Program Note

FYI,

Indianapolis Public School Superintendent Dr. Eugene White will be a guest tomorrow on my morning radio show.  He’s scheduled to appear tomorrow from 7-8 a.m.  You can hear the interview at 1430 AM or over the Internet at www.wxnt.com.  We’ll talk about the 2008 State of the District report, budget cuts, ISTEP test scores, charter schools, discipline issues and whatever else comes to mind.  I hope you’ll join us.

It would be nice if you were able to sound out the Title I “problem” you’ve been hinting at.
    .
Also, maybe something about justifying so many administrators per pupil considering how tight budgets are supposed to be.
    .
Some “vision” questions about how Superintendent White plans to “fix” IPS might prove interesting.
    .
I certainly hope that I am able to listen at that time tomorrow.

I heard the news reports about budget cuts in Hamilton county schools and that they laid off teachers.
    .
Then they bragged that the educrat administrators were forgoing salary increases that would save a whopping $166k collectively
    .
Why didn’t I hear anything about administrator educrats getting laid off? They are the people that need to go. We need to keep our teachers.

We need only to keep good teachers and administrators like the persecuted leader of John Marshall. Perhaps your guest bozo will address the implosion of that school at his hands(Dr. White’s)and the very substantial fall off in academic performance as measured by test scores that has occured at that school. Note that “teachers” last math of any rigor probably occured in grade school and that most elementary education majors have laughable SAT scores so the problem of having good “teachers” is complicated by the fact that for the most part their academic achievements are minimal.

    Melyssa-
When was the last time you were in a public school building? Laying off administrators, especially building level administrators, leads to more discipline problems in classrooms, lower teacher morale, higher teacher turnover, decreased test scores, etc., etc. Think before you type about laying off “educrats”…

  • Shorebreak

    Question for Mr. White:
    .
When IPS receives federal funding, what kinds of requirements must IPS commit to in order to receive the funds? Can you please tell the audience where the public can view these funding packages, along with their specific terms and conditions.

  • the_weasel

I do believe there are way too many admins or “educrats.” We all need to evaluate how they have a direct influence on teacher morale, ISEP scores, academic performance, and discipline. All are at the bottom — enough said.

Maybe all of White’s salary be based upon performance.

  • Think Again

Shore: most all federal grants channel through the State Dept. of Education. They’re federal Title programs, for everything form Special Ed to Remediation. The receiving district’s “espected” federal grant haul, must be included in every year’s budget, so the state can adjust for the equlization formula. That budget is pput together beginning now through June, so it can be published in July, acted upon in Aug-Sept., and approved by the state later in the fall. So you see: you’ve got to accurately predict p[retty far in advance, or you’re, well…screwed.

And, schools operate on a calendar year budget, but a calendar year impacts two school years. It ain’t easy.

The requirements for those grants are contained in each grant proposal. Generally, it’s: adhere to federal law and the intent of the program.

pp: I hope Melyssa meant central-office administrators. I agree with you that building-level administrators have to be maintained, to preserve the time to deal with discipline and normal school-function issues.

But I’ve been in many central offices. Horribly over-staffed at the upper levels. Dr. White loves high-paid assistant superintendents/directors with wide-ranging portfolios and fuzzy accountability.

It takes a very persistent and intellegent board to stay one step ahead of his floating promises and accountability charts.

Half of them could go, shove the workload down to a clerical level, and you’d never know the difference.

Ask him if he is still going to screw the taxpayer with the bond issue excess under the circumstance of declining enrollment, school closures. etc.

I am listening to the interview now and this is trivial, but if this dude says “skoo” (school) one more time….. :)

  • Robert-NW Side

I listened to the interview with Gene White. He is marginally more coherent than Olgen Williams.

It’s difficult to believe that White has a Doctorate. He doesn’t make my head explode like Williams does, but listening to ‘Doctor’ White speak does give me a headache.
