Property Tax Tales

As Marion County residents line up this week to pay their property tax reconciliation bills , I spoke to some area officials to get their take on the subject…

Governor Mitch Daniels

The reassessment was more fair than what homeowners were paying before. Homeowners would have been paying what businesses should have been paying. People make mistakes and he doesn’t doubt that many individual assessments need further corrections.

Reassessments are just part of the overall tax reform and as caps come in Marion County residents will see much lower property tax bills. They can expect a reduction in 2009 to 1½ percent cap and 2010 when the 1 percent cap kicks in.

Marion County Treasurer Mike Rodman

People have been in relatively good spirits paying their bills. The rebate checks have helped somewhat. Rodman says he will go back to the Legislature and ask for an option monthly installment plan for all property taxes. Rodman says paying your property tax bill monthly would be like paying your other monthly utilities. He says he and the Ballard administration will be approaching the General Assembly about implementing such a plan.

Shirley Mizen, Deputy Auditor Marion County

More than 3,000 property tax rebate checks have come back to the Marion County Auditor’s office. Mizen says some of the checks have come back because of bad addresses , the homeowner has moved and the checks can’t be forwarded or the property owner was on vacation and had their mail held so it came back to the Auditor as required by law.

Mizen says as the checks come back they will review whether it should have gone out in the first place and those that should have will be resent. In the event a check is returned another time, if it is over $10 it will be valid for two years and then go into the Attorney General’s Unclaimed Property Fund .

More than 255,000 property tax rebate checks have been sent out to residential homeowners.

I’ll have more tales for you tomorrow.

And how many thousands, like myself, didnt get a rebate because the mortgage and homestead credits just disappeared

There is something disgusting about a monthly payment to the government to keep your home

The story about the problems with rebate checks will hit the headlines soon.

I received a sizable rebate check in the mail even though the accompany letter stated that I should not be receiving a rebate check since they will be sending it to my mortgage company to apply against my mortgage escrow account.

I suspect thousands of taxpayers will cash there rebate checks only to get a collection letter later that requests they pay it back.

The politicians are just hoping the bad news waits until after the election.

  • Think Again

They’re distracting us with shiny objects like small rebate checks.

Don’t forget, as Wilson said, in November.

Anyone who supported this insane property tax plan needs to go–Democrats and Republicans both.

It’s cruel and typical of the legislature.

‘good spirits’ in paying property tax bills? Not hardly. Look at the thousands of irate home owners and businesses who have backed up appeals for 2 years. If that is the government’s spin, I’m not surprised. Remove them all. They didn’t do their job and it’s their calamity that visited the citizens and created the ongoing uproar for decades. Citizens are being used as guinea pigs in lawmakers’ experiments they call reform in a failed system that is unfixable. Problems will continue for decades because our General Assembly cannot see past the cash cow of your property being used as collateral with the Bond Bank. “Good spirits”? No one is buying it.

    TA,
    -
You are absolutely right but, no one is paying attention. At least, not until it is too late.
    -
The Mitch-quis de’ Sade and his merry band of perverts in the GA, have the violation of “homeowners” planned out to the Nth degree.
    -
You might as well spell relief “PHART”, at least there would be more satisfaction and, less stink!
    -
There are NO party distinctions left! There will be NO property tax relief – Now, or in the future! Ask Fat-Pat-Rat-Hat! He’ll regurgitate what has worked to bait & switch before. The only action they are capable of is, the distraction of theatrics, under the guise of concern.

Welcome to the Socialist Republic of Indiana!

Like I said earlier this week, within about 30 days you are going to see the sheeple start bleating loudly…when their adjusted mortgage statements arrive.
    .
I hate to say it, but I think the Governor screwed up royally this time.

A lawyer with Community Development Law Center wants to help homeowners in danger of losing their homes due to the property tax increases. There is a forum this Saturday, July 12th at 9am. Details can be found on the Hoosiers For Fair Taxation blog.

That’s wonderful that Mr. Rodman will ask the legislature “for an option monthly installment plan for all property taxes.”

After he said it would not work when David Moscrip urged the same idea over a week ago.

Mike Rodman has been touting a monthly payment plan for over a year now. For my money, you won’t find a finer public servant than our Treasurer. He has been responsive and has been a voice of reason throughout all of this madness.

He also has nothing to do with the assessments. He just collects the money and sends out the bills.
