vern. Vern is a lazy ass who can’t slap his own ass with both hands in a dark room. The man is useless.

When did Osili ever pledge to vote against this TIFF.?The only pledge that Im sure he has taken is to serve the best interests of the people of his district and not a select few who see the 25th floor in their future.

  • Indy4U2C

OK, Ernie, I’ll agree that “Vermouth Vern” is the Black Plague…..but remember the other component to that Plague: Monroe Gray!

Not one word of discomfort from you on your blogs when my opponent was sending out lies about me or the votes I had cast during my term as a councillor. Silence when I’ve been stripped of my committee assignments for stating simple truths that are aimed at protecting the public good, not the pride of individuals who have erred and won’t admit it.
You and I have often had private communication about issues and I have often written to you both privately and publicly on my “insider” perspective on issues-so I don’t believe it’s fair to say I haven’t reached out to you. You’re the media man about town trying to dig up all the inside poop for your cheat sheet.
I don’t recall any dismay on your part when I became persona non grata for demanding unheard of things in politics and government like integrity of process, or the everyday citizen having somewhat of a fair shot against those able to pay high priced attorneys, the demand that role models such as mayors keep their promises to citizens and noble heroes like firefighters and police officers. And Frank Straub good for the city? Don’t get me started…
Silence is not always golden. Sometimes it’s considered a sin of omission. I’m just sayin….

Christine, its the way you go about things,,,you attack the people who can help you. Not sure why your going after Abdul here, he just reports the happenings of local government.

Actually it appears Vop Osili’s pledge is to do what is best for the downtown developers.
