Jaws of Clay

I’ve just finished listening to an interview with Rev. Stephen Clay, the President of the Baptist Ministers Alliance,  the organization that brought Al Sharpton to town and has been “leading” the protests involving Brandon Johnson.

Although I am not of the Judeo-Christian persuasion I think the good Reverend may be breaking the commandment that has something to do with bearing false witness.

In the interview Clay responds to a question concerning the credibility of the BMA by saying it has been around for 141 years serving the city.   Rev. Clay might have wanted to choose his words more carefully because the BMA hasn’t been serving Indy since 1869,  it’s only been serving the city since March 23.

The BMA of Indianapolis is a not-for profit organization licensed with the Secretary of State’s Office this past Spring.   The national chapter may have been around since the 1800s, but these guys have only been in existence for about four months.  And lot of these problems in the black community such as murder, high drop out rates, crumbling infrastructure and economic development have been around for a while.  But I guess it’s easier to protest when the weather gets warmer.

In addition to defending his credibility, Clay also complained that the City was trying to dictate who the ministers should bring to any meeting.  He neglected to mention that the group has told City Hall that it cannot include Mmoja Ajabu from Light of the World church in any meetings, even though Light of the World organized the protest march around city hall.

And just for the record, I moderated a panel discussion this week at Indiana Black Expo regarding business opportunities for women, minority and veteran owned businesses and didn’t see the good Reverend there.  Of course it was a seminar about putting to people to work and creating economic development in your community.  But that takes effort and there are no cameras so I guess I can see why he skipped out on that one.

  • Think Again

    wow.

The BMA may be new, but they're entitled to their opinion. One smart move: keeping Mmoja out of any public discussions. He's the loosest cannon you can imagine, and he works for Tom Benjamin, whose motives are always questionable. For cause.

There are many black ministers out there doing good work without benefit of a cover organization. Charles Harrison comes to mind immediately.

  • Indiana_Barrister

TA, I agree everyone has the right to voice their opinion. However, I take issue when someone tries to claim they've been around forever when the facts clearly indicate otherwise. maybe Lacy Johnson should do a better job of coaching these guys.

  • Think Again

Ooooooh. A Lacy reference. Oh no he did-ent.

Your life insurance paid up? These folks don't play minimal games. They're in for a penny, in for a pound.

    Strong karma your way.

And I'm with you on the timeframe thing. Some groups organize at a kitchen table overnight, and get instant street cred. Why? Multiple reasons, but mostly because: 90% of our media is too effing lazy to ask the tough questions.

  • Indiana_Barrister

I've been threatened by experts! :-) If Illinois politicians don't scare me, I don't worry about the ones from Indiana.

  • Davidcme1027

I was wondering where this interview aired….hearing this will make an otherwise dull morning that more depressing.

  • Ramon

Rev. Clay is just posturing so Ballard will give him a city grant or hire him as a consultant. That man is all about the money.

  • varangianguard

My favorite was the whopper that the kids in question weren't criminals, because they weren't charged.

Reverend, that isn't why they weren't charged, and saying stuff like that doesnt' make it so.

    Propaganda at its slickest.

  • Think Again

I don't know what you're talking about. Treacy is a decent chairman…good enough a few years ago, to get his wife a judgeship. There is grumbling, but hell, it wouldn't be a Marion County Dem Party without grumbling about the chair.

A little history: when Evan Bayh got elected SOS in 1988, his top aides told me: don't go anywhere near the Marion County party. It's a cesspool. Little has changed.

It now has a winning history. And unless lightning hits, they'll win back the mayor's office. They waited out the demographic shift.

But Lacy as chairman? He can't afford to. He loves one thing–making money.

And I don't think his wife wants to be a judge.

  • joneaster

Can we move along Abdul? I'm not saying that we should sweep this under the rug, but you're getting stale on this issue. We get it by now. You've made your point.

  • indyernie

Abdul I disagree with Jon. On this issue you are providing more information and digging deeper than the local news and your insight and perspective is refreshing. Keep reporting and exposing…Indianapolis needs to see and hear about the corruption.

  • Abdul

Go to praiseindy.com. It was done by my counterpart Amos brown.

  • Abdul

I think I'll write about my Vop Osili man-crush. It seems to be a recurring thread on some blogs.

  • joneaster

    Good one!

  • joneaster

I am not surprised you disagree with me Ernie. In fact, I would find it more surprising if you didn't.

  • Rmoney

    Varangian –
So why weren't they charged. If I remember correctly only Brandon was unjustly beat by the police therefore I can see why perhaps the prosecutor didn't charge him with anything.

Now pertaining to the other kids that were arrested without any issues if they did something worth prosecuting why didn't the prosecutor press charges??

In your opinion to be considered a criminal only thing you have to do is be arrested by the police. No due process? No innocent until proven guilty?

Whatever those young men were doing it didn't warrant them to be charged even after they were arrested.

You can come to your own conclusions, but calling them criminals when they weren't charged is a bit of a stretch.

Yes Yes Abdul I know – blacks lead in crime rate, high school dropout rate, unemployment, single parent housholds.

  • Rmoney

LOL – What additional information has Abdul provided? He has added his opinion (his blog so he should) but not much additional information.

  • http://hoosiersforfairtaxation.blogspot.com/2010/07/common-sense-solution-to-citys.html Melyssa

Abdul, I would like to hear more about that Black Expo panel discussion about business opportunities for minorities.

  • Rmoney

    I would also.

  • varangianguard

Why weren't they charged. OK, I'll play. Because it was a political football. And, it was apparent that at least one policeman had crossed a line. Which, I notice the Reverend, ,et al, had no difficulty in condemning without due process, btw.

I think a witness seeing one young man attempting to kick in a door justification for an arrest, and likely charges. Police were called, after all, and I wonder how often that happens in certain parts of the City? Little trust in the police, or the Prosecutor's office.

I know this answer sounds off-the-cuff, but I don't have time to present a fact-filled, deeply-reasoned argument just now.

  • Old White Dude

I would also, since every contract I have with the city or state requires me to hire an MBE and a WBE. However if a MBE or a WBE gets a state contract directly they dont have to hire a white company. Hmmmmmm. Seems fair. Im sure that TA thinks so.

  • indyernie

Like most of America Jon I'm just sick and tired of the damm democrats trying to tell us all what we should do.

  • Taxpayer 834512

What's the “For Dummies” explanation of Mr. Lacy Johnson? I don't get many invites to Democratic stategy sessions. Please. Thank you.

  • Ramon

..but you want your elitist, racist Republicans to tell us what to do!!

  • indyernie

Ramon don't call me a racist…you don't know me and until you do you would be best served by not applying labels. If there is a racist on this site I would vote for you after reading most of your posts.
I will state for a fact that the Republican Party is the party which made all Americans free. It wasn't the democrats, they enslaved and have kept people enslaved for almost a hundred years after the Civil War.
It's too bad you didn't pay more attention in school. Those history lessons that you slept thru would have provided insight.
You would be smarter today than you think you are if you would only pay attention.

The only politican I know of who is considered an elitists resides in the White House and he isn't a Republican.

  • indyernie

I need to correct the spelling of the word “politician” before Jon or TA have a chance to correct me.

  • Rmoney

Looks like Indyernie's history is full of gaps.

Right around Nixon's southern strategy is where his history goes blank. LOL

  • Rmoney

This is incorrect – Every contract doesn't require you to hire a MBE or WBE. You may have decided to partner with a MBE or WBE because it helps your chances to be awarded the contract. There are plenty of contracts on the public in.gov website that show you are either out right lying or being disingenuous in this discussion.

  • indyernie

Forth grade US History tells the story…take a few minutes and crack a book…. then come back to the adult table.

  • Rmoney

See the problem is I continued to crack open books and read them passed the Fourth grade.

I thought it was common knowledge that Lincoln was a Republican and MLK's father was a Republican, but pretty much after the civil rights laws were passed that the parties pretty much did a switch-a-roo when it comes to matters of race aka (State Rights)

Look no matter how loud you want to yell about what the Republicans did back in the 1800s there is a reason why the current Republicans have the reputation they do with Black people.

It has nothing to do with Welfare payments and everything to do with their base target audience.

Yes Yes Abdul I know – blacks lead in crime rate, high school dropout rate, unemployment, single parent housholds.

  • Rico

The socio-economic progress of the black community was stifled by the so-called civil rights movement. That's when your Party hijacked the movement. That is when your Party alleviated their white guilt by telling black Americans they weren't as smart or as capable as whites and ,therefore, needed a head start. And that's when your Party began their efforts to tear down the black family unit.
As a Democrat, are you proud of what your Party has done for the black community? Are you proud of what the NAACP has done for blacks? (The very same NAACP who named Bill Clinton, a lying, cheating philanderer, as its Image man of the Year several years back.)

With your last paragraph, you seem to make light of a very real situation in the black community. Your Party has done its best to make as many black Americans dependent on the federal government as possible, thereby guaranteeing their vote.

The Dems are the Party who has hyphenated Americans. They are the bigots, racists, and elitists. Now, as a result of your Party's efforts, we have the least experienced, most incompetent president in our nation's history who was voted in for one reason–his pigment. Wow! What progress!

  • Indy4U2C

Mmoja Ajabu apparently is T. Garret “Collection Plate” Benjamin's top advisor on parenting. As he stands next to Benjamin in many photo on the Johnson matter, as a parent, Ajabu raised a son who was convicted of the murder of a white family in their home. As for an advisor on “No Justice, No Peace” (Clay's followers carry signs in the march), Ajabu is also well-qualified! Ajabu's house burned down in what was ruled an arson. No charges were ever brought in the case, but Ajabu's insurance company refused to pay his claim. Ajabu sued the company as a result, but lost after attorneys presented evidence that he had a financial motive to start the fire. No money was ever paid.

Three months later, Ajabu appeared in Wedowee, Ala., Hours after Ajabu gave a speech touting the New Black Panthers, the school was burned to the ground.

No Justice, No Peace….not what Jesus would do!

Clay, “Colletion Plate” Benjamin, Ajabu will all stand in front of the media as long as the media will give them press.

    Rico -

As a Independent thinker I believe Democrats are the lesser of two evils. You have a bunch of points that I disagree with, chief among them is Affirmative Action.
I think it was and is still needed. I don't think it tells blacks they aren't smart enough, it doesn't create qoutas and no where in the law can you point to where it does.
When it is implemented correctly it does wonders for disadvantaged and oppressed people. See Rooney Rule in the NFL for example A.

If you take the NAACP from its inception then yes I am proud of what the NAACP has done for blacks. As with any organization they have had their ups and downs and now trying to figure out the best way to serve their
    community.

While Democrats might have hyphenated Americans, In my view the current Republicans don't even see us as “Real Americans” You don't think they are talking about black people when they use those
terms to crowds of 100% white people do you? If you do then I am glad for you that you are able to view this world the way you do. I don't have that luxury.

Last but not least White America (as a population) still hasn't elected anyone but a White Male to be president. Roughly 43% voted for Obama.

While what you say might be true he was still heads and shoulders better than his opponent.
The last paragraph is my signature. It is for Abdul

Yes Yes Abdul I know – blacks lead in crime rate, high school dropout rate, unemployment, single parent housholds.

  • Indy4U2C

Didn't the area burglary spree stop when the police arrested this POS? That says it all!

  • Rico

I was no fan of McCain. In fact, he was virtually my last choice on the GOP side. But the only thing Barry was better at than McCain was looking and sounding good. McCain, at the very least, was a good American. Your guy doesn't even like this country or the principles on which it was founded.

I submit to you that an experienced, black conservative would be
welcomed by the GOP. That same candidate would be villified by the Dems, particularly black Dems.

The NAACP has become a joke. They aren't about the advancement of anyone(despite their color) except for liberals.
Any conservative-minded black American is demonized by your Party.

And I submit to you, based on what I've seen, that Barry and the Democrat leadership have no concept what it means to be a 'real American'. Conservatives believe in individual freedom and liberty. Your Party apparently has nothing but contempt for those concepts.

  • http://hoosiersforfairtaxation.blogspot.com/2010/07/common-sense-solution-to-citys.html Melyssa

I ought to start a WBE.

  • Taxpayer 834512

I may not be fond of calling our President “Barry”, but I don't truthfully see much to disagree with, except McCain would likely have had us stuck longer in Iraq than President Obama. Based on surface biographies, Obama doesn't have an ugly divorce. But, our he seems very, very detached from America for someone who's been elected to lead it.

I think the NAACP helps pepetuate a pseudo-segregation of black and white America. I'm not sure, at this point, that Affirmative Action is a net gain either. However, both major parties are guilty of opportunistic villifying (sp?). Statesmanship and integrity seem like they're at an all-time low for my lifetime. But, does every American in middle age look back upon the United States this pessimistically?

  • Think Again

Well that's like shooting ducks in a barrel, Ernie. My half-dead arthritic 15-year-old dog provides more info than most local media. Duh.

  • Think Again

Wow. Ernie and Rico dueling for lowest common denominator. Interesting. But hardly informative.

You can have your own opinion, Ernie. But you can't have your own facts. Whatever “forth” grade subject you prefer.

“Base target audience” ? Tell me, Ernie–when you pull up to a stop sign, do your lips move? Because that level of intelligence is about all that's apparent in some of your posts. Pathetic. Slack.

    Rico, stop egging him on.

  • Rico

You and those of your ilk are the lowest common denominator, TA.
