Two Questions

I have two questions for you as Indianapolis deals with a sharp increase in violence and homicides.

  1. Have you had enough?
  2. What are you going to do to make a difference?

Feel free to elaborate on your answers.

  • George

    1) Yes I have had enough.
    2) I am making sure my handguns are in top working order and my permit is within easy access. I will not be a victim & I will not stand by helplessly waiting for the police. I have every right to defend my family and myself, and I will do whatever is required to do so.

  • I’m Not Wilson (Praise Allah)

    Thank You George, Good Response

  • Jack

    1. Yes! But, that will make little difference, until many more of us have had enough too. And, are willing to put action behind their thoughts.

    2. I work from home and watch for trouble while I’m at it. (The shotgun on the wall isn’t just decorative). I stay in touch with my neighbors. I avoid areas I view as unsafe. And, like George, I keep things with me, which I hope to NEVER need the use of…

  • Muckraker

I will NOT vote for Brizzi. I hope someone with courage runs for prosecutor.

  • mike

First the fear, then we become prisoners in our own homes. Soon the bunker mentality takes over. Laws are for those that abide by them. Locks only work on honest people. Freedom is no longer free. It is becoming only accesible to those that can afford it or are willing to take it. Where ya gonna run, where ya gonna hide. The reasons most americans have weapons will soon become evident. We are spiralling out of control at the speed of government…. yeah Ive had enough

In 1989 I predicted this would be happening. when I first noticed so many uneducated, unwed, teenage mothers. Those girls’ babies are now grown up thugs.
    .
Here’s a start of what to do:
    .
Bring back all IPD retirees who want to work under Ballard. Put the older guys in patrol cars and the younger guys walking beats in patrol groups (in vests) throughout areas with highest crime incidence.
    .
Meanwhile make it clear that citizens have support from prosecutor’s office to defend their own properties with deadly force if needed.
    .
Have cops lead public gun safety classes for homeowners. Make sure the homeowner gun safety classes are well publicized on the news and that the thugs get the message that homeowners are armed and have full support from the city.
    .

Make it clear that everyone…cops and citizens…working together to eliminate this criminal element.
    .
Give better education opportunities, lottery tickets, vacations, foot locker gift certificates, or other rewards to people who snitch on the thugs that get convicted. Get retailers and local businesses to contribute the reward prizes as tax write-offs.
    .
Increase homeownership throughout the city (sky high property taxes work against this).
    .
    Revisit Giuiliani’s techniques.

    Break the “entitlement” cycle.

My copies of the US and Indiana constitutions say NOTHING about the govmint taking care of me cradle to grave.

Not everybody is “entitled” to a big, fancy car, fancy cell phone, fancy huge TV and full cable, big steaks, etc.

If you want it, WORK for it and EARN it like the rest of us have to.

  • Noticed

I will do as I always do as a lawabiding citizen. I have come to the conclusion you cannot help people that do not want to do things for themselves. Sorry, but all the law enforcement and money thrown at the unwilling will not change a thing. The lifestyles of some citizens are to blame. I came from the ranks of the poor so I can make those statements. It’s commendable to help set up community programs etc. but after all thse years of the welfare with no responsibility it has taken its toll.

  • BigRic

1)Yes I’ve had enough. As soon as I can afford nice place, I’m going to have to sit down and seriously consider moving out of Marion County.
    .
2)This probably won’t make a difference, but I am going to continue monitoring the homicide database map and the general crime database map and stay the hell out of the places with high crime.
    .
To make a difference, I am looking into volunteering for an organization that is doing community development. I think this is a great way to at least keep crime out of my part of town. Oh yeah, and one last thing, the next time I see two cars pull up side by side (driver side to driver side) outside my apt. window, exchanging baggies acting like no one can see them in broad daylight like a bunch of numbn$ts, I’m calling the cops.

  • Robert

Yes, I have had enough….you give politicians books and they eat the pages! I will continue to search for competent people to support for public office! So much for political promises and slogans!

  • Grover

Odd… Wasn’t Ballard’s campaign mission statement “Had Enough”? Kind of why I voted for him and complained about the other guy, right?

I am making a difference by instilling values in my daughter such as “Thou Shall not Kill”. How am I do keep John Doe from rolling Senior Citizens for what little they have left?

A year ago it was the administration’s fault, this year it’s our fault? Try again…

  • Angry Democrat

Tell the Carmelistes to stop driving into Center Townshop looking for drugs and prostitutes. This would curtails alot of the crimes.

  • Concerned Taxpayer & Citizen

Tell the Center Township hoods to get a REAL job. Like scalping tickets to big events on EVERY corner.

I’m SURE they claim the income on their taxes.

  • Adam

The new Mayor needs to fight crime more quietly and promote the cities strengths more loudly.

More community policing, police on the street, and a emphasis on education and workforce development in troubled areas.

Less “Don’t Snitch” billboards that brand areas of the city as places to avoid.

Less media photo oppportunities yelling “Stop the violance and peace in the streets”

More promotion of the arts, economic development and new tourism and convention announcements.

  • Angry Caucasian Boy 2008

Where is “The Seed”? Another fine officer of IMPD has fallen….and no help from the 7th Congressional elected official…

I have an idea….Andre, the Mayor and the Governor should park The National Guard in these areas and declare limited martial law…It is proven that the violence is a result of the community having no sense to self govern the neighborhoods….so WE WILL!!!!

Col. Ballard should treat this like an insurgency and declare war on the thugs and go out and eradicate the cancer….If your caught after dark on the street without a valid pass to work or can prove an emergency to be on the street…you are arrested on the spot…if your caught violating a law..especially committing a felony…straight to the DOC until your case can be heard …limited habeus…

When it has gotten to Seniors being slaughtered in our neighborhoods…it is time to govern for the non-conformists that have no desire to police their neighborhoods or themselves…Just a start…Thoughts?

  • Taxpayer 834512

I like Ballard’s focus on safety, economics and education. Granted, they’re all works in progress, the honeymoon’s over at some point, and profound oratory will not be his long suit. But, I’ll confess “fighting crime more quietly” and “promoting the arts” don’t grab me right now given current events.

  • Southside John

I have had enough. However, it seems like more than the majority of these killings involve criminals killing criminals. That is going to happen, and I am sorry , but that is really just a cleansing of our streets. However, now we have seniors being shot in their home, and police officers being shot in the street – now I have had enough.

What will I do about it? I will not hang out at 38th and college or anywhere similar, I will not associate with felons, and I will legally carry my handgun with me. I will support local law enforcement in their attempt to control these people that are put back on the streets after they are repeatedly “rehabilitated”. I will vote for judges and politicians who are truly tough on crime – and that follow through on that.

  • Anonymous Nobody

    1. I “Had Enough” in 2007.
    2. I’m packing heat.

  • Taxpayer 834512

    1) Yes
    2) Keep active in writing, calling, voting, and generally being a cranky citizen. Probably buy a gun and learn how to use it. Hopefully work for a good candidate(s). Try to find more time to serve as a role model, remembering that’s as big an influence as spouting my opinion.

  • Joe

Perhaps Joe Horn of Pasadena Texas had the right idea. The police, with their limited resources, are reactive not proactive. The SCOTUS has upheld the right of the individual to possess a firearm, the only way to be sure that you are not a victim is to do everything you can to protect yourself and your family.

The Gores, Kerrys, Clintons, Obamas, Kennedys (add your favorite gun control politician’s name) all have one thing in common, they have paid security that is armed to protect them wherever they go. As far as the average citizen, we are on our own.

To quote Edward R. Murrow, “Good night and good luck.”

  • http://indianapolsnewgoverment2008.blogspot.com/ David Myers

As one police officer told me, the citizens are the first line of defense, we are your backup. The police can not be everyplace at any certain time. Until the citizens get involved not only watching for but taking actions when crimes are being committed, we will not see much change.

We need longer sentences even if it means building more jail space. We need more death sentences for murder. Some say that the death sentence is not the answer to murder but one thing is for sure, that person will not get out on parole and he or she will never kill again

When we finally get the idea that some will never fit in our society as a normal human beings with any feelings for the rest of society, then maybe we can do something about crime. Yes, I think people have had enough.

  • John Howard

An interesting concept I read about awhile back was that once the jails fill up, we should start executing the worst of the worst to make room for the new arrivals. This, rather than building more jails, seems like an answer.

  • Jay

    1. Yes, but it’s not that much different this year.

    2. I spend years and hundreds of hours on websites explaining how stupid it is to build hotels and football stadiums when you can’t walk thru much of this town at night.

So, I’m getting out, probably next year. Indy is the new Detroit.

“Screw you guys, I am out of here” – Eric Cartman

  • Think Again

Interesting defeatist attitudes. No thugs are gonna run me out of my hometown.

John Howard, before you pop off, you might want to check facts. Jails here are not full.

And, FYI, jails are not necessarily for crominals. They’re (mostly) for folks charged bubt not yet convicted. Prisons are for convicts. That pesky Constitution always messes things up.

Executions, huh? Marquis de Sade would be so proud.

Taxpayer has it right. Kepe being a cranky citizen. Demand more from our elected officials, on the crime issue, and on accountability in general.

Do not rest until you get your answers.

Oh yeah, and won’t someone credible please run against Monroe Gray next time? Preferably in the primary.

  • Rico43

    1) Yes. I have had enough.

    2) I will not support candidates for elected office who devalue life by supporting partial-birth abortions. I will not support candidates who have devalued the role of God and religion in our lives. I will not support candidates who favor policies that have harmed and continue to harm the American family unit, policies that have disproportionately harmed the black American family. I will not support candidates who favor policies that have perpetuated the racial divide.

Our current crisis in Indianapolis will not be solved by ‘Peace in the Streets’ signs or prayer vigils. It is a systemic problem that has evolved over decades. In a representative republic, these issues can only be solved through legislation and enforcement. That is why we have no right to complain when we continue to support political candidates who have created and exacerbated our current climate of violence and disregard for life.

  • Rico43

Maybe our support of such candidates (Carsons, Peterson, Obama etc.) is ‘coming home to roost’.

Lets get back to the basics. Almost all, if not all of these crimes involved vehicles with unlicensed drivers. Its time to put them on foot. Most are not aware that as officers come in contact with the public how many drivers are unlicensed uninsured and suspened. Only some suspended drivers are arrestable. However, it does take a valid license and insurance to drive. It is common practice for officers once this is learned to ticket the driver and then put them back behind the wheel letting them drive. This must stop. I say all that are unlicense or uninsured must have the vehicle towed. No, not released to a friend or family member. As a prosector once told me that this is the fastest way for them to get re enstated, unsuspended. Anyway for a short time it puts them on foot and some of the vehicles will be left at the wrecker lot because they are unsafe junk. Heck, it will even save on gas……..Lets get out there and tow them.

  • retired ipd

sorry for the spelling errors, should proof read lol

  • Taxpayer 834512

Is it cheaper to do the license/seatbelt checks to get unlicensed bad guys off the streets than the manhours/expense put in when can can get around to commit their crimes? Or, they do their crimes with a licensed buddy?

  • Taxpayer 834512

…put in when bad guys can get around…

  • retired ipd

no such thing as a license check point. that would be illegal. however wasn’t referring to seatbelt zones, officers stop many people each day for many reasons(all legal). when this occurs and they aren’t licensed then tow the car.

  • http://bartlies.com Bart Lies

“that once the jails fill up” does not claim ‘jails ARE filled up.’

But we’ll call them ‘prisons’ if it makes everyone happier. Or perhaps, ‘that iron-bar and razor wire thingy where murders and rapists briefly take up residence between crimes.’

  • Shorebreak

Here’s a thought on the answer to increased violence: The definition of insanity is to continue doing the same thing, and expecting a different result.
    .
Yet we continue to add laws and call for harsher prison terms. To see how effective that’s been, all we need to do is look at murder rates now and murder rates before capital punishment was re-instated. Have new laws and harsher sentences actually detered crime? Not if you know how to count.
    .
Here’s another thought: Most murders and violent crimes revolve around some financial component. Theft, a bad debt, drug money, gang turf (which comes down to money), and other money related issues. If you’re following recent and current economic trends, you know that the situation is only going to get worse over the next several years, regardless of the penalties and the actions taken by law enforcement. Desperate times lead to desperate crimes.

    AMEN!

  • Really

I’m moving. Indianapolis house just sold this past week. Getting out of Dodge. I have been in this city for more than 18 years and it is simply getting worse in almost every aspect. In particular politics. And obviously it is not getting any better regardless of political/ideological affiliation you are with. Good luck.
