The Other Money

A lot attention was raised this weekend on how much money was raised by Republican Greg Ballard and Democrat Melina Kennedy in the race for Indianapolis Mayor.   However, there wasn’t much reporting on how much the political parties raised nor individual City-County Councilors.

I decided to spend some time this weekend looking through reports and publish what I found.  It was interesting to see the incumbent Councilor who raised the most money this period was Republican Mike McQuillen of District 12 who reported raising more than $70,000 for the period (including $22,000 to start).  His opponent, Regina Marsh reported raising $13,000.

I am reporting only those candidates who raised more than $10,000 for their races.  The first number is what they raised for the period, including what they started the reporting period with.  The second number is the cash on hand.  An asterisk notes an incumbent.  All numbers are rounded.

  • Kostas Poulakidas – $93,000/ $63,200.
  • Mike McQuillen* – $70,000 / $18,300.
  • Ed Coleman* – $66,000 / $10,700.
  • Ryan Vaughn* – $57,000 / $16,000
  • Zach Adamson – $42,000 / $13,000
  • Angel Rivera* – $30,000 / $6,000
  • Aaron Freeman* – $27,000 / $911.00
  • Christine Scales* – $25,000 / $19,000
  • Jeff Miller – $25,000 / $8,300
  • Marilyn Pfisterer* – $25,000 / $16,000
  • John Barth – $24,000 / $3,100
  • Jack Sandlin* – $24,000 / $7,000
  • Ginnie Cain* – $22,000 / $3,000
  • Vop Osili – $20,000 / $6,200
  • Bob Lutz* – $19,000 / $3,900
  • Leroy Robinson – $18,600 / $2,700
  • Janice McHenry* – $17,000 /$4,000
  • Barb Malone *- $16,000 / $3,800
  • Dane Mahern* – $15,000 / $10,000
  • Susan Blair – $14,000 / $2,500
  • Brian Mahern* – $13,000 / $9,300
  • Regina Marsh – $13,000 / $7,66
  • Maggie Lewis* – $12,000/ $5,500
  • Anthony Simon – $12,000/ $247.00
  • Monroe Gray* – $11,000/ $5,000
  • Susie Day*  - $11,000 / $359.00
  • Mary Moriarty Adams* – $10,000 / $10,000
  • Pam Hickman –  $10,000/ $3,300
  • Len Farber – $10,000 / (-900.00)

Note, Coleman is not running for re-election at-large but against Republican Jack Sandlin.  He also received more than $50,000 from the National Libertarian Party.

Overall, the Marion County Republicans reported raising about $900,000 through their various organizations and having about $190,000 in cash on hand.   Democrats reported raising about $720,000 and having about $180,000 in cash on hand.

  • Think Again

THIS is why you’re a good political reporter.  Thanks.  Did you round-off numbers?  The amounts raised are all nice neat convenient figures.

National Libertarians–what in the HELL were you thinking? Or are you that flush that you can throw away this kind of money?

I think Regina’s figures need another number or a decimal point.  ??

  • Abdul

    The numbers are rounded up.

  • M Theory

That’s a lot of money to raise for jobs that collectively pay just a little over $300k.

Ed Coleman got too cocky and too many women heard his awful sexist and extremely off color remarks made to and about women and their body parts.

I don’t think he’s going to win it, no matter how much money the LP lavishes upon him.

I don’t give to the LP anymore.  I give to the person.

  • guest

What in the world could Ed Coleman have spent 55,300.00 on?

What in the world could Ed Coleman have spent 55,300.00 on?

  • M Theory

Isn’t that Kostas dude in Christine Scales district paid by lots of big out of town lobby money?

Evidently, Kostas Poulakidas is for sale to the highest bidder outside the district.

I know that Christine Scales gives away her council salary to charity every year.  She serves for the genuine love of service. I hate it when political slimeballs roll in with their out of state lobby money and try to oust good local people who truly serve their constituents.

  • Dave

Christine Scales seems to act with the citizens’ interests in mind; beyond & outside the parties, much to their chagrin.

  • Pissed off in Meridian Hills

Pretty obvious that he bellies up to the bar often. Im sure that with that kind of cash you can had a big bar tab

  • Pissed off in Ravenswood

Ed may have stepping in a big pile this time. Scales is a good lady who votes the way she sees it.She is not a Ballard puppet like Angel of Vaughn

  • indyernie

    Vacation?

  • pascal

Let’s suppose we rank these folks in terms of being competent and honest.  Not that it will count for much in either party but just as an exercise.  Who would rank above Scales?

  • Rico

Sexual harrassment insurance. I think he’s hoping Obamacare will lower the premiums.

  • Rico

    Just guessing, of course.

  • Anonymous

I’ve been up and down that list twice.  There are more learned people in the area to ask about the quality of these Councilors, but for me- I don’t see anybody of more quality than Scales.

I’ve talked with her briefly at a hearing on Washington Township schools and at Washington Township board meeting.  We don’t agree on everything, but while a Republican, she is also not marching in lockstep (Thank God) with the county party (she voted against the corrupt 50-year parking deal).

I think she’s straight ahead.  I only wish I could live in her district and not have Ryan Vaughn as my councilor.  Vaughn refused to recuse himself from voting in the 15-14 vote for the parking meters deal.  His  job was (and I believe still is) at Barnes & Thornburg.  Nearly everybody in the parking fiasco was and is represented by them- including the Indianapolis Star supposedly covering the issue!  I believe I’m not the only one that believes that to be a conflict of interest, inexcusable from either party.  I’m awaiting my Lynn Farber(D) for District 3 sign for my yard.

Maybe one of the finer testimonials to Scales is from a Democrat, Pat Andrews of Had Enough Indy.  When Republican Paul Ogden, Libertarian-Independent Melyssa Donaghy, and Democrat Pat Andrews can agree about her dedication as a public servant- I suggest we reelect her.

  • Think Again

Angela Mansfield, Caldwell, and that’s about it.  Maybe Marilyn Pfisterer on a good day.

In the brains department, it’s a little larger field.

But for overall service, it’s slim pickens for citizens.

  • Think Again

You have a very good point there.  Nobody knows this city’s budget like Pat Andrews–except Joanne Sanders and Jackie Nytes, and they’re both retiring.

  • Think Again

Add Mary M. Adams.  Solid.  Quiet.  Effective.

  • Ramon

JoAnn Sanders and Pat Andrews never used their info or their position for their own monetary gain.  That is ethics in practice.

  • Ramon

Are you talking about the citizens of Indy or the citizens of Florida???

  • Ramon

How many relatives of Scales are going to post on here.  Kostas is head over heels better qualified that she is and he will be in the city and available to the citizens of his district.

  • Pascal

Ramon, you may thank the authorities for the removal of 5 tons of that bad grass you have been smoking.

  • Pascal

Say what you mean?  With a D prosecutor already panned for poor judgement (if not worse) you ought to wonder why so much money is raised for an office that pays so little…in salary.  Is your guy Greek by any chance?  Just wondering if that is the angle sorta why the Libertarians “invested” so much in Coleman?  Of course, they are pure and their payoff will be psychic.  What is the payoff for your guy?

  • Indyernie

You just couldn’t give the R’s a leg up, could you?

  • M Theory

Pascal…I’d just like to know where Coleman blew that $50,000, cause I don’t see him getting re-elected.

I became an Independent and quit the Libertarian party because of Coleman’s vote on the water transfer.  He promised to keep HFFT readers informed on all important matters before the council.  He had keys to the blog to do it.  He said nothing, not a word on the highest dollar vote ever before the council.

When I wrote to Coleman to inquire as to how he intended to vote he got really snotty with me and said I would have to wait until the vote to know how he was voting.

I didn’t appreciate his arrogant attitude and I was beyond pissed that he broke his word to HFFT readers.

That’s when I learned that it doesn’t matter if there is an L, D, or R by your name.  What matters is that we elect people with honor into the jobs.

Coleman’s honor was lost to me when he broke his word to me and to HFFT readers and didn’t report to us about important council matters as he promised.

Ask around, I don’t tolerate liars.

  • M Theory

I am not a relative of Christine Scales.  I am a citizen who pays attention to what she does on city council.   Christine is one of the few councilors who will write me back when I send her an email.

My own city councilor (democrat Monroe Gray) completely ignores my correspondence.

  • guest

Please direct your comments to the Marion County Libertarian Party

  • M Theory

Guest….The MCLP knows.  I told them when it happened and they did nothing
about it.  Coleman woul not apologize to me or our readers.  Instead he
was completely arrogant and acted as if I did something wrong by demanding
accountablity from my elected official. If anyone would like to see the
email exchange between me and Coleman, just let me know.  I’ll gladly share.
I used to be one of his biggest fans, but he never ever did what he
promised.  Yet, he was always there with his handout wanting me to organize a
fundraiser, donate to him, defend him on the blogs etc. I even tried to
overlook his abhorent misogynistic behavior toward women during the 2009 LP
convention dinner where he spent most of his time talking about women’s
breasts and other body parts. I remember sitting there thinking about how his wife would feel if she heard him talking like that.  It was completely disrespectful to himself, his family, and to those that had to listen to it.  Aside from the fact that he failed to inform us on city council matters, he thinks little of women.

  • Michael Hegg

Aren’t you the one who was quoted by Indianapolis Monthly regarding the night Greg Ballard was elected, somewhat intoxicated and deliriously happy, proclaiming a desire to have “hot monkey sex” (whatever the hell THAT is)?

Yeah.  Don’t be so quick as to be righteous about decorum in a public event.

And for Christ’s sake, try and be happy.  Living a life of protest and being quick to anger about politics and politicians is like pouring sand down a rat-hole..it’s a never ending-issue that won’t go away, unless, perhaps..you want to try and run for office?

Then maybe you will have some credibility to constantly bitch and moan about things you can control or at least be part of a solution.

Until then, consult it with your fellow posters, i/e Melyssa,  M AD, Sybil, whoever else.

  • M Theory

Yes, I am quoted saying “hot monkey sex”.  You bet!  I’m a private citizen, not an office holder.  I did not degrade anyone.

That quote is very accurate and I don’t regret saying it.  Yes, I was blitzed that night.

I worked the polls all day long in the cold for Ballard, I didn’t get anything to eat, and I was exhausted.  Yet, I was ready to PARTY!The comment was hilarious at the time. I am VERY VERY VERY happy these days!  (thank you) I do not want to run for office.  I prefer the role of holding my elected politicians to honor their word to me and saying something about it in public when they don’t. Last I checked as employer of the elected official my job is to pay attention when they screw up. I use the moniker ”MAD” to post only when I’m logged into an old yahoo account.  “MAD” has nothing to do with my disposition and everything to do with my initials on my profile. How’s that for transparency? You wanna know more about my work in the dungeon holding naughty men accountable when they screw up?

  • indyernie

M you do know that Mike’s a cop?
    ” Hot monkey sex” funny.
Coleman….toast come November along with the 60K from the L’s.
However ….where’s the money is a good question, the L’s may want answers.

  • M Theory

Yeah, I know Mike’s a cop.  I’m all for the L’s doing well, but not impressed with Ed Coleman’s failure to communicate with our readers when he publicly promised he would.  I’m not partisan and will blindly go with with any libertarian.   I think the LP wasted a whole lot of money when they sent $50k to Coleman.

They should have spent that money on Bill Levin!  You’ll never hear Bill Levin degrade a woman!

  • indyernie

    Is his nickname really Stoney?

  • Rico

That’s not fair, M. We all know Monroe can’t read.

  • M Theory

Ernie…I never heard anyone call Bill Levin that.  He’s one of the most articulate and coherent people I know.

  • Anonymous

I’m not a relative either.  While conservative in some ways, I also vote for at least three parties, including Len Farber, Democrat for District 3 council in the upcoming election.

I won’t dispute your subjective belief that Poulakidas is a better candidate any more than I am backing off believing in Scales (even though she doesn’t represent my district- and has endorsements from at least three public figures of differing parties/ideologies).

Ramon- I’m much more apt to sign-up for what your selling if you can tell us the Democrat that you couldn’t vote for, and therefore the Republican or Libertarian you did.  Otherwise, it appears to me your mind is as sealed shut as IndyErnie.

I welcome correction and apologize in advance if I’m proven mistaken.

  • Think Again

On THIS council?  Are you freaking kididng me?  Objectivity demands the above report.  I’ve been watching for 30 years Ernie–you? Beyond Scales, Pfisterer and Caldwell, what Republican on this council rises to the lukewarm level?  FOr that matter, few Dems do, either.

In case you haven’t been noticing, on the CCC we have a huge intellectual deficit.  And it doesn’t appear to be restricted to one party.  I can remember some good servants on past councils from the R side.  Beulah Coughenour was a favorite.  She exposed the horrid Combined Sewer Overflow issue long ago, and Goldsmitih bannished her, because the fix was expensive. Steve “Can’t Spend Money on Infrastructure” Goldsmith. The fix is more expensive now, but she was banished anyway.President Servaas.  A very effective leader. Stu Rhoades.  Bill Dowden.  And Steve West–what a remarkable man.I didn’t agree with any of them on many issues.  But I know good leadership when I see it.  Each of them was responsive to constituents and polite, effective, solid, smart.
