Not By “Choice”

Parents at nearly a dozen Indianapolis Public Schools may actually get to exercise their school choice option.  According to the Indiana State Department of Education, 10 IPS schools are on their fourth year of academic probation, which means under state law, parents can transfer their kids to another school in the district.  In addition,  the state can send in teams to assist failing schools in helping them approve and if necessary, a complete state take-over.

The list of IPS schools entering their fourth year of probation are listed below…

  • Arlington Community High School
  • Broad Ripple High School
  • Emmerich Manual High School
  • Northwest High School
  • Forest Manor Middle School
  • Emma Donnan Middle School
  • Booth Tarkington School 92
  • Willard J Gambold Middle School
  • Thomas Carr Howe Comm High School
  • George Washington Community

Ironically, House Democratic lawmakers inserted language into the last budget bill that would have capped charter schools to one per district, arguing there are too many charter schools in IPS and in Gary.  Looking at some of the results from the DOE, there apparently aren’t enough.

  • Jacob

Fine. There aren’t enough charter schools. Is there any evidence, of any kind, to suggest parents or community leaders want these kids to succeed? And what does success look like?

  • pascal

There is not enough tar or feathers in the world for these liars and losers. The backloading of “progress” on NCLB by Indiana and its loser administrators and school superintendents is an economic crime. It is bad enough to waste money but wasting the lives of kids by lying to them and their parents is not a sin that should be forgiven.

    Here is the data:

    Corporation, percent passing, change

    IPS Probation, 57.3, -1.5
    Decatur Township, Watch, 69.5, -1.6
    Lawrence Township, Watch, 67.8, -0.5
    Perry Township, Watch, 74.4, +0.8
    Pike Township, Watch, 68.2, -1.6
    Warren Township, Watch, 71.5, +0.5
    Washington Township, Watch, 75.7, -0.2
    Wayne Township, Watch, 67.8, -0.2

There are no charter schools in Washington township, but families do have many private schools from which to choose. In addition, in Washington, there is a history and expectation of student success for all students.

With such a low population of college degreed, how can the folks possibly understand the meaning of FAILURE? Until Hoosiers accept that evaluative process is necessary, accept the ruling of fact, nothing will change. I sent my kids away from this state for secondary education and for college as well. Nothing much offered here.

Do we need to remind folks that most of the residents in Meridian Kessler (Wash Twnshp) pay outrageous property taxes and also pay extra to send their kids to private school.
    .
Yesterday I took a long 3 mile walk with a friend and looked at all for sale information boxes along our route. You would not believe the number of homes paying in excess of $1000 per month in property tax.
    .
It is outrageous that these folks also have to pay extra to ensure their kids get a decent education and shot at life.

  • Jacob

Melyssa, the great thing is, they DON’T HAVE TO. They make a choice; hence, the push for school choice. Come on now.

  • pascal

Folks who think governments can operate schools competently need to take another look at CIB or basically, anything else the government runs. Socialism is the model for government schools and their performance is about what you could expect from Socialism except that we then allowed unions to ruin and an excessive beaucracy to govern. Were there any other causes to their death spiral?

  • SAHM

I willingly choose to pay tuition for my students. Bring in the Charter Schools, bring in the remediation team but you won’t be seeing any of my students in the public system ever again. Tried it and saw nothing to serve the higher end of the scale.

  • Jacob

Charter schools are about the low-middle end, not the low or high end. The high end already has choice. The low end doesn’t care.

I notice John Marshall school is missing from this list. Has Marshall “turned around” or because it converted from middle to high school it received a “do-over”?

Socialism, and its degradations / permutations (totalitarianism, fascism, communism, etc.), is a parasitic, punitively focused, hate based philosophy, sold on the fraudulent basis of counterfeit concern for the “common” man or person, within public & private sector bureacracies. To achieve its ends, socialism is tactically reliant on the domestication of intellect & human spirit; power or control over the people, vs. empowerment of the people (that Constitution “thing”). Socialism is a hate crime and must therefore be defeated. Here’s a today’s headline view, of socialist styled “education” from the LA Times:

    Hey Melyssa,
    Call me 317-440-3174
    I lost your number

  • Think Again

Melyssa, honey: Meridian Kessler is in Washington, but also inside the IPS school district. About 100 students from that area paid tuition to attend Washington Twp. schools last year.

If The above district comparison has anything over 40% passing for Warren and Wayne, someone is cheating.

This is the first in a series of many “final straws” for IPS. The water is swirling the bowl.

  • IPS solution

The problems in IPS will not end until Eugene White and his high paid buddies are evicted from the Education Center. All White does is spend money and more money but never does any followup to see it the program is working. Some of his high ranked administrators have been failures in their entire educational careers. Some have been fired from other districts and one has even been fired from IPS for scandalous behavior. They just reappear in high ranking positions with White.

  • Jacob

White is an easy and maybe, at times, appropriate scapegoat (for real and racial reasons). However, the problem is more historical and legislative than not. For the most part, IPS problems now are the same as CIB problems now.

  • http://www.hoosiersforfairtaxation.com Melyssa

Think again…I also know some kids who live in Carmel that pay tuition to go to North Central.
    .
If you live in the IPS part of MKNA, you are screwed when it comes to schools.

  • Greg P

Melyssa, if what you say is true, why are there 2 IPS in or near MKNA with waiting lists of over 100 students to enroll. I will agree that IPS has some really bad schools but there are some good ones and good ones near you. Take you blinders off!!

Go and read this column from David Brooks. We can/should do this here — http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/08/opinion/08brooks.html

  • Baduizm

Whis ForestManor, a school that closed more than a yearago, on the state’s list of schools of four-year probation?
