In Their Own Words

Here’s some audio from last night’s council meeting following the 15-14 vote to approve the parking deal.    I’d have written more but it was late and I needed to get to bed.

Mike Huber (City)

Paul Bateman (Yes Vote)

Ed Coleman (No Vote)

Ryan Vaughn (Yes Vote)

I’ll have some analysis a little later in the day.

  • Me

Who cares about a past vote affecting a few when we have a pressing issue threatening the whole community right now? I make a call Just like Ballard’s call to Peterson in the 2007 campaign. I demand Mayor Ballard put a hold on Super Bowls, Parking Deals, Expensive Mass Transit Schemes………. until he addresses the shortfalls of IMPD leadership.

Like in Peterson days, IMPD still is overall understaffed and runs short on the standard number of supervisors for “span of control”. What was Mr. Straub’s answer to this??? He chose to make top heavy promotions (where they never existed), hire a redundant Deputy Director of Training (that never existed – Straub was supposed to be the expert In this area), remodel his office, spend nearly a quarter of a million dollars on policy review (Straub was also supposed to be an expert in this area) AND CANCEL HIRING much needed new Officers.

This would not be all so sad if Ballard had not run his campaign against Peterson on just such a platform. During the 2007 campaign Ballard excoriated Peterson for these kinds of problems and has neglected to fix them. Now, he brings in Straub to hide his shortcomings with sniveling rants toward the hard working Men and Women of IMPD. He degrades them and their Department and blames them for problems he HAS NO ABILITY TO MANAGE.

  • Taxpayer 834512

Granted, I’m more concerned with the police department than parking. However, epitomy of corrupt free enterprise is what we have in the parking deal: insider choice of the vendor (ACS), the vendor has a poor reputation (Chicago, Pittsburg, FSSA), long-term agreement that’s expensive to break (double-digit millions), no access to their books, and more.

If this was such a slam-dunk sweet deal, why did it pass with a 15-14 vote? I’m not voting for Melina Kenndy her if I can help it, but I’m damn sure not voting for the corruption of Mayor Ballard, Ryan Vaughn, Tom Johns and the Barnes & Thornburg party.

  • Me

In media interviews Ballard dismisses Straub’s childish hissy fit. Ballard seems to endorse a management style of leadership by bludgeon. He dismisses and discounts the humanity of his Police Men and Women while expecting them not to do likewise toward the public.

Ballard we have HAD ENOUGH. Not that it makes Officers feel bad to be yelled at, SCUM yell at them everyday NO BIG DEAL for them. It is the message that kind of malfeasants sends. It sends a message that this guy has no leadership skills. It sends a message that he cannot articulate what the situation is and a rational PLAN OF ACTION in which to solve the problem. His style as much as you may enjoy it has FAILED TO ACCOMPLISH THE MISSION!

So, Ballard you can continue sending troops up the hill into the machinegun fire. Or, you can change your battle tactic to something that will work.

We have HAD ENOUGH of Straub driving IMPD at 70plus miles an hour in a 40 while texting the media. We have HAD ENOUGH of Straub being drunk on duty with his own ego. We have HAD ENOUGH of Straub using excessive force to beat up the morale of our Officers. And finally, we have HAD ENOUGH of you trying to cover up this CRASH with your bodyshop of media hacks.

  • Think Again

I tried to get worked up about the parking deal. I really did, Taxpayer. This pales in comparison to the water deal’s idiocy. And it pales in comparison to the lunacy of our brand-new senator’s past lobbying for Cooper Industries (Texas) and their $500 mil tax break to move their corporate HQ to Bermuda. But I digress.

But, your points are well-taken: ACS is corrupt. The break-up fee is outrageous–obviously negotiated by city lawyers, who are great at making minor edits to outside lawyers’ work for their clients.

But here’s the basic take-away for me:

If the city cannot perform a basic front-line dutylike collecting parking fees, and uses that as an excuse to farm it out, why don’t we all just pack up city government and put out an RFP to manage the city by remote control?

We could’ve and should’ve floated bonds to upgrade meters and kept this revenue stream for ourselves. The pitifull argument made by Huber and Vaughn is embarrassing for its simpleton attitude, which was, basically: the city couldn’t make this work, never has, and someone else can.

    Please.

And Mr. Bateman: your vote will not be forgotten. You’d better hope that your bank account sees not one dime of benefit from this deal. Call me suspicious. Methinks he doth supporteth too much. He’s not offered in-depth answers like he did last night, on anything in his entire council career. He was well-prepped. Beyond his ability.

It’s much easier to understand public parking issues over the current dispute between administration and rank-and-file within IMPD.

  • Think Again

I just listened again to Mr. Huber’s comments. And this Democrat has one request, Abdul:

Please, by all means, put Mr. Huber on your show and in this blog again. Over and over. So many times he becomes a co-host.

He’s our best 2011 weapon. What an arrogant public servant. I’m sure he’s got his resume dusted off, for that inevitable jump into the private sector. He’s certainly paved the way with two privatization deals, that were ill-advised. Does he have Mitch Roob on speed-dial?

The Huber and Abdul Show. Or flip the names. I like the sound of that.

  • IndyHardR

I few thoughts from last nights event.

Huber is also the guy who sold the advertising rights to Kentucky Fried Chicken to sponsor the Fire department for $5,000. Yep he gave away about %150,000 worth of advertsing for only $5,000 so KFC could put their logos on the IFD trucks. This is the type of man that is giving the Mayor advice?

Huber also hired a CHICAGO company to sell the naming rights of all ofthe city buildings and properties. Yes, he hired a Chicago firm to sell Indianapolis. So it will now be the Kraft City County Building. The Marsh Monon Trail, you get the picture.

Huber is selling the city to anyone who will give him a penny.

You cannot make this stuff up. I cannot remember our city being in such a mess.

We have a police department that is out of control

Republcians intimidating voters at polling places , Sans Chicken suits.

A Deputy mayor that would sell his soul for a buck

A Clergy that OWNS the mayor

A parking system that will not work, history tells us this

A water deal that is tainted beyong belief

A Mayor that is clueless and does not understand that those around him are costing him the election.

A mayor that travels all over the world ,trying to make us believe that it is for our city. So far not on cent has come back to us.

A CCC that could care less about the people.

A Mayor that gives his Pacer Owners Millions

I could go on ,but we all know the other great mistakes by theis man.

As much as it pains me to say this, ouy city was much better off with Peterson. I am dissapointed in the CCC. I am dissapointedin the Republican party. You basicly did the same thing that Oboma did with healthcare. You jammed this crap down our throats.

I dont like that and I dont think that I am alone.

Goodby Mr. Mayor, enjoy your retirement. Your buddies, Huber,Tom John,Straub, Bob Grand,Lutz and others have brought you down, the sad thig is that you dont even know it.

Our city is going downhill fast, it makes me very sad. I supported Ballard and many of the members of the CCC. Now I will not.One vvote is no big deal, I get that. But I have a feeling that I am not alone.

  • Think Again

Wow, Hard R. We agree. Well, not on the health care thing, but that’s OK.

Your mayor has been doomed for quite awhile, but he’s happy. Free buffets, overseas trips, Dome tickets…he’s happy.

He’ll not even get it next November.

I gotta admire a man that’s so complacent and clueless. He’s allowing Huber and Olgen to run the ship. You think the big law firms don’t know that the 25th floor is like shooting ducks in a fishbowl?

Pile on, fellas. You’ve got 12 months left to sell off something else and make big fees.

I hope there’s something left for the new mayor to govern.

  • IndyHardR

    TA,

He is not my Mayor any longer. He sold himself to the highest bidder.
I worked hard to get him elected and he only listens to a Deputy Mayor that cant even shave yet and has no clue to what goes on in the business world. Huber has spent his entire short life kissing political asses.

I spokle with one of teh CCC members today who has been a firend for years, he woudl hardly speak with me. He know that he went against the wishes of the public but felt that he really did not have a choice.

There is a full year to go. Somneon nees to hir a company to video tape the coming year. It wil make a great documentory on how to destroy a city in a few short years.

    Working title:

“Indianapolis, the only city in American that is really run by a law firm”

    Or

“The Mayor that ate the city of Indianapolis”.

This is a very sad day in the history of Indianapolis. I am very dissapointed in my Republican friends.

Well, we will have a choice in November.

  • http://twitter.com/IndyStudent Matthew Stone

Rumor is Huber voted for Peterson in 2007.

  • Think Again

    Please.

So, you’re telling me, in addition to being a huckster, he’s intellectually inconsistent? I’m shocked.

As if it made a difference for whom he voted.

  • Nick

Will we really have a choice in November or will rotate back to someone who has already sold out to the same business and political interests under a different party name?

Where is the opposition leadership that proposes real solutions and stands up early and often to defeat misguided money grabs that spans both political parties?

Matt, Rumor has it that Huber was not old enough to vote in 2007

  • Mustangsally

Only if Anderson runs, he will not take any of this shit.

  • http://twitter.com/IndyStudent Matthew Stone

Anderson who? You mean Frank Anderson, the Sheriff?

  • Think Again

Who are you talking about? Frank Anderson?

(Standing back for the missiles about to hit Sally)

“Republcians intimidating voters at polling places , Sans Chicken suits”

Tell me that you aren’t accusing me (or a chicken) of criminal activity.
And when are you bone heads going to understand that the “chicken” was more than one person?

  • indyernie

You have to be kidding!!! Frank Anderson??? Are you on drugs??? Anderson was supposed to give Merritt a run for his money and we all saw how that turned out. Anderson can’t keep the MCSD within it’s budget how in hell do you expect him to govern Indianapolis and stay within a budget? Frank Anderson…..Anderson’s done. He needs to go sit on his boat dock and fish for blue gill… that is if he can find his way to the dock.

  • MustangSally

Yes Frank, gotta problum wit dat?

  • Mustangsally

Earnie, You need to look at the votes in that district, Jim did not win by much.Your racest attitudes are getting a little out of hand here

‘He needs to go sit on his boat dock and fish for blue gill… that is if he can find his way to the dock. ”

Im not sure what is worse, a racest that hides behind a camera, or a racest that wears a Chicken Outfit.

Take your politics out of it for a second, look at what just happened in the past election, Franks Party kicked your ass.

They will do even better if Mayor Dum Dum keeps on doing what he has been doing. A doorknob could beat Ballard in the next election. If you knew anything about budgets you would know that Anderson was always in budget.

At least Frank can complete a full sentance.

Frabnk may or may not run, but at least you know where you stand with him.Is he the best choice, nope. But I still think that he is thinking about running.

  • Rico

There was nothing racist about Ernie’s comments, Sally, and you know it. Grow up!

And I would have to argue that Frank Anderson is the least articulate public servant this city has ever seen (other than Julia Carson, of course). Sure, he can complete a sentence, an unintelligible one.

  • indyernie

What are you stating? Just because I don’t think Frank Anderson would make a good Mayor that makes me racists? You are NUTS? You are the racists. Calling someone else a racist who doesn’t agree with you is racism.
Frank was a terrible Sheriff. He would be a worst Mayor and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin. Frank Anderson is a bad administrator period.
IF you think that the R’s got their asses kicked I would suggest that you take a look at Congress, who in Indiana got elected to the Senate and the leadership within Indiana’s house, look at the SOS, Treasurer, Auditor, State Senate etc. then tell me our asses got kicked.
Just because Marion County fell doesn’t make it a republican failure or a win for the democrats.
Overall, the D’s got their ASSES Spanked!

  • Think Again

Sally, honey, you’re new here, so allow me, please, to introduce some of the cast of “regular” characters:

I’m one of the few Dems. Proud of it.

Rico is my polar opposite. Proud of it. His bark is sharp, but he’s OK.

Pascal is God-knows-what, and probably proud of it.

Ernie’s a goof, and almost everyone knows it.

    There. Got it straight?

Frank Anderson is articulate. He doesn’t say much, but he’s articulate.

He lost by about 2350 votes out of 31,500 votes cast. Not the closest Senate election in the state, but one of the closest. Jim Merritt is a good guy–wrong on a lot of issues, but fair.

Rico, as for inarticulate public servants–have you heard Susie Day speak? Or the Deputy Mayor for neighborhoods, for whom you need a gibberish-to-English dictionary? For that matter, Mr. Huber is keenly aritculate, yet he opens his mouth, and nonsense rolls out.

I’m not sure Frank would be a “worst” mayor, Ernie, but he’s not running. Melina Kennedy is. I’m not thrilled with the sheriff’s budget over the last eight years. And yeah, you got your asses kicked in Marion County, by any reasonable measure. We even won inspectors for another four years with our candidate for SOS, who, by the way, was registered to vote in the precinct where he lived when he filed his declaration of candidacy.

Sally, hang around. You’re completely out to lunch on Frank’s ability to win a city-wide mayoral election, but I welcome the company anyway. Most of this crew here is friendly enough, but Ernie?

God watches out for fools and children.

  • indyernie

TA you referring to me as a “goof” is like the pot calling the kettle black. Your acceptance of and coaching a racists speaks volumes.

“God watches out for fools and children.” The Lord knows that you have a babysitter.

  • http://twitter.com/IndyStudent Matthew Stone

How about I be the adult in the room (probably much younger than everyone posting) and just say you’re ALL nincompoops :)

  • Think Again

Ernie, call me crazy, but I liked the chicken. It provided some comic relief. That was the point, right?

  • Think Again

Whatever you like, Matt. But the jury is in on Ernie.

    Sorry, Ernie.

  • pascal

Sally, you must not listen to every poster. The strength of this blog is in the interviews. The “analysis” is always suspect but the interviews, when posted, are superior. TA, usually gets it wrong but never admits it. However, his contributions to the relief of Haiti far exceed most posters, indeed, some think they should exceed those of many nations.
Pascal is a registered Democrat. He does find it difficult to vote a straight ticket, however, thinking that some candidates should not be elected but rather put into jail. He also views Republicans as having elected officials that need to be jailed for longer periods of time because they steal more. More clearly, he believes that D’s go down for nickels and dimes while R’s won’t steal much less than a railroad.
Pascal voted for that lying, cheating, cattle future’s candidate but confesses to having to hold his nose very tightly because he dislikes the idea of having her felon husband, the perjuror, the liar, the scum of all Presidents, anywhere near the White House. He is not happy with the current POS either.
As to matters Indianapolis, one has to wonder why ants get so excited about such a small dunghill.

I must admit that at times it was funny.

  • indyernie

You should how people talk about you TA.

  • Ash

I reckon the only way Ballard gets reelected is if Anderson miraculously wins the primary. It’s very telling that the only campaign commercial he ran showed old footage of his campaign for Sheriff and didn’t include a single word out of the Sheriff’s mouth. Either way it’s a useless argument, Melina isn’t just in the driver’s seat, at this point she’s the only one in the car.

All Ballard has to do is challenge him to a debate.

  • Mustangsally

You just proved my case about the quality of people that you put up to run.EVERYWHERE but Marion county the Republicans won.Yes the Republicans won big state wide and on a naitnal basis.Yes, except Marion County.Thank you for proving my point.

  • IndyHardR

I would never accuse you of any criminal activity,me thinks you a a little touchy about this subject.

Yes the chicken was more than one person, thats the scarey part.

  • Ramon

Pascal, let me remind you that if you are a voter in Indiana then you are not a registered Democrat. In Indiana, we only register to vote but we do not register by party. Those of us who are registered Indiana voters are simply registered voters.

  • http://twitter.com/IndyStudent Matthew Stone

We don’t have traditional party affiliation on our voter registration, that’s true. But you can consider yourself a “Registered [whatever]” when you vote in their primary. You’ll often notice you’ll be getting that parties’ mailers rather than the other party.

  • Ramon

You can consider yourself a giraffe but that doesn’t make you a giraffe. The fact remains we do not have “registered” Democrats or Republicans in Indiana.

  • indyernie

Tell that to PC’s and Ward Chair’s.

  • indyernie

Tell that to PC’s and Ward Chair’s.

  • indyernie

The R’s “put up” the better qualified County candidates hands down. The issue is overcoming the number of D’s that live in Marion County. It will always be an uphill battle for R’s in Marion County.
But you are welcome regardless of wither you understand the results or not.

  • Think Again

Jana Scott was a better-qualified clerk candidate? In your own world, Ernie. Only in your own world. She was and is a hack, void of rational ideas. And she lost. Hopefully she comes back for another try at elective office. If so, she would assume a ballot spot that qualified Republicans can’t occupy. Ergo a better chance at Democratic victory. I listened to two interviews she gave Abdul. That was enough. Airheads of the world unite.

Mr. Hecko and Mr. Massa were superbly qualified. They lost to qualified candidates. Citizens win.

And Ernie, I understand election results better asleep than you ever will awake, “wither” I’m awake 2 hours or 12.
