ETERNAL VIGILANCE

The Governor and legislative leaders will hold a joint news conference this afternoon over property tax reform.  The Governor will sign HB 1001.    The bill does a lot but it does not directly affect the assessment process, except to the extent it eliminates township assessors in townships with less than 15,000 parcels and calls for a referendum for the rest and requires all have the highest level of certification.

This is important because I’ve gotten a lot of e-mail from people worried that while the plan may cut and cap their property taxes, it doesn’t do anything to prevent the government from raising your taxes by artificially inflating your assessments and get around the caps.

This is where you come in.  You as the homeowner are the first line of defense.  When you get your property tax bill you should check your assessment and compare it to the sales of comparable properties in your neighborhood.  If something smells rotten in the state of Denmark you should appeal.  If enough people do this you can affect some real change.

Everyone has a part to play in keeping property taxes down, make sure you do yours.

I spent some time aqt the Washington Twp. Assessors office today and let me tell you the process(assessment) is really a mess. And it is not the people it is the seudo system. How can anyone "guess" at the value of a property. Especially if there is a large difference in construction dates. Assessments are at the heart of a failed property tax system. Property taxes MUST be repealed.

Dave....Mary Milz is the wife of Dennis Ryerson of the Indianapolis Star. That report was most likely slanted as Channel 13 is in bed with the Star and they are most liberal.

Really....I believe Mitch was the Office of Management and Budget Director from 2001 to 2003. This is now 2008. How does the condition of the country now fall back on Mitch?

Did anyone bother to read the bill?

Seems odd that Mayor Ballard mentions Mitchpoleon’s plan being the first step to repeal of property taxes one day and, gets put in his place, by having his allowance taken away the next day. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but, I can recognise one, when I see it.

We've also been informed as to why the 07 pay 08 bills will be delayed until February 09...That is when the great analog to digital television takes place. All of the slack-jawed, mouth breathing, knuckle draggers will be flinging poo about that. The confusion will keep the ignorant down, while more tactical police/military frequencies will be available to quell any, possible uprisings...

In the mean time, many of the overworked and, unobservant, will believe that the "Gotcha" bill is the end of hostilities. And, that the cold of February will keep many away from the state house-- Insidious!

    How about this:
    .
Instead of appealing a government attempt to scam and rob us, how about we show up en masse with pitchforks down at the capital building and refuse to pay a dime until a reasonable, rational, and palatable plan is put forward.
    .
    Its our money.
    Its our property.
    Its our government.
    .
What's needed is a website where Indiana residents can post their property tax bills/assessments for all to see, including the tax increase. Melyssa should look into that as part of her fair taxation effort.
  • Really
Is Mitch Daniels the same guy who was in charge of our Bush national budget/spending? He did a heck of a job of that. After only 2 years on the post, we are trillions of dollars in the hole. Way to go Not My Man Mitch.

Please accept my apologies for hyper-posting, but questions occurred to me as I read the most recent topic about following "the rules." Exactly what "rules" or standard is being followed to calculate property tax bills? Is this now, the market value assessment system (I submit a contradiction in terms and therefore does not exist) that a court ordered the state to follow? Is Indiana's property tax assessment system, currently "legal?"

Here's an update to the electioneered timing of this year's tax bills (read the hieroglyphics between the lines), a story done yesterday by CH13's Mary Milz. Check it out & see if you still think "relief" is on the way...

Assessments are done by a perversely interested party (the state) who has only a negative impact and makes no positive contribution to value, which is transactionally determined by buyers & sellers- no one else. The market value system is buyers and sellers and does not include assessors or the state.

Folks in the repeal movement have REPEATEDLY expressed concern about the inherent, problem by design, that is the assessment system. Caps are yet another gimmick and continue to misplace the burden of "proof" on CITIZENS to hyper-manage an illegitimate, abusive system; in hopes they'll get "administrative remedy" (whatever that is, and in whatever eternity it's available, set aside 4+ years & try the "appeal" process) when it does as it's designed to do- unconstitutional taking.

I searched my assessed value and it amazingly shows up as exactly what we financed when we bought the house.
  • StatlerNWaldorf
That could be because of the issues with the 2007 payable 2008 taxes. Try searching 2006 which are payable 2007.

Well one can TRY . . I Did my house in Pike

Marion County Assessor data for&nbsp2007&nbsphas not yet been submitted to the state

    Better luck next time.
