Anderson Cuts $19 Million From Budget Request

Saying he wanted to “trim the fat and cut to the bone,”  Marion County Sheriff Frank Anderson tonight submitted a new budget request to the City-County Council, $19 million smaller than his original.

Anderson’s original budget request was more than $111 million.  The most recent was nearly $93 million.  While still $7 million more than what the mayor’s office had budgeted, $85 million, it is still only slightly larger than last year’s total request, $91 million.

Part of the reason for the $19 million increase was part misunderstanding and part overestimation.  Anderson’s  office thought there was a new court coming on line and so his office budgeted accordingly.  In addition several new vehicle purchases have been put on hold.  However a good chunk of the savings came from deferred payments to vendors.

Anderson says his original budget request was put together by his staff and he allowed the division chiefs to make the budget proposal, however he had to go back make sure everyone had cut as much as possible.

Anderson says he is optimistic that he’ll be able to function with the new budget request.  And Public Safety Director Scott Newman says the two sides are very close to reaching a settlement figure to fund the office.  One of the bigger points of contention is the cost per inmate at the County Jail.  The city-comptroller’s office estimated the figure at $107 per inmate.  The Sheriff’s office puts the figure at about $58.

A final vote on the budget will take place on September 22.

I don’t understand how keeping someone locked up can come to $107 per day?!?!
    -
I don’t understand the $58 per day figure either!
    -
We should have facilities for violent and non-violent ‘inmates’.
    -
Non-violent housed in tents (or Quonset Huts), minimal guards, in a barbed-wire compound.
    -
Violent inmates in a more secure facility (reinforced quonset hut), more guards, tighter security.
    -
BTW, we could use prisoners to build these facilities! Not only are they being useful, but would also learn a trade.

Why doesn’t ANYONE in the media ask the sheriff why his budget request is higher than his last budget. He lost over 600 merit (higher paid) deputies in the “consolidation?”

Why does he need 20 brand new prisoner vans since he just bought new vans in 2007.

How many “merit” deputies are there now?

What is the pay scale for “special,” “building,” and “civil” deputies? Did they get huge raises? Did he hire more to build up his political army?

Why do “building” deputies need take-home vehicles since their police powers are only good while they are at work?

He got $4MILLION dollars for “underbudgeted contract raises and overtime.” Two questions: 1) why was it “underbudgeted” when the terms of the contract were knows two years ago? 2) contract raises were for “merit” deputies, who were all transferred to IMPD under the “consolidation.”

Why? Because the media won’t rock the boat and get to the truth. Instead, they protect the left.

THE SIMPLE FACT IS, THE SHERIFF IS LYING.

Here’s how the numbers work out.

    - Anderson spent $26 million in salaries in 2007, but requested $36 million for 2009 (with a much smaller force.
    - Anderson spent $44,000 on hospital supplies in 2008, but Anderson requested $1,1 million for ‘09.
    - Anderson spent $146,609 on uniforms in 2008, but requested $193,000 in 2009 (with a much smaller force)
    - Anderson?s new vehicle budget was $11,000 in 2008; he requested $723,000 in 2009
Anderson spent $114,000 on car repairs an $0 on van repairs in 08, but requested $1.7 million for cars AND $740,000 for vans in 2009.
    - Anderson spent $11,000 on printing in 2008, but requested $723,000 in 2009

Bravo CT&C! Seems like another 10M to pare, minimum, allowing for big increases. I’m glad he came forward asking for less, but if your figures hold-up this still stinks big time.

Bling-Bling asked for less for only one reason…..HE WAS FOUND OUT!!
    -
The interview he had with Abdul last night (played this morning) was yet another run around. He said he had total faith in his CFO and his Deputy Chiefs to submit what they needed with “no fat”. But in the next sentence he said he checked it himself before presenting it and cut more.
    -
Which is it Frank?? Did they do the job or did they goof it up? Either way, had all this not been outed he would have presented the FULL budget he WANTED.

I suspect that Frankie did what all other government entities do…
    -
Ask for more than you REALLY need – knowing you might get less than you asked for.
    -
In this case, Frankie went high. Now he can claim he’s ‘cutting’ x-dollars to make himself look better.
    -
Exactly WHAT law enforcement duties does his office still maintain?

This is JMO you understand but I believe that Anderson and his cronies at the MCSD quietly backed off due to the fact that if the news media would suddenly start doing it’s job the playhouse that is the MCSD would be exposed for the money pit it is….and no, I am not speaking of the jails….think take home cars for non-emergency personnel, motorcycles for non-law enforcement personnel, think ridiculous salaries for MCSD retirees who are also collecting a fat pension checks(what do these people actually do all day to earn this kind of money?)…..all at taxpayer expense….There are people/families working for the MCSD who have lived (and driven btw)on the fat of the land at taxpayer expense most of their working lives……
