THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL, WELL SORT OF!

Your property tax rebate check is in the mail, but if you’re in Marion County you won’t get it until next year. The Department of Local Government and Finance has certified more than $300 million in tax rebate checks. Marion County taxpayers will get more than $51 million. Hamilton County will receive more than $14 million. Hendricks County will more than $5.6 million in rebates. Hancock County will get $2.8 million. Boone County will get slightly more than $2.4 million. Shelby County will get more than $1.4 million.

Don’t get too excited though and don’t spend it all in one place. Because Marion County is going through reassessments, the checks won’t arrive until after the new tax rates have been reconfigured. And to make matters worse, no one can figure out exactly how much the rebates will be. At best DLGF officials say you should take your 2007 tax bill, and add five to 10 percent to your homestead credit. That should give you a starting point to work with. And speaking of reassessments, I’m hearing some pretty grave news about them you’ll be lucky so much of any change in the Spring. Some people call it a reconciliation bill.

I call it a day of reckoning bill I call it a day of reckoning bill because the rebate isn’t expected to cover the amount of your tax increase. Consider yourself warned!.

    Here’s one for you…

I got my original tax bill in… what was it, June?

I expected the RATE to go up but not the assessed value of my property.

Between 2003 and now my property went from being valued at $80,000 to $120,000 and now $180,000. Considering I bought it for $76,000, that’s the surprising part.

So back in June, before the reassessment was ordered I filed an appeal of the assessment and never heard anything back.

The the reassessment occurred. I get my bill in the mail, BUT it is completely LACKING any details of what the assessor’s office has valued my property! It just shows I owe slightly less (5%-ish) than the original June bill!

It’s on me to follow-up with my original appeal, but how can the state/county/whomever send out a “reassessment” without showing what value the property in question has been assessed at?!?!

Imagine that. Just in time for the election.

Sad thing is the amount of the check won’t even cover the cost of the movers when I’m forced to sell at a huge loss.

The truely scary thing is if the reassessments were to result in significantly lower values, the tax rate will have to increase to meet the levy, or is the rate itself frozen?

Everyone in the same county should pay the same amount. We all get the same great services and have to drive on the same streets and hit the same bumps. We also have the same wonderful people in local government so I for one, think the size of your garage or living romm should not matter. To those in government, we are all just a number.

Libertarian Plan 2001… yes, it was issued in 2001, SIX years before any of this happened!

Base the rate on the square footage of the home. This number MUST be reported anytime a house is sold, so the information is readily accessible. Oh, and it would cut out Assessors altogether… now THAT alone should be worth something! ;-)

Is it regressive? Doubtful. The bigger the home, the higher the price. Typically the lower income earners are not going to be able to purchase or live in the larger homes.

When you think about it honestly, does it really cost more for the Fire Department, Police Department, or Department of Public Works to provide service to my home just because my home is assessed at a higher price/value than the home next to me? The answer is, No.

When it’s based off of square footage, taxpayers also have the CHOICE of how much they are wiling to pay in taxes. Don’t want to pay $5K a year? Don’t buy the bigger house. Pretty simple.

we haven’t received a rebate check for our property tax yet, so are we to assume that we are not eligible? and, does anyone know where i should be checking this out, because, go figure, no one can tell me anything–what a load of crap and way to go on passing the buck–i have seen a lot in the last 50 years, but this about takes the cake–
