COUNCIL MEMBER RESIGNS UNDER CLOUD OF CONTROVERSY

Indianapolis City-County Council Member Patrice Abduallah is resigning his council seat. I reported this week that documents filed with the Marion County Clerk showed Abduallah did not live in his district, as required by law.

On his way out the door Abduallah took a swipe at the media, the blogs and his own Democratic Party. He blamed the media and blogs for hounding him and blowing the story out of proportion. And he blamed his fellow Democrats for not standing up for him.

Blame aside, this controversy is not over as it only raises more questions. Will Abduallah have to give back any pay? What about his votes, were they legal? If not, what does that mean for all the 15-14, including the public safety tax? City officials say they have case law that says those votes are legal. I’ll be interested to see it. Speaking of 15-14, with Abduallah off the Council, the balance of power has shifted and Democrats are no longer the majority. What does this do for the budget and other proposals?

There is a news conference planned for later this morning. I’ll try to have details.

YEAH! Hat tip to Gary at Advance Indiana for his investigative work.

    Abduallah? Pitiful.

  • Pike Voter

WTG AI, Abdul and everyone who contributed to this story and outcome !

wow. the star finally did a story on this. but where is the story about the failures of the clerks office? very lame.

  • District 15 Voter

And the Democrats had the nerve to challenge the Voter ID law. The precinct poll book list the registered voters in the precinct. Candidates file from the precinct they are registered to vote in. The Warman address was not in a precinct in District 15. When Beth White notified Mr. Abdullah of the conflicting addresses, there was no follow up prior to ballots being printed for the May Primary Election. A Republican candidate would have never made it on the ballot if the addresses didn’t match.

All elected officials should be given drug and background checks just like we citizens. In addition, one has to wonder, if none of this had happened publically, if his property tax woes would have magically disappeared with the push of a button. This city needs one big audit.

Now we need to get back on the Gray and Aaron Haith bandwagon, midwest concrete llc, 300 east, trotter construction, and the printing company with that oh so sweet contract.

    Get to work!

    :)

It is my understanding that there 21 or so seperate committee hearings taking place on the city’s budget.
With Patrice gone would that not have some impact on those hearings which are held to determine how city tax dollars are spent?

There isn’t anything the Clerk’s Office could have done. A challenge has to be brought up by a citizen, and the Election Board handles it from there.

Now maybe you can start working on David King Baird, Wayne Township trustee, who hired his brother at $75,000 a year to be his Chief of Staff.

I agree, David Baird needs to go. He is proposing raising the Township budget by 11 million next year! What the hell does he need with that much money? I also heard that this is the first year the FD budget was not completed on time. Great leadership Alcorn!

Score another for The People. Thanks so much to those two courageous guys who stood up and publicly pointed out Patrice Abdullah’s residency fraud. And thanks a million to Gary Welsh at Advance Indiana for doing the research and getting the ball rolling.

Hopefully this victory will inspire more people to participate in the citizen activism work that is needed to take control of our local government and hold all of our politicians to the rule of the law.
