Can We Talk?

If you are African-American and read this blog on a regular basis, we need to talk.  If you’re white and reading this, just hang out for a moment.

Like you, I’m still amazed at the events of this week and the swearing-in of Barack Obama as President.  As I watched I thought of my deceased grandfather whose right to vote wasn’t codified into law until half his life was over and my eight-year old niece whose first real memory of a President will be someone who looks like her.   With Obama’s election, I argue a great barrier has fallen and race is no longer a deal breaker for African-American empowerment.

Now with that said, with great empowerment comes great accountability.  So the fact that Thursday’s four bus stop robberies of Kipp Charter school students are the latest example of black-on-black crime is ridiculous to no end!  It is high time that black communities have said enough to predatory behavior.  And while the residents of the Kipp Charter neighborhood are outraged and are saying enough is enough, there are too many black neighborhoods across this country where residents tolerate too much predatory behavior and the local power structure would spend more time chastising the police officer who had to use more force than usual to subdue a criminal rather than the criminal who who preyed on the community.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news folks, but in this age of hope and opportunity, you’re going to have realize that some people are just no damn good and will have to be written off.  Exactly how we write them off, I’m not totally sure yet but I’ll come up with something.  But a 16-year old standing on the corner waiting for a school bus should not have to worry about being robbed at gun-point for $2 in lunch money.

Ask any crime statistician and they will tell you that most of the crimes are committed by the same people. It’s time to take those same people and politely, or not so politely, put them away, for good.

  • KC

Too often individuals in the both the white and black communities want all criminals arrested and prosecuted for the crimes they commit accept the ones in their own families. How many of these families subsidize the family income with profits from illegal drug sales, shoplifting, embezzeled cash, and other crimes to support themselves? No way will they turn them in.

  • Daw-g

Abdul. The inauguration was days ago. I recognize and respect Obama’s accomplishment. However my amazement and wonder ended when he was swore in. He’s the President of the United States now. His supporters and acolytes told us race was never a factor prior to winning the election. Well it sure as hell isn’t a factor now. Geeeze…you’d think Jesus Himself just came down and got sworn in!
    .
Regarding the new age of accountability? There are some people out there who give less than a darn about Obama’s accomplishments and what it represented. You think they’re going to stop robbing and preying on fellow Blacks?
    .
You’re right we’re going to have to find a way to let go of the vermin who do the things we do. Like Adolph Caesar said in the movie “A Soldier’s Story” when he mistakenly locked up a fellow Black he thought was vermin “You see, the Black just can’t afford you no more.”
    .
Now, allow me to play devil’s advocate here for a moment. Prior to this president being elected do you think Whites decided it was time to cut loose of their PWT, issue a challenge to their serial killers, and tell their child abusers to stop? Why should we be any different?

  • Anji

We have to get rid of that hood fab mentality! I’m sorry, but every time I see a little 4 year old boy with braided up hair, baggy jeans falling off of him, Timbos and a too big RocaWear puffy coat, I see a potential problem in the making. And if his momma is popping off at the mouth while waiting in line at the store, you can bank on it. Ghetto is not cute, people!!! I’m not saying we all need to be Carlton Banks, but dang, is there not a happy medium???

  • Shorebreak

The problems facing the black community aren’t confined to the black community. Here’s why: As long as we continue to self-segregate and define white’s and blacks as separate communities, we’ll continue to have different expectations and we’ll look upon actions within a race as distinctive of that race, when they’re not. White on white crime is just as devastating. The difference is that nobody’s telling the overall white community that their neighborhoods and their ethics suck when Bubba robs Sam and Pete.
    .
Let me ask a question: what makes black on black crime any different that white on black, or vice versa? My conscious, my faith, my ethics, my upbringing, and my Constitution tell me that we’re all equal. Problems that are confined to the black community are confined to the black community for one reason: Perception. We’re taught that we’re different. As a result, we self-segregate. It’s not based upon reality, it’s based upon conditioning. In reality, we are all equal. Unfortunately, we won’t see it lived until each individual makes a conscious choice to walk away from their conditioning and to stop self-segragating.
    .
And this is much bigger than neighborhoods and school districts. You can be black and live among blacks without self-segrating. This isn’t about geography – it’s perception and conditioning. Perception is always reality for the person who is experiencing it. The problem cannot be corrected until we recognize it and make necessary changes as individuals. You can’t cure a lawn problem by treating the grass blades. You need to treat the soil that feeds the root.

  • Silent Bob

Abdul: I don’t recall seeing you on tv during any of the anti-crime rallies, or perhaps helping to patrol school bus stops.. or being at City-County Council meetings to discuss crime..or..or..or…….

  • Anji

Silent Bob – I’m not trying to be disrespectful, seriously, but why does Abdul have to go to meetings, rallies, etc. just because he wants the black community to get their ish together? Abdul does his part by being a responsible, law-abiding, successful black man and I am quite sure he makes an impact on the brothers he teaches in his classes.

The out-of-towner, last in the ratings radio talk show host is spouting off again this morning about something he knows nothing about

  • Jack

First–if important I am white, middle class, and do not live in Indy but in a small town several miles removed from Indy. Agree with theme of this posting and several of the replies. As long as the “gangsta” image is used by Idols of the young, as long as parents tolerate dress and behavior of their children that reflects the “ganstra” image, and as long as communities out of lack of concern or fear allow the bad element to dominate—we all have problems regardless of race or where we live. Truthfully I am very uncomfortable even visiting Indy —no matter the person’s race–there is simply a concern for safety and little comfort of anyplace not in the main stream locations. There is no possible way police can handle the concerns as there is simply too much going on–too many who feel they can prey on others. I salute the minister trying to address the issues—but reality says prayer may not get the job done—good book indicates action is necessary and “god helps them who help themselves”. Believe this is going to take some very harsh actions to reduce concerns–like said–not sure even what will work but need to convince both those involved and those that might become involved–criminal acts bring serious trouble for the doer.

  • Daw-g

Anji…what is a timbo? Your post is accurate, hillarious, but accurate! lol

  • Anji

Daw-g – sorry about that. Guess I got a little too comfortable in posting. :) I was referring to Timberland boots.

  • http://indianabarrister.com Abdul

    Pascal,

You’re absolutely right. I know nothing about being a menace to my own community by sticking up teenagers at bus stops.

    Abdul

  • Jon G

Shorebreak, your post is exactly right. Just what I would say if I were as articulate as you.

  • Taxpayer 834512

Amen. With due respect to “hanging-out” on this one, I think of ‘Deep Space Nine’. Some tolerance for cultural differences on the holideck, but basically one set of laws for the occupants regardless of race, planet, rank, role, sex, etc., or so my recollection.

  • Daw-g

shorebreak: The problems facing the Black community are confined to it in the sense they are way disproportionate to the rest of the population: Crime, dependency, family disintegration, incarceration, abortion, eduction, etc.
    .
And speaking of self-segregation, the libs are proven masters in that. Look at how they attempted to draft “hate crime” legislation. Such laws define people by gender, race, sexuality, etc and put them into nice little boxes. The hate crime laws says if you commit a crime against someone not in your box then it is somehow worse than committing the same crime against someone within your own box.

  • Shorebreak

Daw-g – I understand what you’re saying, but you’re exemplifying the disconnect that I’m talking about. Bear with me. This is where your perception becomes your reality.
    .
Perception to you states that the black community is separate from the white community, and that the proportion of negative issues facing blacks is disproportionate with the negative issues facing whites. That is how we’ve been trained to look at things.
    .
On the other hand, let’s assume that our training has taught us to look at social problems through the lens of income level and education, rather than through skin color. I’m willing to speculate that if you looked at 100% of low-income whites with poor education, and 100% of low-income blacks with poor education, you’d find a similar percentage of social issues within that subset.
    .
The reason that the black community sees these problems differntly than whites is more than likely because there’s a much larger percentage of low-income/poor education blacks than there are whites. I hope that you’re following me. It’s perception that’s driving our opinions, not race. And perception is reality – whether it’s true or not.
    .
My ultimate point is that if we can’t understand how and why we are in our current circumstance – if we can’t identify where the soil has failed – we can’t fix the root which produces the visible product. If we continue to look at socio-economic problems from a racial perspective ratrher than from a socio-economic perspective, we continue to self-segregate. Regardless of our intent.

  • Rico

No, Abdul, but you supported a race pimp as prez.

  • Shorebreak

For all of those who are expecting change, it looks like we’re starting with 20,000 more Marines for Afghanistan. If you’ve been paying attention to my posts, you know why I’m reporting this. Obama is beginning to show his agenda already. Get ready for much, much more.
    http://www.iht.com/articles/reuters/2009/01/23/africa/OUKWD-UK-USA-AFGHAN-MARINES.php

  • Rico

I guess our economic crisis isn’t too severe to fund abortions around the world. Our scumbag, baby-killing president just signed the order.

  • Shorebreak

Rico – as much as I abhor abortion, I always keep this in mind: The GOP/Dem party uses abortion as a tool to maintain an ideological separation, in order to portray themselves as two distinct entities. Did Bush ever try to eliminate Roe v. Wade? Absolutely not. The media panted him as pro-life, but his appointment to the Whitehouse resulted in 100’s of thousands of dead bodies. The culture of death knows no party lines.
    .
Abortion is a smoke screen. The media will get everyone worked up about it, and in the meantime, the Obama agenda to escalate the war to continue in Bush’s footsteps and to establish geostratigic control of Central Asia has just ramped up. US missile attacks on Pakistan occured today, in addition to an announcement to begin the escalation with 20,000 troops.
    .
The only thing that’s really changed is the pattern of deception. They’re just pushing different buttons in order to portray Obama differently than Bush.

  • Daw-g

Shorebreak: While I respect what you’re saying, there is no perception in the disproportionate levels of Black folks with regards to crime, education, etc. A good look at the FBI uniform crime report will show so much. A good luck at any education report will show how too many Blacks are lagging behind.

  • Daw-g

    >Our scumbag, baby-killing president just signed the order.
    .
Rico, at least the planned parenthood nurse that got fired for promoting an abortion to an underage girl can now find work overseas.
    .
Look at the bright side of things!

  • Greg

Rico, why the attack. Stay with the issues. Our new President may be a lot of things, but I doubt he is a scumbag. I did not vote for him, but I hope he can lead us to the middle on lots of issues.

Shorebreak, I only need to look at the numbers regarding black on black crime (just look at the murders) vs. white on white to determine that there are more than social and economic issues at work here. I am not smart enough to know what they are, but would think that improved self respect might go a long way to resolve some of this.

  • Rico

Save the bullshit, Shorebreak, about Bush and Obama being from the same cloth. One is pro-life, and one is pro-infanticide. One nominates pro-constitution, pro-life justices to the highest court in the land, the other thinks it’s okay to kill a baby who survives an abortion. Your ‘corporate cabal’ crap doesn’t apply here. You may think the whole world is out to get you. Maybe they are. Finding no difference(with regard to abortion) between the two is a a copout for someone of your intelligence. Character is about doing what’s right when nobody’s watching. Obama very quietly signed an order, which has been in place for 20 years, to allow our tax dollars to support abort internationally. He’s a scumbag. That, I will not retract. We all reap what we sow and this country is in for it for electing this amoral, Godless man.

  • Rico

By the way, Abdul, I would appreciate it if you would refer to me as European-American in the future. My natural grandparents were born in Ireland. Okay? Thanks.

  • Silent Bob

Dear Anji: The “brothers” Abdul teaches in his class probably don’t rob school children. I don’t think Abdul has the courage to engage others than his bloggers or students. Sorry Abdul. I do however enjoy the freedom to blog and express my opinion. Stay loose.

  • Think Again

Rico, if you don’t have a legal education, which is evident, I’d refrain from putting “pro-life” and “pro-Constitution” in the same sentence. For any questions, refer to Roe v. Wade, SCOTUS webpage, or multiple other legal sites.

And any inference that “character” does not reside in pro-choice folks is, well, ignorant. And blatantly wrong.

And you really oughta review the “EO” Obama signed regarding family planning overseas. There evidently is no such animal. Here from the official website is a listing of all EOs signed by Obama thus far:
    http://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing_room/executive_orders/

If you have other information regarding the rightwing conspiracy EO you mention, please provide a direct link to the alleged text of the alleged EO. When and if you find that exact data, let us know.

If he did sign such an order, I’d be in favor of it, as would most Americans. But it doesn’t look like he did.

It’s gonna be a long eight years if you keep it up at this pace, Rico. Try to relax.

  • Rico

In the first place, Roe v Wade found that a person has a ‘right to privacy’, which is found nowhere in the constitution. Even pro-choice legal scholars believe that Roe v Wade was poorly written, and bad law.
Refer to the due process clause where it is written that no person shall deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process. Now, smart ass, where is due process applied when a baby who survives an abortion should be allowed to die,as our baby-killing president thinks should be the case. You, like Barry, don’t give a damn about our constitution if it stands in the way of your radical agendas. You view the courts as means to further them. Legislative process be damned!
I’ve taken constitutional law courses, along with many other law courses. No, I’m not a scumbag attorney like our president(or like Clinton, for that matter), but would debate you anytime, any place on any issue on which we disagree.
By the way, your messiah won’t win another term once idol-worshiping idiots like yourself wake up and see the him as the empty suit he is.

Obama lifts restrictions on abortion funding 24 Jan 2009 00:57:01 GMT
    Source: Reuters
    (Adds statement from Obama, details)

By Jeff Mason and Deborah Charles

WASHINGTON, Jan 23 (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Friday lifted restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, reversing a policy of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush.

  • Think Again

Rico, I did finish a legal education, and a few correspondence courses won’t help you out here. I did your homework. The President rescinded the “Mexico City” policy, but not under an EO. Here’s the link:

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/statement-released-after-the-president-rescinds/

And you might want to re-read the Constitution. Here is the interpretation of privacy protection, provided by the Library of Congress:

“…The Constitution does not specifically mention a right to privacy. However, Supreme Court decisions over the years have established that the right to privacy is a basic human right, and as such is protected by virtue of the 9th Amendment. The right to privacy has come to the public’s attention via several controversial Supreme Court rulings, including several dealing with contraception (the Griswold and Eisenstadt cases), interracial marriage (the Loving case), and abortion (the well-known Roe v Wade case). In addition, it is said that a right to privacy is inherent in many of the amendments in the Bill of Rights, such as the 3rd, the 4th’s search and seizure limits, and the 5th’s self-incrimination limit.”

And thre you have it. You really need to get on decaf, ya know?

  • John Doe

“Ask any crime statistician and they will tell you that most of the crimes are committed by the same people. It’s time to take those same people and politely, or not so politely, put them away, for good.”

Sorry, not enough money to build prisons. Well, I should say not enough money to build prisons that would be legal under US law. Other industrialized nations can have $#!t prisons, why can’t we? Also, we have to bailout millionaires and layabouts and bums, so there is no money for prisons.

My prediction is that since the welfare class seems to be growing, while the producing class seems to be shrinking (can only afford two kids on a middle class income, if that), people had best just arm themselves and make their home/castle more secure.

  • Rico

I’ve never taken a correspondence course, Think Again. My degree is in business, but took(and excelled in) many law courses. Just because you’re adept at surfing the web and cutting and pasting does not make you a legal scholar. Roe v Wade is bad law that did not take the unborn’s bio father into accunt at all. For a self-loathing feminist like yourself, that may be just fine. It doesn’t really cry out ‘equal protection’, does it? Reading the interpretation of Roe v Wade by the Library of Congress really doesn’t make your point, counselor. It’s bad law decided by ideologues on the bench who felt it was their place to legislate from the bench–pretty much the same way Affirmative Action or bussing became the law of the land. Not a fan of our representative republic, are ya?

  • KC

Crime begins in high places and trickles down.
The American mainstream media has successfully programmed Americans to think in terms of colors black and white, red and yellow; and not as humans. European Americans or Caucasians are not white, African Americans or Negroes are not black, Asian Americans or Mongolians are not yellow, Native Americans or Indians are not red. As long as the media refers to members of the human race as a color, racism will be promoted.

Crime is crime no matter who commits it and criminals regardless of race should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law in our courts. However, we know a double-standard exist in the criminal justice system. The “have-nots” are punished, sent to prison and made examples of, while the “haves” receive a slap on the wrist and sent home to their lavish lifestyles.

WILL THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT PUNISH OBAMA LIKE IT DID SENATOR STEVENS?
The Bush Justice Department won a conviction against Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (R) yesterday on seven counts of hiding nearly $250,000 in free home renovations and other gifts from a wealthy oil contractor. Stevens’ indictment and conviction in the middle of his re-election bid ensures his defeat. Democrats are celebrating Stevens’ conviction, hopeful now of capturing 60 Senate seats in this year’s election. Ironically, Democrats have been accusing the Bush administration for the past 8 years of engaging in political prosecutions of Democrats. Let’s see, the Justice Department prosecuted Vice Presidential Chief of Staff Scooter Libby, GOP powerhouse lobbyist Jack Abramoff, U.S. Rep. Randy Cunningham, U.S. Robert Ney and U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi. It is currently investigating at least a half dozen other GOP members of Congress. So, what about Sen. Barack Obama? After all, his convicted political fixer friend, Tony Rezko, put about $300,000 in his pocket to help him and his wife, Michelle, purchase their South Side mansion. After hearing rumors that Rezko was helping funnel cash to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagoyevich to help with remodeling work on his home, Sen. Obama called on his good buddy Rezko for help. It seemed a co-worker of Michelle’s at the University of Chicago hospital had this beautiful Hyde Park home, but they insisted the buyer purchase the vacant lot next door. Obama couldn’t swing the more than $2 million the sellers wanted. So Obama takes Rezko over to the house for a walk through and Rezko comes up with a plan. He had his wife, Rita, purchase the vacant lot at an inflated price of $650,000. If you don’t believe me on that, just ask the bank appraiser who lost his job and has filed a whistle blower lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court accusing Mutual Bank of tossing his lower appraisal in favor of the inflated appraisal and withholding that information from a federal grand jury looking into the transaction. At the same time, the sellers knocked off $300,000 from the selling price of the home for the Obamas, who received a discounted jumbo mortgage to purchase the home for $1.6 million. Later, Rezko improved the lot with a privacy fence and sold a portion of the lot to the Obamas, thereby rendering the balance of the lot worth significantly less than the original purchase price on it. You can shake that up in a brown paper bag however you like, but when you open it up, it is still a shady land deal designed to personally enrich the Obamas.
Where’s the Justice Department? Let’s see an indictment of Obama now so the voters will know that Obama is just a typical Chicago politician on the take. This deal is no different than the set of transactions for which you just prosecuted Sen. Stevens. If it’s fair to indict and convict Stevens in the middle of his re-election, then it’s fair to indict Obama.

  • Jerry

The party is over, time for the truth! All that glitters is not gold! Where is the vaulted copy of Barry Soetoro aka Barack Hussein Obama, II’s birth certificate? Who altered his birth certificate, original passport and draft records? Why is his college records at Occidental, Columbia and Harvard sealed? Howard Dean, the Democrat National Committee, Mainstream Media and ACORN successfully scammed America.
Three people with standing Biden, Clinton, and Richardson. Each lost to Obama in Democrat Primaries. However, Richardson was being investigated and had to fall by the wayside. Could it be that he refused to go along with the program?
Joe Biden, vice president, Biden’s son, AG of Delaware arrested Larry Sinclair during his press conference in D.C., jailed him until after the National Convention and released him with no charges filed. Hillary Clinton at the State Department can complete the cover up since she raised Obama’s birth certificate issue first during the Primary, but later dropped it. Behind the scenes, did she bump off Caroline Kennedy for the senate seat since she supported Obama? Gov. Blago and Rezko of Chicago corrupt political circles will expose the real Obama. This scandal will be bigger than Watergate!

  • Jerry

Hey “Jerry” – don’t make me look bad by using my name.

  • KC

I told you people to do your homework!

So, it’s official, America has a black president. But is he the first? Or the fifth?
Or even the sixth, if you count Dwight D. Eisenhower?
(You drinking again, Strobel? Better get your Obamania shots. Or Obamamania, or whatever.)
No, seriously, stories keep popping up about the lineage of some U.S. presidents. Books have been written.
Are you sitting down? Honest Abe is on the “black” list.
(Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?)
The Great Emancipator’s grandma, it is long rumoured, was Ethiopian. Holy Selassie! Hit it, Abe:
You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
Who says Lincoln was part black? A few historians, and Lincoln’s political rivals of the day, playing on his dark skin and curly hair.
One of them ran a cartoon of Abraham Africanus the First.
But Lincoln, some say, was actually the third president of mixed blood.
Thomas Jefferson was first. We know the Man of the People fathered kids with slave Sally Hemings.
But in 1796 a rival thundered that Jefferson had his own mixed past — black, white and native.
Amazing, eh, how deeply race is rooted in American politics.
Andrew Jackson was a “black” president. Calvin Coolidge. Again, mostly according to rivals and rumour mongers.
But Warren Harding is a surer bet. He had at least one black great-grandmother.
This never became a campaign issue. Harding had an even more scandalous quality. He was a newspaperman.
In 2005, Marsha Stewart, a black Detroit schoolteacher, published a book about her cousin Warren.
She wrote: “While growing up, we were never allowed to talk about the relationship to a U.S. president outside family gatherings because we were ‘coloured’ and Warren was ‘passing.’ ”
Eisenhower is latest on the “black” list, in a 1993 book by a Dr. Auset Bakhufu. You have to go way back on Ike’s mother’s side.
Last February, scholar Russell Riley told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: “I don’t think it would be terribly surprising to find that a president did have some blood of African descent. Particularly in the South, where there tended to be so much closeness between black and white.”
Bill Clinton is not on the list, despite what New Yorker magazine said of him in 1998: “White skin notwithstanding, this is our first black president. Blacker than any actual black person who could ever be elected in our children’s lifetime.”
The writer cited Slick Willy’s skill on saxophone. She was being satirical. But her last sentence is ironic, eh?
I learned a few things watching yesterday’s “moment that will define a generation:”
    - Even a cool cucumber like Obama can recite an oath of 35 words and screw up 20 of them.
    Ahh, memories of George.
But Obama’s mantle of infallibility is such that everyone blames the chief justice.
    - Blame a speechwriter for Obama calling himself the 44th American to take the oath.
There have been just 43 presidents. Grover Cleveland served two separate terms in the 1800s. So there.
    - Wow. Aretha Franklin’s chops may be aging, but she’s still the Queen of Soul.
    - Not a good day for the bulls and goats of Kenya. Celebratory feasts were held across the homeland of Obama’s dad.
    - Man, you know Obama is a big deal when even ESPN carries the inauguration live. Sports is life, I guess.
    - I would not want to be in Obama’s shoes. Royal weddings can’t match those crowds. And no man since Sid the Kid has carried such impossible expectations on his shoulders.
The world hopes he’s up to it.
Oh, and I notice he’s left-handed. I had no idea. So that’s the big deal.
He’s the first left-handed black president.
