WILL PREDJUDICE PLAY IN THE 7TH?

As we get closer to the May primary for the 7th Congressional District, I wonder how much will prejudice play a role in the decisions of voters?   It’s unfortunate that race, religion and gender still play a role in the 21st Century, but we have to acknowledge that reality.

Some people may choose to vote against Andre Carson, Carolene Mays and Woody Myers because they are Black.

Some people may vote against David Orentlicher because he is white.

Some may also vote against Carson because he is a Muslim.

Some may vote against Orentlicher because he is Jewish.

Some may vote against Mays because she is a woman.

Some may vote against Myers because he committed the unforgivable sin of living somewhere else for a while.

And there are even some Black people who won’t vote for Myers or Mays because of their “complexion and hair.”  (You know what I mean!)

What’s even sadder is that some people will vote for the candidates because of those reasons.

I have no problem voting for or against someone because you got to know them, but if you are going to make your voting decision based on one of the above mentioned reasons, do everyone a favor and don’t vote.

    Amen.

  • Think Again

    You are so correct.

But in the category of support, this one irked me:

I know and have followed Rep Mays’s career for several years. Her work ethic is admirable, but she’s a homophobe and she rlies on sketchy data to back up her views in that category. SO I won’t vote for her.

And yesterday, I stopped at my favorite Mickey D’s for their fantabulous Iced Coffee. The restaurant was surrounded by Mays signs. I happen to know the owners, and I’m sure they support Mays, which is their right.

And it was my right to pull out of that drive-up lane, and call their “Faith Equals Action” (or whatever similar drivel is on their drive-up windows telling me to have a blessed day) hotline, and complain.

And that lady hung up on me!

I’m going to base my decision in this race, on qualifications and views on issues. To me, that eliminates Andre and Carolene. But others are free to make their own conclusions.

    Which they will.

I won’t be voting for any of them because they aren’t conservative. I have never thought that one should be judged on the lightness or darkness of their skin. I may be white but, if you put a Walter E. Williams, David Sowell, J.C. Watts, Vernon Robinson, perhaps Colin Powell or Condelizza Rice out there, I would vote for them in a heart-beat. I find it very disheartening to see the voters of the seventh district (I am one.) voting for a particular candidiate just because of he/she’s skin color is the same as their own regardless of qualifications.

There is not a human being on the planet that doesn’t have some predjudice in them. I try and make my voting decisions in the exact same manner as the ultra right wing conservatives do. I chose based on how the candidate represents the ideas and opinions I possess. I do prefer that they not exist on the basis of the swear equity of others such as is Andre’s situation. I do prefer that they be formally educated at least in their chosen professions. I do prefer that they be broad minded and accept all people regardless of race, creed, color, national origin or sexual preference. I do prefer that they be fiscally conservative and no seek to continue spending the taxpayers dollars unwisely on 5000.00 toilet seats for Pentagon Generals to sit on when their war planning games take a break. I do prefer they don’t follow their own parties line but their own individual common sense. In short, I prefer they be human like me.

yet again, abdul is the one who tells it like it is even though it’s an uncomfortable subject. thank you and amen.

ok, i’m voting for whomever can beat carson. i am absolutely disgusted at the way this seat was bestowed upon him.

i know nothing about myers other than what he is saying about himself. clearly he is intelligent but it seems unclear how he can pay for all these things he wants to do. i am encouraged by the number of yard signs in areas of town that have been carson strong holds in the past.

i am fairly familiar with mays. while smart and ambitious, her district is in shambles. watching lafayette square and 38th street accelerate it’s decline is not a good omen for what she would bring to indy.

david o. is clearly bright and knows how things work. i currently live in his district and have been disapppointed that he has not been a more effective leader in the house. great ideas only matter if you can influence action. i thought he would be campaigning much harder than he is. of the 4 main candidates, he seems to have the lowest profile at the moment. that being said, he’s the thinking persons candidate the most likely to appeal to the obama crowd and the newbie voters, if they know who he is.

sooooo, is there any polling data yet available? again, my vote is going to whomever will beat carson. it just isn’t clear who is the front runner right now.

    help anyone?

For the first time in a long time, I haven’t even thought about these ethnicity issues. I can tell you that age and life experiences help to level the playing field. As for me, I am supporting Myers because he is an honest person and the best qualified for the 7th.

No, what is even sadder is the sheep that just keep punching the Carson ticket. I laugh when I see Andre talk about what Washington isn’t doing – just like GRANDMA!

  • anonymous

Oh yeah, I’m voting for Myers.

  • Bob Miller

I’m prejudiced in favor of candidates who will do a proper job in Washington. Too bad I don’t see any.
