AND THE NOMINEE IS…

Barack Obama is now the presumptive Democratic nominee for the Presidency of the United States.  Say what you will about his policies or disagree with his politics, but America made history tonight.  For the first time an African-American has been nominated to head a major political party for the most important job in the world.  Something like this happening was unheard of when my father was my age, and never even imagined during my grandfather’s time.

You have to think about this as a country, when it comes to race, this shows we have made a ton of progress.  We still have some ways to go in some areas, but at least for now, we all have an opportunity to see history be made.  At the very least, you have to feel good about that.

Now the campaign can begin in earnest.

I just pray that Hillary doesn’t become the next Lyndon Johnson.

Hillary’s response was called ‘defiant’ by the media last night. No concession. How sad for her lack of class.

  3. varangianguard

Me too, Shorebreak. But maybe, for different reasons.

  4. Bumpy

You got that right Shore and Varan. High stakes poker and shotgun marriages generally have disasterous consequences.

I am missing something. I don’t think his race is an issue. Folks forget. His Mom was white and his Dad was black. So folks need to stop discriminating against his white Mom.

The one question I find fascinating is that Mormon Mitt Romney had to justify and elaborate his Mormon roots. Kennedy because he was Catholic. Barak Hussein Obama is a Muslim (and educated in a Muslim school and has a Muslim father) and yet no one to this day has questioned this (albeit he is now associated with a Christian religion).

No, Abdul, we don’t have to feel good about it. In fact, I think that Obama’s overwhelming support despite having the most liberal record in the Senate is due largely to his color. That, to me, is the exact opposite of progress. The fact that race is a dominant factor in this campaign demonstrates how little we’ve evolved as a society. We’ve had two black Secretaries of State (in a GOP administration, mind you) and that has meant little to the Dems, particularly black Dems. I would be happy to vote for a black man or woman for the presidency of the U.S, provided it is the right man or woman for the job.
The fact that you support Obama at all, Abdul, displays your lack of conviction in your conservative beliefs. The man’s primary goal is to grow government, and, in turn, grow the number of those who depend on government. If this man was 100% white, rather than 50% white, I cant help but think you’d be condemning his socialist agenda.

Being an african american male in this country with having a history of slavery, lynchings even as a matter of fact 60 years ago we could not even VOTE and now having the chance to run this good ole “White America”….is PROGRESS.

    Dude wake up…..

  8. Shorebreak

JD - would it also be progress if an Idi Amin was given the chance to run the country?
    .
If you are truly awake, race won’t play ANY factor in your approval of a political figure. It has absolutely ZERO impact on policy once the individual is sworn in. Do you honestly want a President whose policies are a model of marxist ideology, and who has been promoted to the top of the political food chain by corporate media?

At the end of the day, the man is impressive. He possesses lots of grace and has outstanding stage presence. It is easy to see how shallow minded people will get caught up in support of this given the horrible state of politics today. Where is the substance of his agenda? Bush and his republican friends have betrayed the opportunity given to them. Lets hope that Obama does the same to his supporters. If he does not, this country will be taking a sharp left turn, and it is onto a dead-end street. Then again, can he cause more damage than Bush has created? And can we absorb more political dysfunction?

The contrast of our vast, collective decline to a man who looks and sounds refreshingly different seems to have also given him a free pass in dodging discussion of the sacrifice needed to save our country. If Senator Obama’s leadership is the real deal, I hope I’m wrong and he’s a closet fiscal and environmental conservationist- or will find the pragmatism to lead us that way.

    November 6,2008 Election

Sen. Barak Obama, president and Caroline Kennedy, vice president

Sen. John McClain, president and Condelessa Rice, Vice president

No Hiliary in the mix for women!

  12. Concerned Taxpayer & Citizen

It is so sad to see blacks interviewed on TV who are just swooning because of Obama being the democratic nominee.

All they can say is how great it is to have a black man to elect president.

NOBODY says anything about his policies, beliefs, past political record, etc.

If that isn’t RACIST, I don’t know what is.

Rico43, Shorebreak, and Greg. Yours are some of the most insightful, thoughtful, and intelligent responses I have seen in response to this whole fiasco! Thanks for saying it in words that people can understand!

I am not saying its all about color…what I am simply saying is we (ALL PEOPLE) have made progress in this society and some of us are still living in a shallow world. I wouldn’t care if he was purple, blue or orange for that matter. I am for what is right and what will DIG our country out of this HOLE we are in. We all know the economy is in the worst shape. So if we can elect anyone…let it be someone for the people and elected by the people.

  15. Shorebreak

JD - your initial post implied otherwise. Thanks for the clarification.
    .
Regarding economic recovery, everything Obama says SOUNDS hopeful. But remember, a campaign has nothing to do with policy, truth, reality, or intent. It’s all about “message”. Whoever conveys their message most effectively will win, so long as the corporations who benefit from policy agree to promote them in the media.
    .
We need to move beyond Obama’s “message” and get into his policy. Based upon his record, upon the policy record of his advisory staff, and upon his recommendations for change, Obama will do nothing more than radically build upon the economic and other policy foundations that have been advanced and implemented by each successive White House’s for the last 40 years.
    .
This media chosen, corporate candidate is not a solution to maintaining and protecting the integrity of the Constitution and the strength of US soveriegnty. And race has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Go to the linked HFFT blog for a message to all of your real republicans…the ones that want government to:
    1. Be small
    2. Be open and accountable
    3. Keep its nose out of our personal lives
    4. Leave our guns alone

I don’t disagree with your last remarks…and being that I’ve know Abdul for 35+ years….I can respect your comments.
