Counting Calories

On most days I’m not a big fan of excessive government regulation, however this is one of those times when the regs don’t really bother me and in fact might actually do some good.

Under the new health care law restaurants with more than 20 chains must disclose the number of calories in the food they serve.  Now before some of you yell and scream that this totally smacks of of fascism and socialism, I ask you to take a deep breath and relax.

There is nothing wrong with giving consumers information so they can make more informed decisions and exercise a little personal responsibility.   I decided to get healthy this year and have dropped about 25 pounds since January.  And my long term goal is to get back to what I weighed when I graduated college which is 205.  I have about 12-15 pounds to go by May 23.  Having the calorie information in front of me makes a world of difference, primarily because I’m on the go and eat out a lot. For someone of my height, build and exercise activity I need about 2,300 calories a day.  And it’s amazing how that can add up real quick by 3 p.m.

Now I will gladly admit that when the federal government starts mandating certain foods have a certain amount of calories, we’ve got an issue.  But giving consumers information so they can make an informed choice is not some draconian measure.  It’s no different than having a bar put up a sign and let patrons know whether it is smoking or non-smoking and letting them make their own decision.

Now I have to work out.  Got a goal to reach by May!

  • Think Again

You're on a noble mission, and your heart will thank you.

Good luck tho. It's hard. I think I'll hit 2300 by noon. Long's Donuts enroute to office this morning. There's 1500 right there.

    Damnit.

  • jackthelad

Well this should put the last of the artisan restaurants out of business. I just can’t wait until there is nothing left but soulless, flavour-free chain shops, selling nothing but Soilent Green. YUMMM!

  • Think Again

TREMENDOUS Solient Green reference. Fantastic movie.

Look around, Jack. There are still plenty of folks who obviously partake of the calories. I'm sure Abdul will too, like I do: in moderation.

  • jackthelad

Several of my mates are Chefs. If this twaddle goes through, they’re (pardon the pun) toast. Have you any idea of the cost for caloric analysis, for a rotating seasonal menu?

I would like to see one instance of the successful legislation of reason or, self-control. This is nearly as hilarious as the former Mrs. Jack the lad’s comment of: “Your cooking made me fat”! The factor making her argument moot, is the fifty pounds she gained, after the divorce.

The largest problem IS self-control. Or, maybe everyone has become too fat and lazy to do that for themselves, too. After all, the warning on Viagra adverts indicates that one’s tadger might explode but, there are those whom would have it in a PEZ dispenser…

Again, what ever became of self-control and, personal responsibility? And, what makes anyone think that more “government” is a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution or, replacement for reason?

  • Think Again

Tadger…LOL…I always laugh at the Cialis commercial: “If erection continues for more than four hours, consult a physician.” As if THAT'S the first person I'll call with that, uh, predicament.

It's not difficult, Jack, to assess the caloric value of any food. The food prep method can alter it, but I believe restaurants can list the caloric value of all ingredients, and let customers decide.

I've shifted to low-cal sour cream, still use real butter, and use low-sugar ingredients when I can, and when it doesn't compromise taste. The control mechanism I use is the time of day and time of week. I let weekends be my “no calorie count” timeframe, and try to watch what I'm eating through the week. Today, I had Long's Donuts. I'll eat veggies along tonight. And probably all day tomorrow.

The result? Holding my own. Up some weeks, down others…about 6-8 lbs. I'm constantly chasing, but not gaining beyond that.

Your chef buds can adapt to this.

  • Taxpayer 834512

No fascism or socialism. No N-words or “Domestic Terrorist”. If this was as controversial as the health care legislation got, we'd all drift back to sleep and you could make your 87th post on smoking in Marion country.

Ask the major corporatations now taking million and billion dollar accounting charges this quarter if counting calories is their biggest concern in the health legislation. Ask their workers if they have any concern about their level of benefits. Major corporations, employing major quantities of people.

It would be a sunny day if counting calories was the biggest concern.

  • jackthelad

“It's not difficult, Jack, to assess the caloric value of any food.” Written as expected: With less knowledge than ego.

I suppose it would be wise to tell the next Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Calder &c…that their formats and materials will be limited to monochromatic, non-toxic, biodegradable items, as well. Let’s just put on those integral-blinder, rose coloured glasses, so the uniform shade of gray won’t interfere with the agendas, stated, un-stated or statist.

I have still seen NO statement of reason. I enjoy a good patisserie (something better than Long’s) but, how long will it be before they are regulated out of existence, too? I am an organic gardener who grows enough to keep two families supplied through summer & winter but, if they have their way with HR 875, that too, will be regulated. The meat, poultry, eggs and cheese I purchase from my Amish friends, must be marketed as pet food, because it might actually be better for humans than the sterile, shade-of-gray standard of the schizophrenic FDA.

Until then, I’ll listen to Alice Waters, Jacques Pépin, Weston Price, Sally Fallon, Anthony Worrall Thompson, Jamie Oliver or, any other of a long line of well read, skilled food professionals–rather than a doughnut swilling blog-it-all or, some myopic, anencephalic bureaucrat.

  • wilson46201

“restaurants with more than 20 chains must disclose the number of calories in the food they serve”

Some of the commenters here eat better than they can read. This new regulation applies to big outfits like McDonalds and Olive Garden, not small, local restaurants like Elmos Steakhouse or the Country Kitchen…

  • jackthelad

Nice try Wilson. But, in NY it has already spilled in to single front restaurants. When was the last time a bureaucrat didn’t extrapolate stupidity to the n-th degree? As one chef friend asked: “How many patrons will be interested in a six page menu, requiring degrees in advanced chemistry and forensic accounting?” C’est la vie–I have tried to introduce the concepts of common sense and, personal responsibility. Pearls before swine? Head on back to the deep-fried trough, and try to find a USDA inspected scapegoat (with nutrition labelling).

  • wilson46201

Nice try, jackthelad. But we are talking about the new U.S. law, not isolated local existing ordinances. Your obfuscations about bureaucrats wont change the facts in the lawbooks…

  • Think Again

Jack, have you been dieting too much lately? You're kinda crabby.

And, it's obvious, you're sleeping with a dictionary. Makes for a lumpy bed. And lumpy head.

You oughta try Long's sometimes. On those rare cocasions when I indulge, it's delightful. A strong local small business that continues to deliver high-quality to its customers. Stop being a food snob. It's unbecoming.

I don't profess to have the cooking skills of you or those you mention.

Your life will get a lot easier if you stop looking everywhere for villains.

And calorie counting/charting IS an easy adaptation. For anyone. Most especially brilliant chefs. All the information you need is available on the net already…just cook, dial in your individual sauces and touches, browse, click and paste.

  • jackthelad

Hahahahah Wilson! Where do you think those chuckle heads got the idea? According to ABC News (or, are they too conservative for you?), from similar laws in Chicago, NY and other large cities, where it has burgeoned, as it will, on a national level.

Sorry you’re threatened by educated people, TA. In future, I shall try to write at a ninth form level. And, speaking of villains–Pottles & Kets.

The very people who need these things the most, are the ones least likely to use them. Nor, would they be likely to give a flying fandango, so long as they get their daily allotment of .grease and preservatives.

At this point, on this subject, with these participants, I shall heed my father’s admonition of: “Never try to teach a pig to sing.”

  • Long's doughnuts are the best and when the food police come to power their days will be numbered. Were I looking for the culprit in the food fiasco mess it would be the “food” forced on innocent kids in government schools by ignorant fools.
However, one has to applaud the idea that someone could lose 25 pounds in such short order. It is a difficult accomplishment and it will be difficult to maintain it. But, it is a really smart thing to do because Mother Nature makes it harder and harder as you age. Even so, jackthelad sounds like the fellow to dine with every now and then even if the allusion to Solient Green was to a book-not a movie.
Send $5 to Haiti. And think about the enormous subsidies given to the US consumer's food supply and whether that intervention by masking true costs, has led to overconsumption of food. Nationals of Europe, for instance, are amazed at our portions (as are we at the small size of their's when we travel over there). Food stamps as something for the poor or like free lunchs in the schools, a prop to demand for the American “small farmer” like ADM?

  • Dave

After seeing him a couple weeks back (public event), I can vouch for Abdul, he looks great.

Generally, people who rise @ o'dark thirty each morning are disciplined folks, therein lies the answer.

Counting calories is but one method of dieting & we don't need more of the ninnie state. The camel's nose doesn't belong under the mess tent.

  • malercous

Abdul: Your being reasonable about regulation is really tarnishing the Repunlican brand, please cease and desist. Reason has no place in the party. Remember, this is not your father's GOP. Once again, please drink the Kool-Aid. All of it. Its lo-cal.
I see you have a new follower here. Seems like a real rocket surgeon. He's so “educated” he makes T.A. feel “threatened.” Precious.

  • jackthelad

    Malarkeyous,

Actually, I turned down the job with Northrop-Grumman, and put the engineering degree to better use than “Rocket Surgery.” (Oh, by the way, that “rocket surgery” mixed metaphor was just as funny when the other Jethro Bodine told it, forty years ago.)

Better lay off of the kool-aide jokes! According to a friend of mine, Abdul thinks they are inherently racist.

You aren’t the first blatant racist to insinuate that I might be “uppity” and, you will likely not be the last.

  • John Doe

This is nothing more than another unfunded government mandate placed upon private business. Who is going to ultimately pay for this printed information: The business owners. Maybe they can cut back someone's hours to make up for the costs? Anyways, if consumer information is such a good thing, why limit it to only places with more than 20 locations? That smacks of nothing more than the government attacking “big business” once again.

If the health of this nation is _that_ bad that we need this regulation, then I don't want the government to stop here. Think of it this way: If you stab my back, don't be surprised when I don't rush to your aid when someone turns around and stabs you in the back. This is exactly where I am at in terms of caring for this country. So called pro-individual freedom, anti-government intrusion “conservatives”, or whatever, have turned a blind eye towards these small intrusions placed upon private business. As such, from here on out, I am going to be 100% on the most radical, the most strict smoking bans. What's good for one, is good for all. If one is supportive of this sort of mandate being placed upon private businesses, with absolutely no government funding for printed materials, etc., then we have to look at the reason why this is needed. Obviously this is about health. If the health of this nation is such at risk, maybe it is time to raise taxes on tobacco and alcohol, and restrict their use to private homes?

  • John Howard

Do not think, use no personal judgement, the government will do it all for you.

Zager and Evans were 5 centuries off the mark.

  • Think Again

You're probably right, John Howard. I like the caloric count thing. Maybe if it were strictly voluntary, we'd make our choices accordingly. That works for me.

  • Think Again

    “Threatened,” Jack?

Surely you jest. Hardly so. Hardly.
