NW Times Picks Daniels For Governor

This cannot be good news for the Jill Long Thompson campaign.

The NW Times of  Indiana has endorsed Mitch Daniels for Governor over JLT.  While I never think newspaper endorsements do much to move voters, it does show something when the premiere paper in an area where JLT should do well and Daniels not so well  chooses the latter over the former.

Here are some excerpts.

Each has experience at the federal level, Thompson as a former congresswoman and Daniels as a former director of the Office of Management and Budget.

What separates them most is that Daniels has detailed plans and ideas without adding taxes, while Thompson has plans that lack specifics, including how she would pay for her generalist ideas.

Thompson, always on the attack, has tried to link Daniels to President Bush and the national budget deficit, but Daniels is no longer the president’s budget director. In fact, as governor, Daniels has pulled Indiana out of the red ink left by his predecessors and placed the state solidly in the black.

Here’s another on the lease of the Toll Road…

A key issue that Thompson has attacked Daniels over time and again is the long-term lease of the Indiana Toll Road for $3.8 billion. She is wrong, for the facts are on Daniels side. That lease, the centerpiece of Daniels’ Major Moves transportation initiative, generates more interest on the state’s invested money in just one year than the previous 50 years of tolls collected under the state’s operation.

Thompson says a new analysis she spawned shows the road was worth more than $11 billion over that time if the state would have increased tolls it charged.

In other words, she would have passed along a quasi tax increase.

Here’s what they said on jobs…

For economic development, Thompson proposes a complicated three-tier system for counties that would move away from tax incentives and reward companies for such things as hiring at least five new employees, providing half the cost of premiums for group health insurance and making other investments. But she provides no specifics.

Daniels helped create the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority to leverage economic development money to get more bang for our tax dollars. It is already helping attract jobs to the region and holds great promise for future job growth. And while it has helped bring jobs to the region, the program is being guided by local people.

Thompson hammers Daniels over the state’s rate of job losses, yet the fact is that Indiana’s unemployment rate is less than any of its neighbors and the state has been recognized nationally for its business climate. This during a time of economic crisis in the nation.

Here’s the bottom line…

In all three gubernatorial debates this fall, Horning proved the comedian and Thompson the vicious attack dog — neither of which Indiana needs for a governor. Daniels has been the sole voice of sanity and reason, offering solid ideas with the details showing they can work.

The bottom line is that Daniels has proven himself to be an out-of-the-box thinker who gets good things done for the people of Indiana. He was honored this year by Governing Magazine for his accomplishments and for being a strong state leader.

Like I said, newspaper endorsements don’t move voters, but they can certainly catch attention at times.

Editor’s note: A number of my friends in the newspaper business reminded me that the NW Times is a right-leaning newspaper.  In that light, I also promise to post the endorsement of the Gary Post Tribune.

As a past resident of Da Region and just recently there I can assure you Mitch is talked about quite often and they were not talking endorsement. lol

    Peace

  • Think Again

Big Dawg has it about right.

The NW Times is not known as a Democratic newspaper, Abdul. Although this endorsement is important, and it is not good news for JLT, it isn’t entirely unexpected.

  • Think Again

Just took the time to read the endorsement, and The Star’s from today.

Honestly, they’re hard to argue with. Dammit.

  • Jerry

Well if they’re both hard to argue with, why say damnit? Why not let the best man (Daniels) win? Or do you want the best woman to win only when she isn’t better looking than you? zing, yes, be here all week.

Old habits are hard to break. I appreciate ritual and customs more with age. It’s still tough to watch Texas beat Oklahoma in football. But, I do not understand allegiance to a party versus a candidate. Sticking with your religion through good and bad, maybe. Many people do. Most, maybe all religion requires a leap of faith to begin with. But, steadfast loyalty to either Republicans or Democrats in America? Why? How? They’re certainly not philosophically what they were. You like one of them because of their present political philosophy? Or, you like party X just because it’s not party Y, which is worse? Judging on the merits of individual candidates, I concur. Making a judgement about an issue in the past with a sweeping generalization regarding party- you better have your facts lined-up. Judging someone soley based on party affiliation? Seems nuts to me in America. Is it or is it not obvious that both have sold us down the river, and we have to look at individual merit? In grand bipartisan fashion, when our economy might have been close to an abyss (who knows for certain) from wreckless banking and finance, neither of our Presidential candidates told us the the “bailout bill” was FILLED WITH PORK. Exactly what we DIDN’T and DON’T need, as WE’RE ALREADY BILLIONS AND TRILLIONS IN HOCK! I have more respect for an AIDS-stricken prostitute, still working the streets. These guys could go get a REAL job if they had to. Why the hell should we respect either one of their God-forsaken parties?

“In all three gubernatorial debates this fall, Horning proved the comedian and Thompson the vicious attack dog — neither of which Indiana needs for a governor. Daniels has been the sole voice of sanity and reason, offering solid ideas with the details showing they can work.”
    -
Horning was the comedian? As I recall, HORNING was the ONLY candidate that advocating our Constitution.
    -
Horing actually advocates that government stay within the bounds of the language, spirit and intent of our Constitution.
    -
Yet, he is labeled a ‘comedian’ for this?!?!
    -
We are indeed in bad shape.
    -
I noticed that JLT tried to tie just about everything to ‘national defense’. By doing so, she would justify federal ‘jurisdiction’. This is how THEY must try, since the US Supreme Court ruled that there is no ‘interstate commerce’ in education (see Lopez v US, 1995).
    -
Jurisdiction, folks! JLT would try to make EVERYTHING fall within federal jurisdiction, and “States’ rights” be damned!!
    -
Oh, by the way…when is the last time anyone heard our Governor speak about honoring his oath to our Indiana Constitution, and actually follow up with ACTION, and not mere words?
    -
How about the debt cap contained within our Constitution? Does government respect that cap? NOPE! Government finds ways around the limiting language, spirit and intent of Article 13.
    http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/const/art13.html
    -
Section 1. No political or municipal corporation in this State shall ever become indebted, in any manner or for any purpose to an amount, in the aggregate, exceeding two per centum on the value of the taxable property within such corporation, to be ascertained by the last assessment for State and county taxes, previous to the incurring of such indebtedness; and all bonds or obligations, in excess of such amount, given by such corporations, shall be void: Provided, That in time of war, foreign invasion, or other great public calamity, on petition of a majority of the property owners in number and value, within the limits of such corporation, the public authorities, in their discretion, may incur obligations necessary for the public protection and defense to such amount as may be requested in such petition.
    -
Never mind that the ‘intent’ of this language was to limit ALL debt to “two per centum on the value of the taxable property within such corporation”.
    -
No. See, we have “school cities” too. THEY are allowed two per centum also.
    -
Bell v. School City of Gary, Indiana, U.S. 7th Circuit, 31 Oct 1963. “By the terms of 28-1902, Burns Indiana Statutes, the City of Gary is declared to be a school corporation for school purposes, ‘* * * and shall be known and designated as ‘School City of (Gary) Indiana.” Where the term ‘defendant’ is used in this opinion, reference is to School City of Gary, Indiana”
    -
This occurs throughout Indiana. The City of Gary has its 2 percent debt limit, the ‘School City of Gary’ has ITS 2 percent limit. Other ‘corporations’ can have THEIR 2 percent limit. When does it stop?!?! Certainly, let’s not forget our wonderful Economic Development CORPORATIONS, and THEIR debt limits. Further reading on this:

    -
I really don’t believe that the Delegates who drafted the language in Article 13, nor the voters who RATIFIED that language, expected their will to be usurped and circumvented by government fiat.
    -
    2-4-6-8, who do we appreciate?
    -
    Not government!

It’s a testimony to his even keel that Horning can be a Constitutional expert, yet maintain a sense of humor. Despite Daniels’ relative frugality, Horning is the best choice if you think Constitutions are more than old documents you have to figure how to work around.

Taxpayer 8….. I couldn’t agree with you more, can someone say ‘free thinker.’ As far as the pork in the bail out bill it is a true testiment to how ‘our representitives’ truly care about us and our nation. Pretty pathetic.
