IMHO

Although I’ve been in the “opinion” business for six years now, it still amazes me sometimes at the reaction I get from people.   I criticize Sarah Palin, I’m a liberal Democrat.  I  agree with one of Mitch Daniels’ policies, I’m a Republican shrill.

I get e-mails all the time from someone telling me, “you’re a journalist, you’re supposed to be fair and objective.” My personal favorites will always be the one from the guy who told me “I don’t want to listen to no terrorist talk radio.” I wrote him back telling him he was using a double-negative so he actually did want to listen to terrorist talk radio.  The other is from a lady who used the n-word in her correspondence but misspelled it, I wrote her back, correcting her spelling, and asking her not to add to the stereotype of the ignorant bigot.

I bring this up because I think some people are confused as to what I do for a living.  I am a commentator, which means I comment and offer opinions about local, state and national issues.  I am not a pure journalist in the sense of the term because I can do more than report facts, I can offer opinions.  I do use my journalistic and reporter skills when gathering information.  I also use my attorney skills, my comedian skills, and on a good day on the air, my acting skills.  They tend to come in pretty handy.

I make it a point to treat most people fairly most of the time, but every once in a while, I’ll admit to maybe having a little too much fun at some knuckleheads’ expense.  But I am actually under no obligation to objective, unbiased, fair or anything of the sort.   My job is not to be fair, it’s to be right.  However, to do this job properly you have to look at the facts as objectively as possible in order to draw the right conclusions.   We may interpret the facts differently, but hey that’s America.   And as far as elected officials go, my bias more toward the ones who aren’t jerks, than their political philosophies.

So the next time you read something or hear something on the radio show and you think I’m an arrogant, pompous, self-absorbed, egotistical, unfair loudmouth, you’re probably right.  And oddly enough, so I am. Thanks for reading, listening, watching and allowing me to do a little refresher for everyone.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Folks, he's right -- he's no journalist. Because if he were, he would have caught that 'shill' and 'shrill' are not the same thing. Unless you're referring to Katie Couric.
  • pascal
If I were TA I wouldn't respond either since liberals can't stand truth and must deny reality. And, so, they lie. And, they repeatedly lie, and they distort. In their view everything is relative, which makes lying easier. Came across this little gem to share with the few females who might read this blog....http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/11/the_wilding_of_sarah_palin.html but liberal girlie men would find it useful as well.
  • malercous
Abdul; my problem with you is that you aren't an ideolouge. If you were it would be so much easier for me to poke fun at you. While you do come at some issues from an ideological perspective you are open to reason and fact, the signs of an independent thinker. This is squrely in contradiction with your claim to being a republican, which you're not. You my friend, are an "independent" leaning to the right.
"Comedian" skills? I think the word you want is "comedic." And you have such skill? Really? Now I don't get your program where I live so maybe that's where you display them, but really? I just don't get that. Have others told you you're funny? (Family doesn't count. Neither does your appearance)
Go ahead, say something funny. A nice easy softball, hit it out of the park. Make me laugh.

Ouch! But if Abdul is just a commentator then he's at Tully level too. He can't report the facts on Palin because he basically has only the one side from all of his sources. Not likely he could be right, if that is his job. What distinguishes him, he renounces, e.g. he gets off his butt and wears out shoe leather. I've seen him before the Guv's mansion and in the Legislature. When he does facts he adds value. Commentators aren't worth used toilet paper without the facts to back them up. Consider, "She got out because every damned one of those ethical complaints had teeth. " As posted by one of our regular liberals who hadn't read Sarah's book". Now, he knows that is a false statement. Will he man up and confess before all that he was mistaken again? No doubt the issue is also in Abdul's memory banks as "factual" since ethic complaints were filed, hundreds of them. Any commentator worth a pinch of salt would immediately detect the odor of s*** concerning the validity of hundreds of complaints. We are back to Rex's pancake again being mighty thin for not having two sides. I think Abdul does a good job with getting the facts most of the time but not on Palin. He blew it by foregoing a great source for facts. Journalists often lie by omission on purpose-this one fails the subject for being off in the fiction section of la la land. TA can obtain partial redemption for agreeing with Palin's media characterization and even making it known to the cheap skates who don't have a copy of the book.

Rico, you clearly don't pay attention. I want good government. On this blog, I've wondered multiple times why Tully and the Ch. 13 guy didn't go bonkers at the sit-down televised interview. Kevin Rader looked completely ignorant, and Tully....well, if I were his editor, I'd have fired him for journalistic incompetence.

Not only did Tully fail to ask any questions on-air...he was one of only two or three journalists who witnessed the tragic mental mishap by the late Ms. Carson. He had a duty to follow-up and report on his findings.

So don't go off making assumptions again. It only makes you look, well...kinda like Tully.

It's unfortunate that an "opinion guy" provides some of our best journalism and reporting. Can someone name a local broadcaster that will more freely air both sides of public opinion on issues?

It's even more unfortunate that today's "journalism", theoretically held to a higher bar than Abdul, ignores as much as it informs. It can provide in-depth exposes on non-political issues like the dangers of asbestos exposure, the local library construction debaucle, and two waves of Sarah Palin within America, while ignoring thorough pursuit of birth, health, college, and political history and records of President Barrack Obama.

I would contend that "look(ing) at the facts as objectively as possible in order to draw the right conclusions" would include observing that America spends too much money. Whether it's the Concord Coalition, the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, or the frequent warnings of Democratic Senator Evan Bayh, it's seems conclusive to me that Harvard Medical Dean, Dr. Jeffery Flier, had it right Nov 17th in the WSJ. Living in a state (Massachusetts) with state-run health care, he observed, "Here, insurance mandates similar to those proposed in the federal legislation succeeded in expanding coverage but- despite predictions- increased total spending." He summarized earlier in the article, " In effect, while the legislation would enhance access to insurance, the trade-off would be an accelerated crisis of health-care costs and pepetuation of the current dysfunctional system- now with many more participants. This will make the eventual solution even more difficult."

I wish all our opinion guys, journalists, reporters, and dishonest hacks alike would conclude that we need to reduce Federal spending NOW: proposed health care legislation, Afghanistan, and all programs across-the-board.

    Honky,

As always I appreciate it when readers catch my typos. The curse of thinking faster than I type. And by the way, that's Mr. Asshole to you! Thanks.

    Abbie,
Follow up on this lead. Pubic safety (IMPD and IFD) will not be getting there negotiated contract raise of 5% for 2010 per the Mayors office. If you remember, under Peterson, IPD went without a raise for 2 years. Now this will be a 3rd year.

    What solid advice..............

I'm surprised Tully isn't your hero, TA. He actually witnessed Julia Carson hallucinate during an interview during her 2006 congressional campaign, and failed to report it until after the election. He practicallly guaranteed a Carson for life in Indy by not reporting the truth. Isn't that what you want?
  • Think Again
Calling Tully's work "Journalism" is an insult to journalists everywhere. Except for the latest Manual HS series, few of his columns are anything more than a last-minute rant or poorly-written wanderings.

I come here because you usually tee-up issues better than most bloggers or commentators. Some of the commentators get under my skin, and I'm sure it's true vice-versa. A little bit of civility from time to time is what we all lack.

You seem to be either begging for suggestions, or self-confirming your views. Either way, you own the blog, you can do what you like.

But if you want suggestions: I'd stick to one or two posts about a subject on which you're passionate. The smoking thing has become, well, obnoxious.

Overall, a solid A-minus, Abdul. We had nothing like this until you got here. Cheers.

Actually, over the past year or two you have seem to become very non-controversial. I rarely listen to your radio show anymore because of your apparent lack of desire to take a clear stand on an issue. Every guest seems to be a "dear friend of the program" and rarely gets an aggressive interview from you. That is what we enjoyed about your early years and what we miss now. If I want vanilla journalism, I will read Tulley.
  • Indiana_Barrister
Everyone is a friend and when friends act up you call them on the carpet. Or it could be that people have started behaving better since I showed up.
  • melyssa
    Ditto.

I think it is pretty funny that mention pointing out spelling and grammar mistakes from various commenters, but then pull off two errors (that I noticed) in this post.

...not a pure journalist in the since of the term... <- I believe you mean "sense"

...fun at some knuckleheads expense... <- Forgotten apostrophe. Should be "knuckleheads'" or "knucklehead's".

All that said, it is pretty safe to say we all struggle in these regards from time to time. Polite corrections are one thing, but to use them to prop up yourself as somehow superior (which is arguably) what you did, just makes you an asshole.

In fairness, you do admit to being perhaps, "arrogant, pompous, self-absorbed, egotistical, unfair loudmouth", but most people view these as character flaws. Perhaps they are right.
  • Rico
You do yourself no favors when you write such a post in an attempt to grammatically correct other posters. Please proof-read your posts before posting (that is, if you're goal is to correct previous posts). Better yet, stick to the substance of the posts. We have Think Again and Wilson as the Grammmar Cops. It makes them feel important. For the love of God, don't rob them of that!
  • Rico
ya see? I meant your goal.
  • wilson46201
By now, I'm sure some are dismissing you as merely a L.I.N.O.
  • Dave
You ain't not trickin' us into any love notes 'bout yewe or yer show.
  • Rico
Apparently, your definition of jerk differs from mine. I do appreciate and enjoy the blog, Abdul, and agree that your opinion is on what this blog and your radio show are based. Many of us feel, however, you 'jumped the shark' when you threw your conservative principles out the window and supported Barry for president. You either ignored all the facts about Barry's liberal agenda or didn't care. So please explain what is right about the 'identity politics' you clearly favor?
  • You'd also have to ask the same of thousands of other Hoosiers who split their ticket between Daniels and Obama.
  • agman
While I do not listen to you radio show---not from Indy area, but do enjoy your comments on variety of issues on this blog. Having followed things here for several months, you are right about the variety of names you and others who post here are called. Sometimes it is as if simply agreeing to disagree is just not enough. The name calling and nit picking go way beyond civility of debating any issue.
Please keep the course and provide food for thought and sometimes simply entertainment from you and from following the various posters.
  • Indiana_Barrister
    GP,

Thanks. I like to think of it as open-minded. I don't do dogma very well.
  • gp38_2
If you get accusations of conservatism when on one point, and liberalism when on another, you're either very fair, or a libertarian. :-)
