In Case You Were Wondering

Although the headlines have been pretty full lately, there are some things that have been under the surface that I think are worth mentioning.

If you were wondering how a prominent pastor’s daughter ended up being a victim of violent crime, my police sources say her husband was allegedly mixed up with some bad actors and the motive for the killing was to send him a message.

If you were wondering how police caught the guy who allegedly shot a TV photographer and and a freelance photographer at a house fire last week, it’s easy. They traced the bullet and found the shot came directly from the man’s home.

If you were wondering what the vote total was that got Gabrielle Campo her party’s nomination to take on Andre Carson it was Campo - 40, Patrick O’Connor - 18, Ray Irwin - 15, Kevin Green - 2.

And if you were wondering why the second Saturday night of Indiana Black Expo had fewer problems than last year (32 arrests in 2008, 76 arrests in 2007.  90 curfew violations in 2008, 111 curfew violations in 2007) in addition to good police work and faith-based patrols, here’s another one, $4 a gallon gas.

The gas prices may have contriobuted, Abdul, but I was there, and the post-sundown crowd on the streets looked just as large.

Cops started warning the youngsters about curfew early, and they held to it. There was some jaw-jacking, but at the witching hour, a bunch of cars pulled up, a couple of paddy wagons, and dozens of errant teens were swept away, as promised.

The story about the pastro’s daughter tugged at my heart. Then I read the newspaper story about the whole sordid incident. Seems the pastor and his wife had tried, without success, to get their daughter straight, away from thugs, and on to a cleaner life.

    They obviously lost.

Last summer, we had a wicked shooting of a yound lady and one or two of her kids, didn’t we? Same story.

In each case, you have to ask: is it customary to “give up” on a young-adult who’s your child? In know I’d move heaven and earth to get my grandkids away from anyone who behaved this way, and I’d do almost anything to get her away from the lifestyle that contributed to it.

She was stopped twice in the last year. She had drugs in her possession once, but someone else copped for the pot (sounds very Pacer-like, huh?) And for some reason known only to God, she bought a gun, registered it carried it, and her parents STILL can’t intervene?

A daughter of mine buys a gun, for whatever reaosn, and she loses her kids. Simple.

Still, it’s all a tragedy. Evidently this is yet another pastor who couldn’t not preach to his most improtant flock: his own kids.

Sometimes successful people forget about their children. Case in point I see Tony Dungy spending a awful lot of time in Indianapolis during the off season and doing kids camps, colts functions and even church speeches. I never see his kids. I would hope they are staying out of the spot light during these interview. Maybe he talks to them on the phone, text and emails them. It still doesn’t take the place of a hug or spending time playing games or reading books. He lost his son to a suicide, I just wonder…

Previous posted to the Advance Indiana blog - I cut and pasted just wanted to Gary credit first..

When I was in Florida a number (OK A LOT OF YEARS AGO ;) ) on spring break the Daytona Police Department came and arrested every college kid at the hotel next door. Apparently the kids were jumping back and forth between the balconies and one kid fell and seriously hurt himself. This was the 70’s so no guns but plenty of drugs and alcohol were found when these kids were arrested. Hmmm how many of these college students are successful business people, clergy, parents, etc.. So lets not read to much into the the kids and the Black Expo. As for showing off skin and sex it was abundant everywhere you looked. - Best get away weekend Chicago - Worst getaway weekend IPD lockup. - yeah I stole that quote from the Indianapolis Monthly over 15 years ago. Hmmm i wonder who wrote it …

As for the gas I suspect a bunch of those kids took the Metro bus downtown. A cheap alternative to expensive gas.

  5. Just Wondering

Actually I was wondering why 487 officers were needed to be detailed downtown Saturday night to keep the peace amongst the crowds of young people when it only takes 17 officers at any given time being detailed for the Future Farmers Of America convention that attracts larger crowds of young people. Just curious.

A clarification : I posted the Dungy post on Adavance Indiana - Just giving Gary the credit for running a great blog!

A-Future Farmers of America aren’t known for shooting people at their events.

    do I get a prize?

What a great point had never even thought of it that way. The FFA has been a wonderful organiztion for anyone willing to put on that ugly jacket they give you. They don’t care black white green or purple as long as you act as you should. With the BE there is much less supervision and with that kids will be kids it doesn’t matter what race they are. It’s just sad that now they are to quick with the gun and less quick with fists.

  10. John Howard

Does FFA have late-night events that dump 30000 people onto the streets all at once at midnight to 2AM?

    There’s your answer.

IBE really needs to wrap things earlier in the evening. And with the obvious large number of minors in attendance, that seems only logical.

By the way, the curfew for 15yo’s was set at 1AM Saturday night. That’s way too late. “It’s 11pm, do you know where your children are?” and all that. This was rebroadcast numerous times because some officers were detaining kids from midnight onward and they were having way too many brought into the holding areas who shouldn’t have been.

  11. Jerry

John - I don’t think it’s that simple regarding late night events. I’m sure farmer kids know how to have a “good time” if you know what I mean, and they probably have 2 - 3 times the number of guns compared to IBE kids. There is one difference that is a bigger deal - FFA kids typically have moms and dads and a good family. Although their economic status might not be much better than IBE kids, they were raised better and have common sense versus street smarts. They leave their guns at home and leave “good times” for out in the fields when their parents don’t know . . . versus IBE kids carrying guns and having “good times” right on our streets.

If you remember last year tax protesters filled the circle to voice their concerns about taxes. But let this year with 69 homicides in our city, I see no blogs or post where they are planning any kind of action on crime. Sixty nine and counting and that’s only homicides. How many more crimes happen in this city each day?

I would like to see citizens letting their voices heard about crime in this city. I would like to see citizens fill the circle to let the criminals that we are not going to take this lying down. Would anyone be willing to start what you could call a protest like we did on property taxes? If so I am open to suggestion. You can view my blog (witch has my email address) and I would like to hear you comments about the above subject. http://indianapolsnewgoverment2008.blogspot.com/

If I do not get any feed back then I guess you are not interested in forming some kind of event.

I’ve heard Ms. Campo speak a couple of times on issues and Mr. Irwin once. Ms. Campo sounds young and earnest, but given Irwin’s superior resume, experience, and ability to talk on the issues, why was the young lady chosen as the Republican candidate? The GOP’s just going thru the motions & they’ll be less pressured to spend $ for a slot they won’t win anyway? Seems like we drift further and further from good candidates.

  18. Think Again

Where is the 487 officers detailed anywhere but here? And, why is it an issue? The IMPD detailed the number of officers they thought they needed. Get over it.

They did an excellent job this weekend. I witnessed several situations that could’ve exploded, but the IMPD officers displayed courage and tact. They defused multiple potential incidents that I saw, and who knows how many more?

As for Ms. Campo–she’s perfect evidence the local GOP leadership doesn’t get it. Cute, perhaps articulate. But a loser. Ray was a much better choice.

  19. Just Wondering

Think Again, Obviously you missed the point.

“Although the headlines have been pretty full lately, there are some things that have been under the surface that I think are worth mentioning…”
    .
In light of that opening statement, I’d like to add one more piece of news that hasn’t received coverage. It’s an out-of-state issue, but it could have impact on the actions of the Indiana State Legislature if the story ever goes mainstream. In Oklahoma, the Oklahoma House of Representatives has passed House Joint Resolution 1089 with a 92 to 3 vote. The resolution states the following:
    .
“Whereas, the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States reads as follows: ‘The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.’; and Whereas, the Tenth Amendment defines the total scope of federal power as being that specifically granted by the Constitution of the United States and no more; and whereas, the scope of power defined by the Tenth Amendment means that the federal government was created by the states specifically to be an agent of the states; and Whereas, today, in 2008, the states are demonstrably treated as agents of the federal government. … Now, therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives and the Senate of the 2nd session of the 51st Oklahoma Legislature: that the State of Oklahoma hereby claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the Constitution of the United States. That this serve as Notice and Demand to the federal government, as our agent, to cease and desist, effective immediately, mandates that are beyond the scope of these constitutionally delegated powers.”
    .
    The rest is here:
    http://disc.yourwebapps.com/discussion.cgi?disc=149495;article=119309;
    .
It looks like it’s “Game On” between Oklahoma and the federal government, and our wonderful, unbiased, fair and balanced media hasn’t had the integrity to report it to us. If you need to ask “why not?”, you clearly haven’t been paying attention. And if you don’t think this should be national news, you clearly don’t understand how the 1861 war for independence began (it wasn’t a civil war, contrary to the history books - the fight was for succession to get away from Washington control, not for control of Washington).
    .
If this resolution passes successfully in OK, the corporations who benefit from fed control could lose their stranglehold over other states. They’re not gonna let that happen, and they’re gonna do their damnedest to keep the story out of our living rooms. After all, every patriotic American wants legitimate Constitutional government. Once people find out that a real, legislative movement to protect it is under way, there will be no way (short of military intervention) for the federal government to stop it.

  22. Greg

Wow, Shorebreak, this is something to chew on. Thanks for the alert.

  23. Taxpayer 834512

If this got by the other house & governor signed, this can’t be brought to the Supreme Court? If so, if you can barely have a gun by 5-4 vote, this would be toast.

  24. Jerry

Thanks for the info Shorebreak. You help make this site VERY interesting. Hopefully taxpayer isn’t right, but his point is pretty good.
