Monday Morning Musings
Here are some political tidbits you might have missed to get your Monday morning off to the usual start. As usual take them for what they are worth…
Don’t be surprised if the next Public Safety Director for Marion County is from out of town.
Former City-Controller Kathy Davis says she’s considering a run for Mayor in 2011.
Expect Brian Williams to hit Melina Kennedy on her “record” of job creation which some Democrats say isn’t what she proclaims it to be.
Marion County Democratic Sheriff candidate John Layton may have some serious explaining to do soon.
The city has received about a dozen or so bids regarding privatization of the operations of Lucas Oil, Conseco Fieldhouse and the new Convention Center.
The Wayne Township Board is getting ready to vote itself a pay raise and retirement benefits.
Former Franklin Township Assessor Becky Williams is running for County Assessor in 2010.
Marion County Health Officials say Smoke Free Indy should not use public money to attack the Mayor or political parties. They also say they are open to other ways to curb tobacco use rather than a total ban on smoking in bars and taverns.
Speaking of which Governor Mitch Daniels says he would sign a smoking ban if it got to his desk, but did not go into details. He also says the economic benefits of smoking bans are grossly exaggerated.
And in case you were wondering, the Governor says his campaign isn’t giving back any money it may have taken from financeer Tim Durham because it’s already been spent.

LMAO. A former township assessor running for countywide office Good luck with that. Didn't she defend the township government system to the bitter end on your radio show? A Republican to boot.
Fat chance.

The main economic gain is to Pfizer. You must realize that a well funded “war on smokers” is underway. Here's where it started:
http://www.rwjf.org/pr/product.jsp?ia=143&id=14912
And what the 99 million dollars was going to. Note on page seven the “inside -out”, provision going for patios later, AFTER business owners spend thousands of dollars to build them to accommodate their smoking customers, clearly showing that the tobacco control activists have ABSOLUTLY NO CONCERN about local issues or businesses. You may need to CTRL and scoll to enlarge it.

Here's the “model ban” from page eight that many communities copied, printed, and passed. It's the “smoking ban for dummies” It only takes a few minutes to fill in the blanks naming your community, the administrators names, and blanks to customize it to your community. Note that it doesn't mention patios. They don''t want anyone to know that they will be targeted next.

There are much better ways to get people to stop smoking than Smoke Free Indy's attacks with public dollars.
For instance, where I work you can get free smoking classes and are given a bonus up to $1000 if you quit for a year.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Melyssa, isn't that an incentive to “start” smoking and then “quit” so you can get the bonus?

So far no one has cheated that I am aware of. I do have a couple friends who smoked a long time and got the $1000 reward after a year and never went back to smoking.

If politicians could actually create and sustain economically viable jobs then maybe yesterday would have been a good time to demonstrate this ability. Or, Tomorrow. But, since they cannot do so today, yesterday, or tomorrow, why not end the LIES that they can? Really, only serious fools think that by electing other fools that jobs will be created. Governments destroy jobs just as parasites destroy hosts. Judge Kennedy on her merits, if any, not on some phony myths of job creations. The next political liar who touts his job creation ability ought to be made to put up or shut up and, in any case, withdraw any support for him or her for the reason being an incapacity to speak truth.

Pascal has it right. Only those who desire the coddling of “special access” look to government or politicians for oxymoronic notions of “job creation,” business folks hear it as the punch line to a joke.

are you referring to the White Plains connection? The guy that quit before he was fired and went against the relsolutions of the city council?
December 7th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
You mean the White Plains connection? The same guy that went against the city councils resolutions. If so, it will be another mayberry public safety fix. This guy has no clue how to run a major Fire dept let alone fire and police. Thats why there are problems in IFD now. Just wait till the lawrence twp mess heats up. wow

I ask again: why do we even need a public safety director? Just have the chiefs report directly to the mayor. Another layer of govt. is NOT what we need, especially at this cost.
Am I missing something here?

Ding…ding…give TA a prize.
Commenting further on government…
It's rare indeed when government can actually deliver — in a cost-effective manner — on what it promises. Then again, how much of what government is actually involved with is actually within its Constitutional purview ???
December 7th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Another rare moment when I agree with TA.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:40 am
And by former City Controller, you also mean FORMER LT. GOVERNOR, right???
December 9th, 2009 at 11:00 am
I agree Becky Williams was part of the problem in the sense of Township gov't. But, based on listening to her experience and descriptions of where the wheels can fall off the assessment/property tax wagon, I only wish our President had that much experience.
.
Another, “Aye!”, to no Public Safety Director.
