MORNING MUSINGS

There are a few things to report to you this morning.

A lawsuit has been filed by inmates at the Marion County Jail II over it’s conditions.  They say they didn’t get proper medical care, safety conditions at the jail  and the grievance procedure.  I’m willing to bet that this is just the tip of the iceberg.  I have heard plenty of stories like this.  Last year a man reportedly did not get his heart attack medicine and one death at the jail in January, my sources tell me, was a  suicide.  This is only going to get worse, trust me.

If Indianapolis is going to do something about the downtown panhandler problem, the sooner the better.  I visited with a number of merchants yesterday and each had a story about panhandlers accosting their customers and even walking into their establishments and asking patrons for money; some while trying to eat.  They are out of control.

Keep an eye out for news concerning State Representative and Congressional candidate Carolene Mays.  The word on the street there is some bad press coming that could put a  major roadblock in her campaign.  Speaking of Congress, Dr. Woody Meyers has unveiled a new blog.

If you want to fill the City-County Council vacancy left by Andre Carson’s election to Congress, you have until Monday to file.  I’m waiting to see if former Peterson Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell puts his name in the hat.

My colleague, Norm Cox, has some questions about Jill Long Thompson’s plan to suspend the gas tax after it hits $2.75 a gallon.

Expect something a little extra when you go vote in the May primary.  Marion County Clerk Beth White says exit pollsters will be stationed outside some polling places taking information who you voted for and why.  White says will be credentialed and voters don’t have to respond if they don’t want to.

And my condolences to the family of John Okeson.  The former Clerk of the Supreme Court and aide to Governor Mitch Daniels died this week.  John was a really good guy and a wealth of knowledge on Indiana government and politics.  I enjoyed talking to him and learned a lot from him.  He will be missed.

Of the many unending lawsuits filed across the nation from inmates in corrections, many are frivolous, but should not make the justified ones look bad. Negligence, mean spirited guards, abusive conduct, and ‘that’s the system’ status quo attitude compounds the problem, which reflects more about the keepers outside the bars looking worse than the incarcerated. Who has done a check on the camera placements and videos? Do we need someone undercover? Do we need testimony broadcasted? With various reports of misconduct coupled with unlawful overcrowding, and a silence code that merits retribution if a guard snitches the truth, we’re talking about a chronic problem no one wishes to face and carries an attitude that those jailed are getting their just desserts. The system has languished behind this with ‘you can’t handle the truth’ mentality and is incompetent at self policing. Best of luck to anyone who can correct the correctional.

  • Crouch

It was not clear from your posting if Beth White (i.e. the tax payer) was paying for the exit polls and if so… why?

  • Abdul Hakim-Shabazz

It is a private company hired by the television networks and news services.

  • http://www.myers2008.org Zach Myers

Thanks for noticing the blog Abdul, but for the record it’s spelled “Myers”. Check out the new radio ad while you’re over there.

  • Muckraker

When Dr. Myers threw his hat into the race for congress, I thought that for the first time in many years the Democrats will have an intelligent candidate running for congress….then I saw the ad and was proven wrong.

Myers comments about the war in Iraq show that he is ignorant about foreign issues and military conflict. Furthermore, his separtist lingo, calling it “Bush’s war…” is reprehensible. The brave members of the U. S. military are serving THE COUNTRY.

Myers obviously should not be elected to congress if he is so ignorant of foreign affairs that he does not understand why we cannot just pull out. The Dems really have not shown any good candidates for congress.

  • http://the-russ.blogspot.com Russ

Would you trust a doctor who looks so unhealthy? ‘Nuff said!

  • MissouriDemocrat

Since we can’t see you Russ I wonder, are you in perfect health? A tad overweight? When did having a good appetite become a means test for holding public office? I know a ton of fat republicans in the congress, lets toss all them out too. And,we can honor our troops and still call this Mr. Bush’s war. It is Mr. Bush’s was, some Republicans called WW2 Mr. Roosevelts war even after we were attacked at Pearl Harbor, republicans have no copywrite on patriotism.

  • arnie

It now is the Bush/McCain war.

  • streetfighter

I can’t wait for the exit poll-They won’t like what I have to say—–

  • Greg

I know that this comment will not be anywhere near politically correct, but; “if you are sent to jail, tough crap. Maybe fewer people would be there if it was really hard time.” I love the approach the sheriff in Arizona has taken to those in his jail. Kinda gives folks second thoughts about doing something that causes a return to his crap hole.

  • flipper

    I agree with you Greg.
Send the convicts to Arizona. the sheriff will house them for 1/2 of what it cost us here. he has plenty of desert and more than enough tents.
Before the liberals cry about cruel and unusual punishment.
If the United States Military can be housed in tents in a desert with 80 pounds of gear. So can a bunch of convicts.

  • anonymous

    1. I see Wilson was dumpster diving on C. Mays! How dare she go against the sexist Andre Carson!

    2. Beth “Incompetent” White can kiss my *ss. For once in my life I’m going to have fun and tht is what it is all about. This “crap” Beth and the D’s are so afraid of them not being able to control the outcome of a vote they will stop at nothing. If you don’t like it – change the LAW!

  • Uncommon Sense

Missouri Democrat, while I’m saddened to hear of your personal health issues…way to completely misunderstand the argument. Russ is talking about the doctor’s *health* in relation to him being a DOCTOR, not a government official. Stop thinking in terms of political party for a moment and it might become more clear. It’s not a Democrats vs. Republicans issue. It’s a “practice what you preach” issue. When was the last time you hired an obese personal trainer? Would you consider it?
    -
And, for the record, I am not passing judgment on the doctor’s health, merely pointing out the argument that obviously escaped you.
    -
As for the convicts – well, if you didn’t do something to wind up in jail, this wouldn’t have happened. This concept is called “consequences”, the lack of which is quite possibly THE major underlying issue in our society today.
    -
And as for Beth White, I now look forward to elections to see what she can screw up this time around. I’d love to have a job where I can screw up as much as she does and still keep my job. Actually, I wouldn’t. I prefer to do things well. Refer to my “consequences” concept above.

  • MissouriDemocrat

Uncommon Sense I appreciate very much your critque of my comments, but political party is very much a component of Russ’s comments regarding Dr. Woody. And, I am betting you’re a Republican as well. I like Jon Elrod, voted for him in the Special Election so I am not the normal Democrat. I believe in common sense judgments. What I see happening in politics and that is echoed by a lot of old timers who are not politicians but just plain old normal citizens is a terrible mean spirited bias on each of the sides. No I would not hire Dr. Woody as a personal trainer, but I would hire him as a Congressman and since I know nothing of the kind of profession Russ holds, I’d have to examine his worth were I to look for his professional services versus his competition. I think anyone that reads a post or reply I might make can understand that I am not biased against Republican candidates. I am biased against those that are untolerant or so dogmatic as to think they are the only ones correct in the world. I see that on both sides of the political spectrum. It is like the fight against the Fairness Doctrine, we have now got a system that allows one side to dominate the political discussion boldly stating they are the only ones correct with an idea. And, they think thats fair. I am sure I will not change your opinion, but thats my two cents. And, finally Thanks for your compassion on my health situation. The nice thing is I live in America, a nation with the finest health care available on the planet, though not always the most visionary.. I have great doctors, great medical facilities and you know, Dr. Woody was a leading national medical professional…. I’d love to have him on my medical team as well as my political team. For what its worth, Thanks again.

  • White, Female, Over 60

I’ve been active in Democrat politics for 30 years. Myers is probably the most gifted that I’ve met. I will be voting for him in the 7th.

  • Uncommon Sense

I appreciate your reply, and I agree with you in regards to the divisiveness seen today being worse than in recent memory. It saddens me, but I see why it occurs. That said, in reply to my comments, *you* are the one who injected party into this, and I have observed this in a great many of your posts. Your reply to me was consistent with this. And if you must know, I don’t believe in political parties. I believe in each person acting on their own beliefs and values. If I was to ally myself with a party, I’d likely choose Libertarian. I believe in free markets, limited government, and most of all, individual responsibility.
    -
Back to our discussion, the most interesting thing about your entire reply is that you still missed Russ’ point, and mine. Re-read my reply, please. I never said anything about hiring Dr. Myers as a personal trainer. I asked if you would hire an obese personal trainer. Remember, reading (comprehension) is fundamental.
    -
As for the “Fairness Doctrine”, don’t get me started. First off, it would never survive a modern legal challenge. Secondly, the market is handling things just fine. Talk radio shows favoring the conservative side are flourishing while Air America flounders, and among the tv networks and newspapers, there tends to be a liberal slant on the whole. It seems to be in a fine balance, and most importantly, everyone has a choice. I would have to consider that fair.

  • MissouriDemocrat

Uncommon Sense I will re-read all that dialogue sometime this weekend and then appropriately comment on it. As for the fairness doctrine, well like any other act of government yes it was seriously flawed. While maybe unlike you I am not an attorney and can not attest to its legalities, I am a Political Scientist by education and certainly was educated in Constitutional Law, etc. While my screen name says Missouri Democrat I too look at each candidate. I come from an area of Missouri that was heavilty Democratic, but today is just as heavily Republican. In another time of my life I was active and participatory in the echilons of the Missouri Democratic Party. I often said to them we needed as Democrats to admit to our complicity in this thing we call government and how we had made many mistakes. They didn’t agree and hence since that time the Missouri Republican Party has taken the lead and the elections on many more occasions than during those days. And, those in power in the Missouri party today still do not see the light. I did some paid and unpaid work for Carter Mondale in 1979 and 1980 and voted for Ronald Reagan. I voted for the first Bush.

Unfortunate for the country what I see has happened is a lopsided political spectrum in the media/news-talk radio and news presentation areas. Men like Limbaugh (being from Cape Girardeau and knowing the Limbaugh family I recall a Rush that was the blacksheep not the savior of that family), Hannity, et.al. push their viewpoints and in some instances I think their listeners find them humorous, but in others their listeners and followers actually do get out and expound on their values as if they are the only ones that know what America is all about.

I heard Greg Garrison this morning demean a History Professors book on American History as misleading and told the audience this man hates America. How would Greg know what the emotions this man has for our country. He obviously didn’t agree with the material content of the book yet admitted he had not read the book. How can you do that?

I digress, healthy dialogue on the nations problems are good. I see free markets as important, I see smaller government as good, I see less taxes as good, I see a strong national defense as good, but I think we are obligated to assist our seniors who worked long and hard building a family and life when they find themselves financialy strapped and in jeopardy of losing their homes to high property taxes. I think is irrational to spend 18 million on a coach for a basketball team, I think it stupid to build a stadium for a billion bucks when we have potholes and a city infrastructure thats eroding, we live in turbulent times both at home and abroad and while we all have an opinion, the man in the seat of government has the responsibility to guide the nation forward, not backward. I like Mr. McCain, his sacrifice for the nation as a POW but first as a Naval Officer is admirable. Unlike Rush who criticized every element of this mans life, I find him very forward thinking. Rush never spent a day in uniform but is an expert at using the military. VP Cheney the same, and for all other purposes so is the same of the President.

Protecting us in a turbulent era is the highest priority. Home grown terrorist are ever present. I just thank the Lord that we are still free, able to live a better life, etc. Isn’t it wonderful?

  • Taxpayer 834512

I believe most participating in this blog agree upon some fundamentals: freedom of speech and national defense among others. Unfortunately, (devil being in the details), there are real or percieved excesses or lackings in implementation of these principals: Rush Limbaugh, Air America, entry into Iraq, or lack of a pre-911 pusuit of Bin Laden as examples. I believe our present guide should be not be so much political ideology, as non-partisan economic reality. The United States has 5-10 years at current spending levels, per recently resigned Comptroller-General, David Walker (who served adminstrations of both parties). Do we wish to explain to our children how a dollar came to be worth a dime?

  • MissouriDemocrat

Evidently some people have no problem at all with trying to explain that nasty fact some day to their children. I hope that the explaining doesn’t come in some little camp where we are all living in tents.

  • Rumors or Facts

    Abdul,

It’s disappointing to see rumors are being reported about candidates. In my opinion, pundits should go to sources, find the facts and then report those facts.

Personally, I don’t see any value in reporting rumors. Please, let me know your prospective.

    Thanks!

  • Rumors or Facts

    WTHR Reports:

“In a filing with the Federal Election Commission, Democratic candidate for the 7th District Dr. Woody Myers has reported a gift of $550,000 of his own money to his campaign, triggering the Millionaire’s Amendment.

If a candidate donates more than $350,000 of his own money to his own campaign, opponents may be allowed to accept more than the $2,300 limit now on contributions to their campaigns.”

“White, Female, Over 60″, When you said Woody was “the most gifted” I wasn’t sure what you meant until I saw this report.

Woody, Can you say, “I’m want to buy this Congressional race”?

  • Flynn

Greg and Flipper, you may not realize it, but most of the people housed at Jail #2 are awaiting trial…they haven’t been convicted yet. They’re in jail because they can’t afford bail. Believe it or not there are innocent people in jail, especially given this Prosecutor’s penchance for sloppy investigation before charging people. Nonetheless, do you really think it’s okay for people not to get their medication while they’re in jail or to be given the wrong jail? I’m a conservative Republican and I don’t see anything right about that.

Abdul is correct. I can tell you as someone who works in the Marion County criminal justice system, the allegations regarding Jail #2 are truly the “tip of the iceberg.”

  • Hippie Joe

The jail is as rotten as the African -American leader who runs it as his own little kingdom.

The jail erases your medical records when you leave. It is a filthy jail, particularly the main site where in some cell-blocks 35 unconvicted prisoners share one shower. Staph infection is rampant in this hell-hole.
I’d like to put Warden Anderson in his own jail for three months to give him a dose of his own corrupt treatment of people.

It’s no wonder many poor black men leave this filthy jail with revenge and hatred on their minds. **** you Anderson!

  • Muckraker

Hippie Joe: “Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.” It is not supposed to be a Hilton, it is jail!

  • 40 years after MLK

Sheriff Anderson gave the prisoners food contract to the now bankrupt Payton Wells the car dealer. Go figure. I wonder who is REALLY feeding the prisoners and what they are eating.
