STATEHOUSE UPDATE: INDIANA SENATE PASSES BUDGET, GAMING, NEW TAXING POWERS

Following the lead of the Indiana House of Represenatives, the state Senate passed a new budget, property tax relief, expanded gaming and new taxing power for local governments. The Senate passed concurrent measures that passed in the house, however critics called the measures short term, involved too much government spending and were only band-aid solutions to Indiana’s long-term problems. The measures now go Governor Mitch Daniels for his signature.

    I hope I don’t understand this.
The legislature passed a bill that will allow property taxes to rise significantly and their solution is a rebate check issued by the counties back to the taxpayers?

Many of the taxpayers have mortgages and the mortgage company will pay the tax statement…large as it may have grown.

Then, the county will send Mr. & Mrs. Taxpayer a rebate check which they will hurry out to spend.

Then the mortgage company will compute the shortfall in escrow accounts. Start with the significant rise in property taxes paid now and add a similar amount to cover the next 12 months.

Now, Mr & Mrs Taxpayer will get a notice from the mortgage company that is much larger than if they had merely paid the difference in taxes and been done with it.

So, the taxpaying homeowner will be mad at the mortgage company and the legislature and county can claim that they tried to help?

    Ummm, no thanks?

It’s the same as the scam known as the IRS. They take out much more than needed out of your paycheck, then give you a refund/rebate at the end of the year.
