MEET THE NEW “HIZZONER”

By a vote of 51-47%, little known candidate Greg Ballard beat an incumbent with a lot of money and a lot of organization. Not only did voter anger sweep Bart Peterson out of office, but most of his party on the City-County Council. What was a 15-14 Democratic majority now looks more like an 18-11 Republican majority. As of 10:47 p.m. tonight and 93 percent of the polls reporting, Republicans swept all but one of the at large council seats. It looks like Joanne Sanders was the surviving at-large seat.

Democrats did have some gains picking up the seat held by Scott Keller and Ike Randolph. But Republicans (with 95 percent of the polls reporting) picked up the seat held by Sherron Franklin as well as three of the at-large seats.

Mayor Bart Peterson gave a short concession speech and reminded everyone they will wake up tomorrow in the greatest city in the world.

Ballard says his first priority will be to get control of the police department from the Sheriff and with a Republican council that should be relatively easy to do. The hard part will be dealing with spending and the tax issue.

I wish them luck.

    Morale just went up 25% on IMPD. Officers just felt a large weight lifted from them. Now , we can get to work without the politics.

    seriously, though, we dems have monroe gray to thank for this crap on the council. i think anti-incumbency swept across teh board, and i just hope they feel the same way a year from now.

    Without question, this was the biggest upset in Indiana political history.
    Now comes the hard part. With great victories comes great responsibility.
    Incredibly enough, it was Democratic Mayor Barton who lost to Lugar in 1967 by 9,000 votes. During that campaign local Democratic leaders ridiculed Lugar for his lack of experience stating that Lugar, being an Eagle Scout, did not qualify him to run this city.
    Fast forward 40 years and Ballard far surpassed that historic Lugar victory.
    I loved Ballard’s statement “Money can’t buy you love and it won’t buy you an election either”.
    How true!
    This election is one that needs to be taught in a civics class. Textbook grassroots effort.

    Now comes the time for Mayor-elect Ballard to get off to a running start. From what I read this morning, I am encouraged by his hints at a transition team.

    In the end, I think that the combination of the last minute jumping on the bandwagon by the Republican insiders -and- the Peterson campaign’s decision to roll with negative advertising put Ballard over the top.

    This election was Mayor Peterson’s to lose, and he did it.

    It would seem that money, connections, a well-oiled election team, the support of his party and an 8 year running start would have given Peterson all the advantage he needed.

    Peterson erred, I think, in going negative when he saw his 14 point lead slipping away. Waving off complaints about property taxes with an offhand “that has nothing to do with the Mayor’s office” didn’t satisfy and showed that he was unable to connect with that level of dissatisfaction among the electorate.

    Couple all of this with a Dem-led CCC that’s been in the news–and not for uplifting reasons–and his loss seemed fated. As one poster said “It was his race to lose.” And lose, he did.

    Great job Indianapolis!! We finally got fed up enough to do what we should have done four years ago. I look forward to Mayor-elect Ballard taking office. I look forward to the end of uncontrolled spending, dismissive attitudes, “pet projects” being shoved down our throats and the funding for these projects being stolen from our pockets.

    Now if we can get Dr. White to get IPS spending under control we may actually have a chance at positive change in this city.

    Grrr, firefox at my post. Let’s try this again.

    I’m stunned. I figured there would be a shift on the CCC to a (R) majority and that Peterson would win by a slim majority. But nope, I was wrong.

    The next four years will be very interesting.

    Monroe Gray, the most corrupt of the corrupt (from what we can gather) still managed to win. With the (R)’s holding a 72% majority on the CCC I wonder what his fate will be.

    After moving control of the police to the mayor’s office and away from the Sheriff I wonder what else will go on. Probably lots of budget cuts, as that is what was promised, to get spending under control.

    A few things I see as probable…

  • Mayor’s Neighborhood Liaisons; letting community groups and citizens fend for themselves in dealing with zoning, DPW, compliance, etc.
  • The MAC, for the same reasons as above.

    … Not sure what else there is.

    One of the most important things Mayor-elect Ballard needs to write down is to not become the same as those who came before.

    His predecessors lost that lesson during Mayor Peterson’s second term.

    Give credit where credit is due. The Republicans had a diverse ticket and the vote totals show it.
    African Americans on the ticket help to boost the totals for the Party. Atty. Barbara Malone and Kent smith was certianly an asset. The Party needs to recruit more minorities to run in future elections.

    I am so relieved that our cops will be respected. The credit for this really belongs to their anonymous activism via the Indy Undercover blog. Without them, the citizens would not have known how bad it really is.

    And Abdul, it was awesome doing biz with you. Thanks for great deals! We always knew what to do because of you and your show and you gave the people a lot of support and gave Ballard a lot of air time.

    It is so gratifying to see our whole city pitch in and get done what needed to be done! Now, the People are in charge as it should be.

    Never never under estimate the power of a bunch of pissed off police officers, their family and friends and friends of friends!

    Ex-mayor, all you had to do was treat your officers with a little respect and meet them half way. In hindsight, I’m so please you didn’t, you fell on your own sword. In the end, the voters voted for the Marine not the machine!
