SUNDAY MORNING MUSINGS

There’s no one major story to write about this morning, but there are a few smaller items of interest.

FIRE, FIRE BURNING BRIGHT

Expect an announcement tomorrow that IFD Chief James Greeson is leaving his post to take over as State Fire Marshall.   Sources say he will take the place of current fire marshal Roger Johnson who will go work on Governor Mitch Daniels re-election bid.   No word on who would be the interim chief, however Mayor Greg Ballard wants to do a nationwide search, but the law would have be changed as currently the city code says a Chief must come from within IFD.  I have never understood that rule.  The best person should be hired for the job, regardless of where they are from.

MORE INDECISION ‘08

If you thought some of Indiana’s Congressional super-delegates were in an odd position, imagine if you are Democratic candidate for Governor of 7th District Congressional candidate.  With Hillary and Barack virtually tied in the latest polls, no candidate can afford to alienate virtually half of his or her base.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

I am hearing a proposal is being introduced on the Indianapolis City-County Council to reduce the public safety tax since the state has now picked up the pre-1977 police pension.  By some estimates the tax would be cut by about 30-40 percent.  The problem with this is that although the state has picked up the tab, it is still unclear whether local lawmakers can reduce the tax, as the law only allows you to do so under certain circumstances.  I’m going through the 600+ page HB 1001 which would spell all this out, if it exists.  If you come across it before I do, please send me the citation.

AWARDS AWARDS

I attended the Associated Press awards dinner last night for Indiana News Broadcasters.  After being there, I can tell you that there a lot of people in this state who work really hard to bring you news and information concerning your community.  They all deserve a round of applause for their efforts.

here we go again or politics as usual. Word is Council Person Vern B is proposing the change since the republicans made such a stink about it in the first place.. NOw he wants to watch them wiggle trying to explain why it is still needed since the debt is gone

  • Jay

Living in Indy just the last few years our taxes have gone up up up. A second extra sales tax for the new Colts stadium, an extra percent statewide on sales taxes, this income tax Abdul mentions. We’re still short $10 million a year on the stadium, thanks to bad projections, so this repeal will never happen.

All this after Mitch creates the nation’s first Sovereign Wealth Fund by leasing out the Toll Road so a bunch of rich people can get depreciation deductions where none existed (or should exist). That money – which under the constitution Mitch swore to defend should be placed into the General Fund – is probably earning zip interest now.

We’ve gone from being a low tax state to being a high tax state (based on percent of total income we’re #11). No good will come of this.

  • MissouriDemocrat

They used to call the Democrats Tax and Spend, I think its just a politicians natural DNA. If its a tax dollar, they want to spend it.

  • Concerned Taxpayer & Citizen

I hope the governor is ready to make milti-thousand dollar payments to settle lawsuits caused by Greeson’s activities.

I think Greeson already proved to Indy taxpayers what kind of a person he is.

  • GOP Pine rider

city financial folk say HB 1001 requires the city to reduce its collection of property taxes by the same amount as the assumed pension liability. Thus, the state assumption is a benefit to the taxpayer and a wash for the city. Can anyone confirm this?

  • anonymous

I applaud the IBJ – I hope they won something! They actually INVESTIGATE and REPORT.

  • Greg

MD. You are spot on with politicians and money. Maybe over time, once the people have had enough, things can change.

  • John1

Vern B. should be fired from IFD. he is an idiot and a ghost employee. The sissy fire chief wouldn’t do anything to him because of his political position. I can’t wait until the mayor takes politics out of IFD and makes union officials and others turn in their take home cars and report to work. The chief has allowed 2 union officials to not have a job assignment for many years and not report to any assignment. Vern B. just recently was assigned a position. Corruption runs rampant on IFD and the chief always looks the other way because Vern and the union tell him to.

  • John1

I feel sorry for the State of Indiana with this clown as fire marshal and all you nice looking secretary’s watch out. Pretty boy is on the prowl.

  • anonymous

To Greeson I say, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out”. Ba-bye!

  • Disgusted

All I’ve read is negative comments about Chief Greeson’s character. These are all solely based on heresay, not personal knowledge. I know him personally and am disgusted to read what is written about him. He is one of the kindest, most caring individuals you could ever hope to meet. Why don’t you all remember what you learned in kindergarten, sinse you insist on acting so juvenille….if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!!

  • Muckraker

If any politician gave Greeson a leadership appointment, it would be a political nightmare! Greeson not only allowed Ghost Employment of Monroe Gray, but also was the reason the city had to settle a 6-figure law suit against a female for a sex discrimination suit. He was also the fire chief who (was reported to have) called a citizen a “bull dyke” at a city-council meeting while in full fire chief uniform!

Greeson looks like a hippie, & acts like he is immune from accountability.

  • Disgusted

Muckraker-If you really knew your “facts”, you’d see he wasn’t the reason for the lawsuit! The chief takes accountability for the entire department. He wasn’t the one named in the harassment. The rest of your rantings are all heresay, only proving the point that you’re making general accusations of things you don’t have firsthand knowledge of! So that comes down to your hippie remark…his hair doesn’t even come down to his shoulders! When I think of my kids dressing up for Halloween, his is not the image I would strive for! Again…juvenille remarks.

  • Concerned Taxpayer & Citizen

Man, “Disgusted” must owe Greeson a lot to be so defensive of him. I guess the truth doesn’t mean anything to “Disgusted” as long as covering for the chief protects his job.

  • john1

    Disgusted,
I have been a firefighter for 28 years. Greeson is a snake and answers to Monroe,Vern B and the corrupt union. the mayor is going to take corruption and politics out of IFD. Getting Greeson out of there is the first step.
I would assume disgusted is someone who has slept with Greeson.

  • Disgusted

Assumptions seem to be the trend here…and like those, again, you’re incorrect.

  • StatlerNWaldorf

Hmmmmm…..I wonder if “disgusted” works out of a firehouse or is just a union thug….

  • Muckraker

Well, well, “Disgusted” has requested a response & respond is what fellow bloggers have done!

    1. Greeson was the reason the city had to settle the sex discrimination law suit without proceeding to trial. With a highly publicized affidavit being sworn stating that the Fire Chief calls women “Bull Dykes”, what else could be done, but minimize the damages? -Can any attorney say you do not discriminate after testimony of Greeson’s action at a city council meeting in full uniform were heard by a jury?

    2. Greeson has a poor appearance, much like a hippie, and his hair is not in compliance with IFD regs.

    3. “Disgusted” calls the Monroe Gray Ghose Employment issue “heresay”….pleeeezzze! Monroe Gray had no meaningful responsibilities assigned to him, had a city car, and was seen multiple times on TV when democrats accused of crimes were in court! When his time card & job description were brought to light, his job description stated he had to make regular reports to the Fire Chief….Greeson (after legal advice) said “the reports were oral.” Look at the definition of felony Ghost Employment and I say it fits. Greeson was the Chief and allowed it.

-I have just put the FACTS forward, “Disgusted”. No heresay in there, just facts that are proven. Now, I have a question: is “Disgusted” actually Greeson making the post?

  • Concerned Citizen

What I don’t get is why Mitch is bringing Greeson to the State Fire Marshal’s office. Greeson was the chief under the now-ousted Dem mayor, so why would Daniels want that in his administration?

    Anyone?

  • john1

3 people interviewed for the state fire marshals job. Greeson was the least qualified. I would say Greeson kissed some politicians a$$es.
Another possibility is the firefighters union cut a deal with the state to hire Greeson before he took the union down when he crashsd.

  • john1

    Disgusted.
I personally heard Greeson call the lady who won the 350,000.00 law suit a fuc**ng cu*t. Greeson is a snake.
Every thing you say is hearsay. I worked for the bastard. I know.

  • john1

    Disgusted,
IFD has a general order on grooming standards. Greeson doesn’t enforce them because the pretty boy chief doesn’t comply.
