Meet the New Chairman, Same As the Old Chairman
Former Marion County Democratic Party Chairman Ed Treacy is now the new Marion County Democratic Party Chairman. Treacy ran unopposed and takes over from Mike O’Connor.
During his fiery speech to his fellow Democrats, Treacy did not refer to incumbent Mayor Greg Ballard by name, instead he called Ballard ”The Accidental Mayor.” (I hope he gave credit to Jen Wagner.) My question for Ed would be if Ballard is the Accidental Mayor, then who caused the accident?
Welcome back, Mr. Treacy.

I suppose it’s too much to ask that you mention that (how the “accident” happened) when you talk to Mr. Treacy?
July 31st, 2008 at 8:47 am
Hee. Treacy might not say it aloud, but I think he and numerous others would suggest that accident happened because he wasn’t in charge during that last election and those who were didn’t know what the h. they were doing.

-Think about it: Ed Treacy can do to the Democrat Party the same thing Bart Peterson did to the people of Indianapolis!

Bit is half right. Those who were in charge didn’t know what the hell they were doing, and Bart let them run the show.
Bart would be mayor today if he had rebuked Monroe Gray’s attitude/council leadership, in early summer. It’s just that simple.
Bart’s constant genuflecting toward the Center gang, outof fear, (misplaced) respect or whatever, sent a chill down the spines of many longtime party faithful.
The budget with missing pages didn’t help.

Mayor Peterson’s choices for some of his closest aides in his second administration made him Chief Chucklehead in my book.

“WHO CAUSED THE ACCIDENT”

I would have to say that Ed’s speech was exactly what you want from a party chair. Tom John fired back pronouncing Ed as exhumed from the “political graveyard.” People forget what Ed did in his six years as party chair. We saw Democrats take control of the City-County Council and every county office (except Prosecutor). The Democrats won township offices in Lawrence, Warren, and Wayne. The Democrats nearly took over the DECATUR TOWNSHIP SMALL CLAIMS COURT, TOO!
Of course Ed has his detractors, but he knows what he’s doing as the party chair. I was proud to support him. Things just got a lot more interesting for Mr. Tom John and the Republicans in control at the City-County Building.

The amazing thing to me is how people allow the media to guide them into placing continued importance on the GOP and Dem parties who’ve run local and national government into the ground. Anyone who’s looking for positive change, yet continues to support the “same old”, is simply delusional. They’re so indoctrinated and entrenched within the imaginary walls that they’ve drawn around themselves that they wouldn’t see a way out if you walked them through it. They’ve bought into the “lesser of two evils” lie and their gonna hold onto it at all costs.

Actually, I’m pleased that Ed Treacy has returned to the fray. The Marion County Democrats need someone to shake things up in a no-nonsense/take no prisoners kind of way, and from what I’ve read about him, he fits the bill.
As far as Tom John goes, maybe he was just firing the first (friendly?) broadside, just as a welcome back?
Either way, I don’t think it’ll be long before the party give-and-take picks up in pace.

I recognize that this is a part of our political system, but how sad it is when all the comments are so pointed to “we and they”.
How refreshing it would have been to hear that he was first interested in seeing what he could do to improve life in Indianapolis and Marion County vs putting a “target” on the mayors back. Great leadership. Interesting that the objective is party control vs. whats good for the county. Gee, I think I see part of our huge problem here. Political scum, all of them, that put themselves ahead of the very citizens they are suppose to represent.

Yep, SB. Seems like two sides blowing each other to smithereens in Ireland or whose sect are the true followers of Mohammed.

Jen Wagner always gave credit to Jim Shella for coining “The Accidental Mayor”.

It was an accident when Bart Peterson won the election 8 years ago. Misinformed voters always elect the wrong candidates.
The voters were well informed last year Mr. Treacy. You were a shyster in Monroe County prior to moving to Marion County in the 1980s and you remain a shyster. Reason why they wanted you back. Now that Julia is gone, the party needed someone unethical and treacherous to run the party machine. You are it.
Warning: Be careful though, too many safeguards are in place to stop voter fraud.

How was it an accident when Bart Peterson came from behind to defeat the sitting Indiana Secretary of State Sue Anne Gilroy? This after nearly 30 years of uninterrupted Republican control of the Mayor’s Office and the City-County Council. How was that an accident? Ballard just capitalized on the moment, and the Democrats ran a poor campaign.
Peterson, by the way, came to power before Ed Treacy took the chairmanship. As I said, ET has his detractors, and you are obviously one of them.

When a Mayor stands up and saids we are going to raise your taxes, I don’t care what the people says, Lock them out of the city county building if you have to, throw them out of meetings, then its no “accident that this person did not get re-elected. How soon the democrats whats citizens to forget.

Jon, Angry Democrat does not let facts stand in her way.
Bart’s first election was no accident or surprise. He did spend a lot of his own money, to which he’s entitled, but after that, raising money was nooooooo problem.
He stopped listening to precinct folks about 4.5 yrs into his terms. And he started bowing to the wrong folks inside the party, at about the same time.
Ed will do a good job. He’s inheriting a mess.

Hopefully he’s better at running a political party than his wife is at running a courtroom. She’s so soft on crime I keep waiting to see her order the bailiff to pass out cupcakes to all the inmates.

I tell you what, Easter. When your party starts fielding some candidates who possess integrity, dont run afoul of the law, or who will not support those of their own who engage in same, then perhaps, PERHAPS Ed Treacy has a chance at being effective again. Until then, unless he starts to clean house in the upcoming elections, and works with the party apparatus, then your party will be in the minority in Marion Co government, as they should be, at this moment in time.

Indycop:
Actually his wife is not soft on crime, she’s ‘inconsistent’ and plays politics in the courtroom, favoring some attorneys and disfavoring others. So, she was probably playing favoritism to a democrat attorney she likes. She doesn’t like too many though, she’s insecure because Treacy got her on the bench and many resented it because she was not as qualified as other more deserving attorneys.
Also, she’s ‘extremely’ emotional and has her staff on pins & needles often because they’ll never know when she’ll take something the wrong way, which is often, pout then throw her judicial muscle in retaliation towards those with less power.

Treacy was part of the secret deal by which Veolia landed the city water contract:
“Some answers may lie in how and why VWI was chosen to run the city’s utility and who locally benefited.
To begin with, Veolia made a brilliant choice of high-powered politically connected “advisors” to land the contract. The team included Marion County Democratic Chair Ed Treacy and former Chair Kip Tew, former State Democratic Chair Robin Winston and Tom New, former chief of staff for Gov. Frank O’Bannon.”
