TALES FROM THE TOWNSHIPS

I’m hearing some strange things are going on out in the townships these days. My sources tell me Wayne Township Trustee David Baird wants an $8,000 raise. I don’t what planet he’s on but apparently it’s not one where people pay taxes otherwise he wouldn’t try to pull a stunt like that. It’s bad enough his brother is on the payroll as his Chief of Staff.

In Perry Township someone is handing out parking permits to allow their out of state friends (from New Jersey) to park downtown (near the RCA Dome) without any problems. For the life of me I just can’t understand why the Perry Township constable’s office would give out a parking permit to an out of state vehicle to park in downtown Indianapolis this week? (Insert sarcasm here) By the way, I have pictures if you want to see them.

And returning to Speedway, the town council fired the manager John McCurtain with three months left to go on his contract. According to the Speedway Navigator, a new publication in town, McCurtain was let go for “budgetary reasons.” I don’t see how you can fire someone under contract and not pay him if the issue isn’t performance related. But this is also the same town that passed an ordinance so the government can enter your apartment without your permission. There’s something funny going here, folks.

It’s all in the accountability, Abdul. Township officials have historically not felt any pressure to be accountable to their electorate.

That’s why you get “Family Affair” in a Trustee’s office, parking permits to friends, opaque raises. They’re entitled, ask one sometime.

  • A Taxpayer

Perry is the same place the constable drives a Mercedes and one of his deputies drives a Chrysler 3000 WITH MUNICIPAL PLATES!!

  • Speedweigh

Word on the street is that McCurtain was let go because he “knew too much” from brokering back room deals throughout the redevelopment process and now that the project is moving forward he was cut loose to erase the trail. He isn’t talking. Reagardless, you are correct Abdul. There IS funny stuff going on.

Someone should look into the sweetheart deal the interim Perry Township superintendent is getting! A one year contract worth over $500,000!

parking permits are a way of life

the private company that writes parking tickets downtown as a condition of their contract have been ordered not to write tickets on cars with these permits. police officers also take no action on cars with these displayed..

The Wayne Township board meeting will be tomorrow (Thursday 9/6)at 6pm at the Wayne Township Fire Department HQ building (700 N. High School Rd.) They will be voting on the budget. We need as many people there to make a show to not allow this misuse of taxpayer money to take place. An $8000 raise is RIDICULOUS! Not to mention, he is wanting to raise the Poor Relief budget by $11 million and give every other worker there a 4% raise. Please show up at this important meeting and help keep spending DOWN!!!

Why is the Perry Township Constable even authorized to issue parking permits for downtown? What legitimate purpose could that serve?

The best thing and most needed is the ELIMINATION of township government. There is simply no need. We would save billions of dollars by eliminating township government in Indiana.

  • the_weasel

It appears that Ethics is something not studied or any concern in our townships.

Abdul, can we please see the pictures?

Maybe I should take some of the Mercedes and the Chrysler in Perry Twp and see they make the papers.

Perry is also the place where they have more constable badges than anyone. They work for several different businesses as well as what ever their duties include. I saw one in uniform that had I not noticed would have passed for a MCSD Deputy.

Spend and tax politicains. Getting elected to public office these days is the best job in town. A steady paycheck, helath and life benifits, a pension, all at the taxpayers expense. No layoffs.

Most of them would be unemployed in the private sector and would starve to death. They don’t know how to govern. The prestige and access to power is the name of their game.

  • varangianguard

Roy Houchins wouldn’t be related to Gayle Houchins, would he?

  • Parking Passes

Parking passes: the dirty little secret perk handed out for generations.

The sheriff or IMPD ultimately is responsible for them–if you’ll look closely at them, that’s the sheriff’s badge printed on most of them.

The sheriff hands them out via multiple outlets, including constables, most of whom are deputized as special deputy sheriffs.

All are to be used for official business only. But many, many politicos have them, and use them to park anywhere they damned well please.

    Like:

*multiple members of “Concerned Clergy.” I have witnessed one of them, Rev. Fitzhugh Lyons, park downtown outside Nordstrom, go inside, return later with packages, and leave, often with friends. He’s fat enough that he could probably finagle a handicapped permit.

*all members of the CC Council, and often, all their personal vehicles, including children.

    *many, many lobbyists.

*The chairman of the Airport Board.

    *Owner of a motorcycle dealership.

*All trustees, including Carl Drummer, who is also a deputy constable, and who has flashed his badge or permit more than once when stopped for speeding.

*Many, many former Lawarence township officials. And their children, wives and girlfriends.

The list goes on and on.

And here’s where it could get interesting: if enough light is shed on this, the Brown-Gray-Conley crew at the CCC will squeel, because they love them some perks.

Given the (ignored) rules for the parking permits, if I were to use one for shopping downtown, and didn’t feed a meter as I should’ve, isn’t that depriving the city of funds with a clear, purposeful intent? Isn’t that official misconduct, legally?

    Just askin.

I’m waiting to see how Amos Brown can spin this as a racist attack on black elected officials exclusively.

    He will. Mark my words.

  • Anon

Actually no they are not special deputies. They are their own dept the deputy constables are apointed to when the Constable is elected. The Sheriff has no oversite on them. SOme may be specials to work part time

  • RP

Hey Abdul, you never got those pics sent out!

  • nother taxpayer

word is perry twp is broke and cant float a loan to continue operations in the fire service and layoffs are imminent

  • Gary

Boy Indianapolis is a corrupt city!!

  • teutonicborn

Constables are law enforcement officers under title-33 of the Indiana code. It’s not constables who are crooked per se anymore than any other agency. If you want to see unethical, and crooked behaviour, go look at how the current sheriff runs the MCSD and then IMPD. Roy Houchins is being investigated for all those badges having been issued. He claims a former deputy (now convicted) was the culprit. The FBI will get to the bottom of that (as they should). One bad constable does not make the others bad. You want corruption stopped? Then start with Julia Carson, Frank Anderson, or Bart Peterson. Get your facts straight. Roy Houchins may have messed up. If so he needs to pay the penalty for it. But go after these other damn clowns and quit acting like they do nothing wrong.

  • pissed

You are a dumbass. If you would care to do some research you would find out that the mercedes you are referring to is a 95' and worth only $5000 dollars at best. Hardly what you make it out to be. Ferthermore Roy Houchins may have made some bad judgement calls but was one hell of a man and had contributed more to this world than all of you idiots combined.

  • pissed

What do you know someone with a shred of common sense.

  • pissed

    No.
