Score Another One For Hizzoner

Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson and Warren Township Trustee Jeff Bennet will announce today an agreement to merger Warren Township Fire with the Indianapolis Fire Department. This is the Mayor’s second fire merger victory. IFD merged with Washington Township last year. The mayor has enjoyed success on this front. Now if he can get Pike and Wayne Townships I’ll be impressed. Good luck getting Pike Township Trustee Lula Patton to give up her department. And if you want to find Wayne Township Trustee to give up his fire department go get a butterfly net.

  1. How's That, Abdul?

Uh, it’s NOT Lula’s department. It belongs to the taxpayers of Pike Township.

I know she’s got the Queen mantality, and she may think it’s hers. But it’s not. Never was.

The very fact that many think it’s “hers” is reason enough to bust up these little fiefdoms.

    She’s a paper tiger anyway.

  2. second that

    Members,

The administration of the Fire Department in conjunction with the Township Trustees Office would like to address recent news reports concerning us and fire department consolidation. The Township Trustee, and the Fire Chief and his administration are not in the process of negotiating consolidation with the Indianapolis Fire Department. The Fire Chief and his command staff are however engaged in a process aimed at increasing our interoperability with surrounding agencies. In the day and age in which we live this is both good business and now mandated by Presidential Directive. This process may include the purchasing of new equipment, the development of new positions, and other changes meant to align our operations as much as possible. As most of you are aware there is legislation in the Statehouse that mandates fire department and some government consolidation in Marion County. If this legislation becomes law it is in the best interest of our fire and EMS personnel that we take those steps mentioned above in order to be pro-active. We believe that a pro-active approach to providing public safety is a requirement for success. Changes and reassignments have been, and will continue to be carried out in a fashion designed to enhance the way we respond to emergencies everyday. We are a busy and active fire department and EMS provider and our goal is to continue functioning as one of the best.
In closing, any changes to the Townships stance on Fire Department consolidation will be communicated to you as soon as possible by Trustee Baird or Chief Alcorns office. It is a busy and challenging time and we are working hard to keep our fingers on the pulse of all that is going on.

    Thank you,

    Troy L. Wymer
