What Do The Polls Mean?

Already the spin is coming on the poll recently released that says a majority of voters think Marion County is on the wrong track and want someone other than Bart Peterson as Mayor.

Let’s establish a couple things. A poll is a snapshot of the mood of the voters. Second, the poll done on Peterson was done by Republicans but it was the same company that predicted victories for Mitch Daniels, Carl Brizzi and Todd Rokita. And even as my counterpart and friendly rival Amos Brown pointed out, the poll sampled a representative number of African-Americans who have always been strong supporters of the Mayor.

With that said, say what you will about the poll, but there is clearly a lot of dissent in the County right now. Whether it is taxes, crime or other quality of life issues. Property taxes skyrocketed and the “relief” taxpayers were supposed to get will only be a fraction of what they were hoping for. The Uniform Crime Statistics show robberies and aggravated assaults on the rise. And we solved our jail overcrowding problem, in part, by making it easier for criminals to walk. The Council is mired in controversy and ethical clouds under the leadership of Monroe Gray.

I don’t know about you, but with this kind of climate, are you surprised the Mayor’s poll numbers are what they are? And here’s something else to ponder, if these many people are mad at the Mayor, will $3 million worth of TV commericials really do anything to change that? If you know something different, please tell me because unless something major happens, I don’t see this shaping up any other way but bad for the party in power.

After decades of complaining about their predecessors, what does the Marion County Democratic party do? Jump right in the sty and sigh contentedly as they wallow in the same materials, all the while claiming that it smells fine on them.

I listened to your friendly rival Amos, today, Abdul. He is disturbed by this poll because it does not bode well for his party. However, nothing could have illustrated how out of touch some of the Democrat council caucus is as the appearance of William “Duke” Oliver.

I wont go into the man’s diction, although it reallly needs improving, but his sole response to the poll and Peterson’s “leadership” was a simplistic “its never easy to do the right thing” in reference to the police pension board..that its ALL because of Republican inaction, (even though he and his party have had 8 years to correct this deficiency) and finally, and sadly, that Amos’s show was the only one in town that didnt spout propoganda. So apparently you and the rest of the local media are out of touch. Hey, if it looks, waddles, and quacks like a duck, etc (quack!)

Of course, he is running unopposed, so its easy to pontificate. It would be nice for him and his constituency if he dealt in what I call “reality”. It got so bad that Amos was trying to shut him up because he was embarrassing himself and his party’s leadership. Oh well. To all the contested races.. Remember in November!

I tuned into Amos’s show just in time to ehar his rant about the poll. He claims to know a great deal about research and polling, base don his job title for the corporation which owns hi station.

But, get this: as long as the poll sample had close to the city-wide black population PO26.5% actual, 23% poll sample), he was fine.

Never mind that the poll sample group was nowhere near the numebr of Democrats, and let too many people declare themselves independents. (Independents have no one to vote for in November…they always end up choosing D or R, or, in some cases, stay home)

Mr. Oliver’s diction is a hell of a lot betetr than Mr. President’s.

One thing not mention on that show, or yours, is the drip, drip drip of almost four years of lousy council leadership. That has an effect after awhile. The mayor gets more of the blame than he deserves, ergo his numbers drop.

He feels he cannot stand up to the one-vote margin his party has. Included in that one-vote margin are about four or five compeltely worthless councilmen. And he knows it.

Now, thanks to their antics, so does the public.

    He’ll probably survive.

Where’s the dirt on Wilson? No more teasing, come on Abdul we want to know.

Kim – stay on topic please.

Abdul, no surprise on the poll numbers but the only poll that counts is the one that takes place on Election Day. I don’t know what kind of commercials Bart could run that wouldn’t make people just yell at their TV about what a liar he is, but there are the kool-aid drinkers who follow him anywhere.

The nattering nabobs of negativity are out there, for certain. The cops have been trying to tear down this mayor for years. now there are others doing the same. Bart didn’t raise taxes for 7 years, and so now everyone is mad? Let’s not forget the Republicans blocking Indy Works for years (even though admittedly this past session it was the D’s blame in part)!

The Democrats took control and we suddenly not only have corruption, but the HIGHEST TAX INCREASE in history of our city!

Democrats Tax & Spend, we all know that, but the corruption, patronage, cronyism, and…to top it off…The Democrat elected officials are NOT paying their taxes that they imposed on us: Carl Drummer, Tony Duncan, Billie Breaux, Patrice Abdullah, Rozelle Boyd…all on the tax delinquency list!

Tax and Spend…may be your motto. Corruption may be your middle name…not paying your share of taxes is your game, but the citizens of this city do NOT aqree & we will show it at the polls.

9:49 PM – SHUT UP WILSON!!!!

How utterly simplistic, 9:49, “The cops have been tearing him down for years”. I would say damnded ignorant, but you arent-neither are those cops. They’ve had Petertson’s number for years. You can tell lies, more lies, and goddamnded lies..and get away with it for a while. The same goes with the lack of respect issue, which now everyone knows isnt confined to “the cops” but to the electorate in general.
Peterson cannot hide or disguise his ineptitude anymore. It’s time for him to go-or be embarassed in November.

I was one of the people who was surveyed in this poll. I will say I was very negative on the major and his agenda. When I got off the phone I commented to my wife that I thought that the poll was actaully commisioned by the democrats. They asked numerous questions about the mayors tax cuts and I kept replying where are the savings and why are they upping my taxes! I truly love it when the mayor and the council state all of the millions of dollars they are saving us but can never provide detailed information on where the cuts where made. I remember talking to Jim Bradford when he was on the council and he said all the mayors office would provide was blank paper. Details! Details! We don’t need no stinking Details!
