IT’S ELROD V. CARSON

By a healthy 66-percent vote total, freshman Republican State Representative Jon Elrod won his party’s nomination tonight to run for Congress in the March 11 special election to replace the late Julia Carson. Elrod will face Carson’s grandson, City-County Councilmember Andre Carson. Elrod beat three other challengers including Tom Rose, a part-time talk show host and youth advocate Gabrielle Campo.

Elrod says he will run on a platform of fiscal reform and constituent services. He says he wants to eliminate wasteful spending and make sure Hoosiers get a good return on the tax dollars they send to Washington.

In his campaign literature, Elrod cited a poll conducted by Democratic State Representative Carolene Mays showing him only three points behind Carson (41-38-21) in a race for the 7th Congressional District. Elrod says he is a proven candidate who can win in Democratic areas. He beat incumbent Democrat Ed Mahern by eight votes in 2006.

Elrod also says he has a local and national fundraiser which he says are crucial in a race he calls a sprint because of the short campaign period.

Elrod also won his party’s slating endorsement over the other candidates.

Lovely. Same crap, different politician. Elrod and Carson are at best political novices. More appropiate, hacks. If either wins, it will be the same old same like Julia was producing. Nothing.

I completely agree Joe. However, we can first start civil discourse by ignoring the conservative talk show hosts such as Rush, Greg and Tom Rose who think if you do not agree with them then you are Marxist/Leninist followers, unpatriotic, etc. Andre may be a perfectly fine fellow, but his is not Grandma. Bush has I am sure the best intentions, but his if Haliburton were on Clintn's watch you'd hear an outcry. We need serious forward thinking people of both parties. I hate labels.

Dynasties, dynasties, dynasties. Seems as though modern American politicians have become more concerned with having their names (or in Carson's case, her "seed") continue at the forefront of the machination that is politics. When Jacobs espoused the idea of an African-American dynasty, what he meant was a Carson dynasty.

It is unfortunate that today's politician is more in tune with his/her own interests and those of their friends than in what the people need and want. The ego and arrogance of these politicians will be rewarded, in time. All too often have we seen the mighty fall from great heights, to be dashed on rocks of their own building.

Go ahead America, allow the Kennedys, Bushes, Clintons, Carsons and such to continue to build their own fiefdoms and political kingdoms. When your personal freedoms have eroded to the point where you have to present papers to anyone and everyone just to travel to the store, all in the name of "security"; when you have no money to spend once you get to the store because the government has confiscated it all in taxes, perhaps then you will look back and ask yourself, "Where has my country gone?"

We are heading down a road that the Founders would have trembled at. If you vote against André you will be labeled "racist" and "religious bigot"; vote against Hillary and be called a misogynist; vote for secure borders - jingoistic. Every group has a slur for those that do not line up lock step with their own point of vanity.

We are to the point where civil discourse has given way to screeching accusations. I am awaiting the day when we have a repeat of the caning of Senator Charles Sumner. Reason and common sense have taken leave of our leaders on both sides of the aisle.

To borrow from Christopher Latham Sholes: Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. As the owners of this country we, as voters, need to force our politicians to temper down the rhetoric and screeching. New laws and restrictions will not do it, but rather new ideas and convictions. Refuse to vote for any candidate and their minions that resort to any form of "baiting" whether it be race, sex, religion, orientation etc. Vote only for the candidate that shows the "content of their character" and their ability.

Congrats to Jon Elrod for leading the Republicans in the right direction and ignoring the politics of hate that Tom Rose expounds on. As a former Missouri Democrat who has lived in Indianapolis 22 years I see my party as not having the movement for inclusion they like to propound on, but one of clickish nature. If you aren't part of their click they ignore you exist.

Jon has demonstrated he can get the vote the old fashioned way door to door, person to person, heart to heart. I was reared in the party of Harry Truman, molded by the early 60's and see a nation rapidly moving into chaos. Our greatest threat is ourselves. Rampant crime caused by various social ills and a stagnant economy will be our own un-doing.

I might even donate a dollar or two to Jon. Carson is not the candidate that understands the needs of this district. He would be nothing politically without his last name. Andy Jacobs statement that having a African-American political dynasty is downright stupid.

How Tom Rose thought he even had a ghost of a chance is beyond me. If any Republican in that bunch has a chance to beat Andre, it's Jon Elrod.
