When “W” Talks, Will People Listen?

The President will give his State of the Union address tonight. The pundits and newsmakers say it is important because this will be his first State of the Union with a Democratic-controlled Congress.

Although the speech is important, I don’t think many people will take it seriously or pay much attention to it. Look at the facts. He’s a lame duck. The President is at 33-percent approval rating, the lowest since Richard Nixon. More Republicans Senators are expressing opposition to troop increases in Iraq. There were 25 American troops killed over the weekend in Iraq as well as 100 civilians. And everybody and his mother want to be President.

This is not to say the Presidency is irrelevant. The Commander-in-Chief wields a lot of power and has a bully pulpit that can easily capture the attention of the American people. What I wonder though is when the President talks tonight, will anyone listen?

I predict a shift towards the left in an attempt to generate support from the opposition. He might throw out a bone to the Rockefeller/UN backed man-made global warming crowd, or renewed calls for granting status to illegal migrant workers, or a combination of the above. You can bet that he’ll call for renewed energy initiatives – I’ve heard recently that the US is pushing to expand Alberta oil sands by as much as 5 times. And more money to Africa under the cover of fighting AIDS.

And of course, we’ll be reminded that we face a continued “terror” threat, that Goldstein – oops, I mean Al Qaeda – is still out there planning attacks, and that we need to strengthen our resolve in combating this mortal menace to all of humanity. The message will come out loud and clear that we need to get behind foreign wars for the long haul.

So that’s it, in a nutshell. An unconstitutional shift to the left and government expansion on domestic issues – including insurance/health care and the environment. And status quo on the propaganda about the danger that our enemies pose and that we need to get behind an agressive foreign policy if we don’t want to die.
