The Prodigal Superintendent Returns, Unfortunately

When I heard that Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Eugene White was looking for another job, I didn’t know whether to crack open a bottle of scotch or just crack up.

There was one part of me that wanted to run outside and do cartwheels just cheering the fact that worst Superintendent in the State of Indiana was heading south, which is ironic because that’s where he has been taking IPS ever since he took over.  And then there was another part of me that felt really bad that he was leaving because now some other poor schmucks were going to have to deal with his ability to miseducate their children as well.  Yikes.

Could you just imagine the poor parents and teachers who would have to put up with someone who had threatened to break the law because he doesn’t like charter schools?  Or someone who has been losing a thousand students on average a year and blaming everyone but himself?  Or for that matter someone whose inability to educate children was so horrific that he lost several schools to a state takeover which could have been avoided had he just taken a look in a mirror and did some really tough self-evaluation as opposed to just seeing a guy who could do no wrong?

And you know what the sad part is in all this? I am willing to bet a thousand bucks that the school districts in South Carolina and Alabama knew all this when they made him a finalist for the jobs but that’s not what killed his chances.  What probably killed his chances was Eugene’s inability to keep his mouth shut and when he told one school district in a public meeting that he really didn’t want to work there, but the other school district.  Really?  That’s like telling one woman the only reason you’re with her is because the other won’t take you and she just happens to find out about it.  At the end of the day you end getting nothing, literally.

So I guess at the end of the day, the good news is Eugene won’t have the opportunity to be a total failure in another district and miseducate someone else’s children.  Instead he can just continue to remain at the helm of the sinking ship known as IPS Schools.  Apparently it is a job he does very well because it’s the only one he knows how to do.

  • Think Again

If IPS were a corporation, you could root for it to sink faster so it can be rebuilt.

Sadly, it isn’t a regular corporation.  And while it sinks, tens of thousands of kids get caught in the vise.

    Here’s how this went down:

A school admin search firm, staffed with fired or “retired” former Supers, called Dr. White and said: “Hey, we can see you’re sinking quickly at Indy.  Want to go elsewhere?”

These slimy firms are hired all the time by school districts on the prowl for a new Superintendent.  They make huge money, and just like the crop of Supers they survey, these firms are rife with unrealistic expectations.  Which is a kind way of saying: they don’t know reality.  Why should they? They’ve spent a lifetime making good money and propulgating their Admin-speak with little or no resistance.

Luckily, more than one school bord member in Mobile and Greenville saw through Dr. White’s BS.  We’re more-used to it, so we dont cringe when he enters a room any more.

His unseemly courting of two separate suiters simaltaneously was a poorly-choreographed soap opera.  Badly acted.

But what do you expect when the School Administrator mindset rules the day?  This drama was scripted for a poor ending.

So now–do we wait on the sidelines for a new majority on the IPS board?  One that “gets it” ?

    It’s probably our only option.

    Very well said, Abdul!

The “system” has been failing for decades with Super White just the last person holding the office atop the dung hill. The “system” is socialist organized and run by our 150 person screwal board who is happy to waste ever increasing amounts of money on their failed system.  What rises to the top of socialized systems?  And, from their point of view, isn’t it better to turn said person into a Judas Goat than to own up to their craven failures-the failures that make the IPS super job impossible?  Proof, for those who think they know so much would be for any of the posting fools to demonstrate a name of an IPS super who ever did well, improved test scores in step with IPS costs, for instance.  Find one in Indiana? The Midwest?  The whole stinking US of A?  Not going to happen.
So, Abdul’s post might make him feel good but does nothing at all but perpetuate a myth-a political myth.

Even though IPS has been sinking for a decades, Dr. White has done nothing to reverse or halt any additional decline.  As far as the school board having control, they were unable to prevent Dr. White from promoting his son or prevent Dr. White from making a series of poor decisions.
IPS still needs a quality superintendent, unfortunately there really is a shortage of these.

Congratulations Abdul, this is a good article.  It provokes people to think about the failing system along with the leader that is ultimately responsible.
NOW, you know I have to point out your double standard.  I say this because, I really believe if you did a series of articles using the same evaluation standards for job performance with Frank Straub as you utilize for Eugene White, you would be doing this community a great service.  I know you have the ability to help us.  I just don’t understand what is holding you back.  As with E. White, Frank Straub has been extremely detrimental to Indianapolis.
Abdul, I have been an admirer of you work since the first day I started watching your journalism ability here in Indy.  That is why I am so perplexed at your laissez-faire approach to Frank Straub’s Indy performance.
I’m not telling you how to do your research.  But if I may make a suggestion, just start with the contrast of confidence votes from the City-County-Council, starting with the first vote with only 1“no vote.”  Then show the progression to the second vote’s percentage increase of “no votes” (they then had a track record in which to evaluate him).  And then let’s see the percentage increase of “no votes” this next time?  Imagine the person signing your paycheck giving you a yearly evaluation.  And every year you failed to make improvements and that person gives you “worse marks” than the previous year.  How long would any of us keep our jobs?????
You could then take a look into the Budget Shortfalls.  He fails to budget for practice ammunition and toilet paper???  Wow Abdul, this just seems like a “no-brainer” as I sit here writing this.  Come on, just a few weeks after his doomsday presentation of the budget to the CCC, he now says he will not have a deficit at the end of the year?????  Abdul, just have a hay-day with the budget portion (maybe: less police manpower since the day he came)!
Maybe take a look at the increase in crime?  Not just “part one” crimes.  Also look at the other ones that really matter to the average citizen’s day to day quality of life.  Take a real close look and interview Police Officers on the street to find out how crimes are being “reclassified.”
There are so many aspects possible for your investigation.  I will just give one more that is really the driving reason for Straub’s performance, “the way he communicates his vision.”  No one disputes the need for changes in IMPD.  The rank and file officers told us all that even before the Merger.  They want change, the citizens want change and I really believe Frank Straub wants change.  However, what leadership model for making positive change do you see that you should attack your workforce in the Press, yell at supervisors in front of their subordinates, belittle the objective Merit Board and the list goes on and on.  Let’s assume that every one of his ideas for change is perfect?????  If you lack the leadership to get those ideas into practice, what good are you?
Abdul, I wish you well in your investigations and reporting on Public Officials.  I look forward to your next articles on E. White’s and Frank Straub’s job performance.

While property taxes were replaced as the confiscatory funding scheme for failure in “public education;” look & ask around, 1-2-3 isn’t, escalators are in place & this is where it takes us:  abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/ireland-faces-popular-revolt-property-tax-16045514#.T3nQJXgqPgp

WOW!!!  After writing my above post, I came across this report http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/investigators&id=8596098
This is REALLY SCARY!!!  Frank Straub has brought a lot of New York City ideas to Indy.  Is this one of them?????  We may be in big trouble.  ABDUL, please, you have to help investigate this situation!!!  Eugene White can wait.

  • Ramon

IPS needs a quality school board with members who are more than mere puppets of White.  Mary Busch is the most obedient puppet and needs to go.

  • Think Again

    Pimp Daddy?  Jeez.

    Tacky.

  • M Theory

Wow, TA.  That was beautifully written and easy to read.  I wish you would start a blog.  I would read you every day. And, I have always loved your brand of liberalism.

The Polipit enhanced the WABC report by exposing the rest of Straub’s new CompStat-based plan.

    http://www.thepolipit.com/2012/04/impd-welcomes-compstat.html

It is clear that Straub brought the NY way to Indianapolis.  What is scary is what that means.

In addition to Me’s WABC report, there is the Adrian Schoolcraft expose of what CompStat is doing, and it isn’t good.

Wayne has an ex super-a bit pricey.  Washington had an old guy with some audit problems.  Eugene’s predecessor (s) were  not so hot (with the exception of the Lady).  So, why all the venom for Eugene?  Listen up, in the world of commerce and industry, hardly any Indiana superintendents would be hired and the reason mainly would be lack of ability.  In socialist systems, anything can rise to the top and float there.  What we do in Indiana is hire collective farm managers from Russia to run our agri business…into the ground.

  • RogueRabbit

We need to get real and start stating the truth about public safety. Is money being mishandled? Yes. Are crimes being reclassified to manipulate stats? Yes. Do any street officers respect Straub? No. Why? Because he is a bookworm with no actual on the street crime experience. Does Straub surround himself with flunkies and yes men who are also unqualified? Yes. Why is noone stating these facts? Mayor Ballard, what did Indy ever do to deserve the appointment of this zero? There is a lawsuit pending in New York about how CompStat policing has failed and resulted in widespread departmental corruption. The only reason Straub isn’t personally named in it is he had the miraculous luck of already starring in the sequel to “Escape from New York 2= Watch out Indy, here comes Frank” EVERYONE knows he is bad for our city, why is everyone ignoring the gigantic elephant in the room?

  • Pascal

http://diana-vice.blogspot.com/  How did you ever conclude that Eugene was the worst in Indiana?  Lawyers for Wayne Township and their superintendent will also give you a run for your money.  Franklin township seems to be the locus of superintendent stupidities, serial ones.  The better part of wisdom would be to cast a wider net and note that public enemies are often school superintendents.

  • Reality

If only the public and elected officials actually cared enough to actively investigate and remonstrate.  Morale in IPS is below rock bottom with outright unfair rubrics being played by the how much lipstick is on said teacher’s @$$, outright threats to fire teachers who do not “enforce” dress code, being told that donating PTO time to a sick bank for those with illnesses counts against you in the review, etc.  Continually shuffling failed administrators from takeover schools to the ivy halls of Morton Finney, while cutting classroom resources, continues ad nauseam.  ”Children First” is not the real motto or mission statement of IPS, but rather a play of words.  IPS has become such a nightmare, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the EEOC became involved, if notified.  This is an election year and as such, new voices need to be heard on the school board and incumbents retired.  Would anyone like to hear about the daily violence against teachers?

…OK, someone explain how our Mayor on WIBC today said there is no reason for an audit????

Perhaps someone needs to send the Mayor for a visit to the hospital, like the NYPD CompStat Executive Staff did with Adrian Schoolcraft when he documented what they were doing.
