Suicide or Rebirth?

In a room full of more Libertarians than media, At-large City-County Councilor Ed Coleman today officially cast aside his Republican label for a Libertarian one.

Coleman says he left the GOP because the “party had changed” and was not “the same party he joined years ago.”  He also said the current Republican-controlled Council abuses its power and he also took shots at the Capital Improvement Board, which he says is not transparent and operates in secret.  He also plans to ask Municipal Committee Chairman Mike McQuillen to subpoena the CIB and explain its finances before the Council.

Coleman did not say if thought he would lose his committee assignments because of the party switch, but did say he is still the same person he was when he was assigned to Rules and Economic Development.  He also said he received little financial support from the party so he won’t have to return any funds now that he’s switched over.

Coleman also said that he can still be effective on the Council even though he is the lone Libertarian because he will always do what is in the best interest of the citizens.

It seems the GOP was pushing him aside anyway, so I take it more as a reading of the writing on the wall than political suicide. If your party fails to endorse your original campaign, indicates it will run someone against you (as much as that kind of targeting of an at-large seat can happen inside a primary), then leaving becomes a pretty easy decision, because you’re isolated already.

It will be interesting to see how the R caucus and D caucus treat Coleman. I’m betting the D’s lobby for his vote more strenuously than the R’s.

Indy Star is $2.6 million invested in business controlled by the CIB. There’s a reason why, after months of inquiries, Ed made no progress to open records of the CIB.
    .
Where is our Mayor right now? No statement from him either. I remember that Mayor Ballard had plenty to say about this monkey business before he was elected.
    .
Thanks Abdul for reporting the press conference to us and for showing up. You’re doing what every good journalist in this town should be doing right now. You also asked great questions too.

I wonder why the dems never bailed on their party when Gray and company were taking abuse to never-before-seen levels. Gotta love them repubs who eat their own!

I don’t care if it’s writing “already on the wall”, opportunism, or sincerity. Anybody that’s not happy with a taxpayer-funded board that wants $43M in one hand without handing over all public records with the other is Ok in my book.
    .
I donated money and voted for Mayor Ballard. I like what he’s done in law enforcement, the budget process, and starting-out as a political outsider. But, a cumulative turn of events have brought this to a head, kind of like the tail-end of Peterson’s tenure. The Mayor needs to make sure he’s doing what’s best for Indianapolis, given what taxpayers can afford. I enjoy the sports teams, but I think residents are more impressed by a city that can graduate kids, pay bills, and be safe, versus grown men playing with balls.
    .
I suggest the basics first. That doesn’t mean pay for this problem with state tax dollars, either.

Echoing ‘Taxpayer’… I have to respect the man for not just following the party line when he knows it’s wrong. Back in the 50’s a popular expression was “Better dead than red.”

Too many politicians seem to act like an unthinking carbon unit that merely follows whatever their fearless leader says.

Ed will be a one term-er. He needed the Republican party to get re-elected.
He will be the last Libertarian on the CCC for years to come.
Ed had more power as an R then he will ever have as an L.
I’m sorry to hear that he switched , he is done in Indy politics.

  • seen it coming

I seen this coming long ago. I remember Ed a few years ago when I was at a polling site getting ready to vote.

I was talking to some firefighters outside and he was bashing them and stating all kinds of horrible things about who they supported and about them. Then I watched I seen the candidate pull up that the firefighters were supporting and Ed walked up to him and asked him for assistance as he was planning to run for CCC. A man with with two faces.

I seen this coming after watching that incident. I am not stating I don’t agree with his concerns with the CIB.
