We’re all keeping eye on the weather today as things could get a little hairy. In the meanwhile there are a couple issues out there worth keeping an eye on.
Indiana lawmakers may take up the cigarette tax today to pay for health care. The amount I hear is 60 cents per pack. The measure will come up in the House Ways and Means Committee.
City-County Council President Monroe Gray may face a challenger in this year’s municipal election. His challenge isn’t coming from the Republicans but the Libertarians. Libertarian Mark Rutherford is interested in running against Gray. Rutherford hasn’t made a formal decision, but thinks Gray has been a embarrassment to the District on the city’s near north side.
And speaking of elections, Marion County Republicans did not slate a candidate for Mayor this weekend. They’re waiting, in part, to see if Bart Peterson is really going to run again. We’ll know this Saturday as Marion County Democrats have their slating convention in Indianapolis.

The GOP is “waiting” to field a Mayoral candidate because they can’t beat a guy whose done a good job and remains favorably viewed by a majority of the city.
(Nearly 3 mil in the bank to start the year doesn’t hurt either).

Done a good job? Sure he’s done a good job: Done a good job at burying his head in the sand. Done a good job at not speaking out against Monroe Gray, Ron Gibson, pea shakes, etc. The GOP has done a poor job in naming a candidate, I agree. But, our mayor has continually looked the other way on some serious issues, and hopefully, the citizens of Indy will get off their duffs and do something about it.

I like the looks of this Libertarian, Mark Rutherford. He has a well written blog too. Perhaps if the Republicans cannot get their act together, it is a good opportunity for the Libertarians to run in every race.

The race for mayor will be Businessman Bob Parker vs maybe Bart Peterson? His $3 Million in the bank is on reserve for a shot at Governor Mitch Daniels in 2008 if he can survive November.

Bob Parker was the political genius who got Ron Franklin in the race for Congress. Dickerson swamped Parker’s protege.

There seems to be some logic as to why the Governor and Mayor Peterson are getting along so well. This is a possible scenario:
1) Governor Daniels will not seek re-election for a second term. Why should he? He doesn’t need the headaches and his wife is fed up with him in politics. He’ll become semi-retired in his new house in Hamilton County and life is good again.
2) Lt.Gov. Skillman get the nod to run from Mitch and takes his war chest to mount a credible campaign. She may even win with Hillary on the Dem ticket.
3) Mayor Peterson knows that Mitch will not run for a second term as they both scratch each others backs on specific legislation during this session.
4) Mayor Peterson has placed Mike O’Connor in charge of Marion County to shore up his base in run for Governor. All the old Evan Bayh pols jump on the Peterson bandwagon.
5) Flush with cash the Marion County Dems have no problem finding a replacement for Peterson. Choice of replacement will be up to Bayh and his people. Marion County GOP is broke and in disarray and can’t field candidates to even run against replacement.
6) Back to Mitch. Lugar will retire soon and Mitch gets the nod.
7) Peterson as Governor and Mitch eventually ends up as US Senator.

Lots of people are eyeing Lugars Senate seat…methinks Peterson is among them.
Speaking of which, Lugar can’t run again. He wasted his chairmanship of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and his considerable clout on those issues, when he mamby-pambied the Bush administration’s disasterous foreign policy. Now, in the minority, he’s ineffective, at best.
Smart, yeah, but ineffective.

I see some anonymous nobody is upset at my exposing deranged deadbeats. Another poisoned-pen smear from a faceless accuser. For many years the elected leadership in the African-American community has appreciated my activities and assistance. My “profile” has been researched by frustrated dumpster divers but my life has been unexciting, simple and uncontroversial. Oh well…
